Sorry, thread highjacking. I just have to ask a question.

Odd....I thought it used to be that Maxtor made the best. (In my experience, up to about five years ago they were really good and reliable.)

Has this changed? Has there build quality dropped? Or are their designs rather poor?

Flex, sorry you're having PC hell right now.

WD and Seagate have been very good to me.

IBM and Maxtor I have had trouble with but only once or twice in 3 years.

WD isnt that good either, they have clicking noises too. Everyone here should try Samsung! Not as used as Maxtor or WD, but a hell of alot better in quality and very very very quiet compaired too others (and Ive used just about everyone else too).

Yeah, I coulda told you to sway away from Hitachi, Ive only heard not-so-good to bad things about them for the most part.

AV you are going to have to put up some literature comparing the major drives. I have WD and Max without issues. But then we are hijacking flexkill's thread.

As you know Hitachi bought the hard drive div of IBM - including their "death star" drives. In case you have one of these maybe there is hope

Q. What is a “Qualifying Deskstar 75GXP”?

A. It is any new Deskstar75GXP hard disk drive covered by the Settlement, whether purchased by a Class Member as a stand-alone hard disk drive, or whether included as a component of a pre-assembled computer system purchased by the Class Member. The settlement relates to the following family of IBM Deskstar 75GXP HDD models: DTLA 307-015; DTLA 307-020; DTLA 307-030; DTLA 307-045; DTLA 307-060; DTLA 307-075.
Link (http://www.ibmdeskstar75gxplitigation.com/faqs.asp)

If not then I hope you can get another drive in there to get youir data off that drive before it fails completely.

and as far as saving any info off the disk....lol this is just the gaming and benching rig ...so i don't really care if i lose any info...it's just the point of this happening so soon!!!! :|

How soon? Within warranty soon or within my lifetime soon?

Glad to hear it doesn't contain anything important.

Sorry for highjacking the thread earlier.

I had a new SATA (my first SATA) Maxtor recently die with less than 20 hours of operation! This is the only Maxtor that I have had experience with that didn't work. I thought it an anomaly. But upon hearing 5-Clicks utter an admonition against using Maxtor...

Anyway I am glad to hear there is nothing important to be lost on the noisy hard drive.

I know how it is to loose data. I ounce got my drive letters mixed up when formating... I lost alot of data. Nothing I couldn't live without, some saved games, some music, a couple of writting projects, all told about 300 hours of work lost, O well....

Again sorry for highjacking and I hope you can get that hard drive RMAed soon.

Get a Seagate...most reliable in the industry, there have been studies to support this claim...Hitachi and WD are good as well. Maxtor was good at one point, then they were crap...now that they have aquired Quantum, their drives should be better. I went with the top of the line enterprise model though just to be safe ;)

Ahem, sorry. So does the click mean an eventual failure of the drive?

Thanks, now let's move onto the subject at hand :D

Was this a retail or oem drive? I ask 'cause i was reading about different warranty rules depending on which one it is. Do you still have the receipt?

In either case I would start harping on the retailler to get it swapped out pronto.

thats what it seems...as i have had this happen before...but who knows sometimes they last for years like this before they go bad...so i won't mess with it and just let them go when they die!!! they where only 50 bucks a pop....ah well , lessen learned  (that was in respone to AV's question) :)

AV i've heard positive things about Samsung....quiet...fast...so on, but my personal experience wasn't too peachy. IMHO they're just as good as any other drive...which means that Samsung and Hitachi have the same possibility of failure as the other.

a friend of mine used to work for Samsung and he got a buncha harddrives from there just before he left. his son basically bought 3 of them from him for his latest rig and a few weeks later one of them konked out or something. screwed up his windows raid setup so we had to reformat and it wasn't too much of a picnic trying to figure out which one was the bad one...esspecially because we were eager to start overclocking the thing. :D however, from other reports i've heard people complain about their experiences with Samsung's hdds too.

now i realize, this could have happened to any hdd manufacturer so i'm not bashing Samsung's hdds. but just like every other good PC manufacturer out there...no company's has flawless parts. some people just have better experiences than others...

my 2 80gb SATA Hitachi's in Raid0 are screamin away! but flexkill, you just weren't so lucky :smash: :na:

All harddrives can fail. Although most of the drives I've had fail were maxtor's this is mostly because those were the drives I ran the most/longest.

Now I just look for drives with a 3-5 year warranty.

Hitachi - 3 yr
WD - a few have 3 year, but most aren't anymore (loss of faith in own product?)
Maxtor - a few have 3 year, but most aren't anymore (loss of faith in own product?)
Samsung - 3 yr for most (I think) but I have 0 experience with them
Seagate - only 5 year warranty I know of

I figure the longer the warranty is the longer they survive statistically speaking. Go with a seagate!

Snafu

Thanks Jorrell. I do not know the details of these warranties but it might pay off to look at these closely and see if they are full warranties or a limited (pro-rated) over the life of the warranty.

I would sooner have a full warranty over 3 years than a pro-rated one over 5 years.

flexkill,

care to share exactly what model number you are experiencing problems with. I for one have been waiting for Hitachi to release their T7K250 in 160 gig format which is full Sata II compliant, and now you got me worried?

Samsung just released their full line of Sata II drive, might be worth investigating I guess...well for me anywho....
