I Had Excellent Luck With My Sony Dru-820a. It Does All Formats Including Dvd-ram. It Uses Udma 4, And It Just Plain Flies!! Haven't Had 1 Hiccup From Any Sony Dvd Burner I've Owned. But Remember,,it Also Falls To What Your Prefrence In Brand Names Is Too.

@CYBERX1800XT - Sony doesn't produce their own burners...they are either rebadged Lite-Ons or BenQs. In the case of the Dru-820a, it's a rebadged BenQ 1670 (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=166054)

Good question frankly as it does seem to move fast in that arena. All depends on the use one makes of it I guess. On a personal note since I rarely burn, I went for price and reputation and ended up with a Nec 3520A.

Great price (<$40.00 CDN), burns CD faster then my 2 CD burners and what else can I say ...trouble free really.

I've used on Lite-on, ASUS (I'm sure they are a rebadge for something), HP, and not had any problems with them period. The only problems I've ever seen with any burner is using crappy media to burn to.

I just ordered a BenQ 1650 (model without LS) because I thought the extra $14 was not worth it since I don't care about it.

Try burning at 16x and see if your 716A will burn the discs with a uniform colour after burning. You have to look at the disc under bright light (desk lamp is enough) inorder to see the color. When I say uniform colour, when burning at any speed, has to look like as if it was burned @ 2.4x

As far as I know, 716 is one of Plextors most faulty drives. People have to take the drive apart and recalibrate the laser in order for it to work again. I've personally done so but I believe no consumer should need to perform such daunting tasks. Check the forums @ club cd freaks.

The 760A, from personal experience, burns uniform colour discs at speeds up to 12x. At 16x & 18x you start to see a very slight colour difference but the difference is very minor, at least when compared to the 716A.

Any new burners out there that top the list on the price/performance charts?

LG have made the best quality writers (and I mean that they make a very good quality DVD) for a while now (2+ years) the 4163 and 4167 being the very best (but are very thin on the ground now), and can bring out the best in quality media like Verbatim and TY, the only problem is that you cant do quality scans with their drives, this is the only area that Plextor had them beat.
Many people seem to think that because something cost more than others that it had to be better... this is often not the case. But because you can get a drive that will do quality scanning and often both for less than the price of a Plex that is the better way to go.

The Lite0n SHM-165P6S is a very good quality scanning drive and when paired with one of the above will make an unbeatable combo, the BenQ drives were quite good but only when used with disks that they have burned.

The newer H42/44N LG drives use the same sort of chipset as the 4167 but are not as good in the write area as it, but still better than most.

Some Pioneer drives are quite good (the 111 and 112), NEC used to make good drives but this stopped with the ND-3540/3550.

The main thing to remember is that you need to use a good media to start with and its not worth using a cheepo media and expecting to work well. Verbatim can be got from most places, there is a make called Infiniti that just use Verbatim (MCC) media re-branded so you can get a very good at a cheap price media with it.

Ritek make some of the worst media.

ok I wan't to get a new DVD Burner ( Gave mine to my mom ). So do I wan't to get one with 12X DVD-RAM also what do you guys thank of the LG drives. I know plextor drives are the best ( I love them ) but I don't wan't to spent $70+ on a DVD Burner ( I know I'm cheap )
