I've had a lot of cd and dvd burners and never could understand why Plextors were so much more expensive. Now I have 2, a 716a and a 716sa and I think they are worth every penny

Plextor PX-716 SATA here as well (x2) and yes, pretty quiet. But if I were buying now I would go all the way with the PX-760SA.

Yes the Plextor's are quiet.
They also sport many goodies ( SecuRec, GigaRec, PoweRec, Silent Mode, etc )

p.s. Yes, the plextors deserve every single penny
And the RMA service is great ( OCZ & Plextor RMA rule )

Correction: oops - I said I run PX716-SA, but I don't - I run PX716-A (Standard ATA IDE) - but they still rock the house performance wise. And I would recommend them - but if you have the headers available and the oprion for SATA ones, that's what I would do - just because I'm a tweaker like that.

Are the Plextor's quiet?

My external Plex drive itself is quiet however the case the drive is in has a fan with a high pitched whine. I just started to use an internal IDE HP 740 burner and I'm impressed with how quiet it is. Plus I really like Lightscribe.

PX-760A/SA isn't currently available and launch has been delayed with a dubious ETA...the "replacement" model is the PX-755A/SA (probably 760s that didn't meet 18x spec, etc.) and is only avail in limited qtys in EU and JP...

the best "bang for the buck" dvd burner widely available right now is the benq 1640 and its many rebadged variants (plex 740, sony 810, hi val, etc. etc.)...

motherboard/SATA chipset controller compatibility with SATA ODDs is often an issue so if you don't NEED the simplified cable mgmt or that extra IDE port, i'd avoid them (there's no "speed" advantages to SATA ODDs...only cable mgmt, no jumpers, free IDE channels, etc.)...

I haven't heard of "delay stuff" considering the PX-760SA.
No mail from my contact at Plextor also.

According to these internal standards of quality, Plextor decided to delay the delivery for PX-760A series on a worldwide base until further notice. The 18x writing quality of our drive in combination with the available media does not meet our internal writing quality standards.

Today, I received the letter of an apology from Plextor. A memorandum holder was enclosed as an apology. I feel sale of PX-760 will delay considerably, because of this letter.

btw, i have 4 plextor ODDs (premium, 708UF, 2x716As) and a BenQ 1640...i'm a fan of plextor (barring some gripes with their policies) and just stating facts is all
