View Full Version : Memory cooling, anyone done this?
This is a Intel P4 stock fan modded to cool my OCZ 3700 memory. Will post temp differences l8er on. Tell me wot u think.

just curious.what are the tiewraps connected to from the fan base to ???? and is this just based on top of the ram?????..........looks like it should do some coooling, but i'd bet ya gotta keep everything clear from blades when running, eh??.................(btw........like to know more on your waterchill and all, kinda looking into or not of doing).........  :D
I run a fan on the dimms when im testing, can make a huge difference.I use a Zalman fan bracket and a 120mm fan when the rig is case mounted.
These boards get hot, cooling them is well worth the effort.

Very nice! TT makes something similar, so you prolly saved yourself a bundle.
I have a Stealth 92mm blowing over my Corsair, but it's a good 3"-4" above the RAM (on a Zalman bracket fixed at the PCI slots). Dunno if it helps, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Hi Neil,
Beautiful work, but please don't post threads in more than one forum, it is very counter productive and divides those trying to follow the thread's progress.
Thanks for your understanding:wave:

Finally got my multimeter back so can check temp differences. Check this out!
Running mem test for about 45min without fan installed = 39Deg!!!! WTF?
installed fan running at 6V = 27Deg and at 12V = 22Deg. That gives a temp decrease of 17Deg C, which I think is damn good.

I looked over this thread... You did not mention that you have had ANY problems with the RAM before (maybe just forgotten to write it...). You don't have any advantage after installing the fan...
Maybe I'm just to stupid... but:  What should it be good for? 36°C is already a pretty good temperature for RAM. Even at 46° the RAM would not be too hot...
So PLEASE explain to me what advantages you have - exept the higher noise level...

After talking about the 'CONs': I think you installed the FAN really good. :) It looks professional - but be aware of cables wich may touch the blades and stop the FAN or get damaged.
The FAN pushes the air from "above" onto the ram, is that right?
Perhaps you should take some clear Tape to seal the other two RAM-Slots before they are filled with dust. You know how a CPU-heatsink looks like after a few weeks of use...

Ghostrider,
Yes sir, I did and do still have memory issues. Many people will get DDR500 from their ocz pc3700 gold. I on the other hand can only get DDR485! With a lot of help from a few people I have not been able to get any better. I asked about heat and was told it could be an issue, as with any component the hotter it gets the worse it performs, so cooling it is a logical way of aiding performance and extending life span. This is the reason for me doing the mod. Unfortunately I have seen no performance gain in terms of memory speed but have achieved much better stability during gaming with no system crashes and erratic shut downs as I had before with exactly the same set-up. I hope this justifies the mod in your mind now.
I have taken on board your comments about dirt and dust. I take my system apart about once a month and give it a good clean out with compressed air, so it is not an issue for me but is probaly worth a worry for those lazy folk out there!
Yes the fan does take it's air from above and blow down into memory
