I had read one article that said it would be more than a 48% improvment over the ATI 5870...

This remains to be seen..I look forward to trying it..

    Here is one article

I do love the way you word things...Maybe i can steal you away since this is going to be a big event and we can do a little doubling up on this one...You are the expert on Nvidia and i can follow your lead....

Thanks for the post. I've been wanting to read something on this for a while now. My biggest concern other than having waited an age is the potential heat issues. I think its funny to see a Fermi certified case as if this is the fix for a next gen space heater and everybody is going to jump on board or something. I am going to wait till it releases and read the reviews and if the power consumption and heat output isn't comparable then I'll jump on a 5850. The 8800gts g92 i'm still running is ready to be reassigned to an htpc.

    Miracles do happen.

    # Apologies for the confusion around our most recent GF100 update. To clarify, launch date for GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 is March 26, 2010

I don't know what to expect.

The mention of 70 degress idle while at 70% fan speed annoyed me From what I've read prior to this and even on the nvidia forums, what keeps getting touted is the tessellation performance. Beyond some Heaven benchmark, what good is it? We can't expect the current influx of console ports to leverage it.

So it'll probably be the best folding@home / CUDA card ever, but all I need though outta that is physx performance...

    Maybe I should just get a 275.

I would guess a wait and see would be best...ATI does have a leg up so to speak to work things out...

I look forward to playing with one Not really sure about it being 60% better than the 5870 but will know soon enough!!!

Nothing wrong with speculating So yea, more to the point on your question. I don't expect it smash it, but I can't imagine it not having notably better numbers in the end. The way I see it is that the 5000 series has been out long enough that it can easily drop $50+. If Nvidia is using the current price points as a starting point it will only serve towards creating a larger gap in the price/performance ratio. Coupling that with any power/heat deficiencies only makes the 5000 series more attractive. One would think that they've been in the game long enough to account for that scenario.

It could very well be as Charlie said..They need to get out there with whatever spin they can....You would think though with this crowd any problems would be hashed over and brought to everyones attention...You know they know that...Time will always tell....

Also if he is correct about it being 5000 to 8000 units they will be harder to get than the ATI offering in the start of there run...

Just something I ran across today while trying to find some 'new' info. I don't know how accurate these pre-release measurements should be considered.

Anandtech has a review on the new 4xx series. Mostly good, but not overwhelming and both cards have disabled components most likely due to batch issues.
    EVGA 780i, Q6850 (3.0), TR Ultra Extreme 120, 8gig G.Skill, EVGA 8800GTS 512, PCP&C 750w, 1x320gig Seagate 7200.10, 2x320gig Seagate 7200.10 Raid 0

    Components? Which ones?

Need a lot of juice to do it and really good cooling I am guessing but Kyle at [H], who I believe has had a falling out with Nvidia, seems awfully impressed with two GTX480's in SLi
