View Full Version : What are the realworld benefits of RAID0

I am considering a RAID array but I have seen differing opinions on wheteher it is really worth it from a performance point of view to install a 2 drive array in a RAID 0 format. Can someone give me an idea of what the advantages are and in what applications?

In a general overall sense you do get faster read/writes. You can also make it so that you have a bigger drive. e.g. You have an 80 Gig drive but it's filling up fast. You don't want to deal with a second drive for a letter mapping and so forth. By getting a second 80 Gig drive you can make it so that you have a 160 Gig RAID0 drive instead of the two 80 Gig drives. Only recently, like this past Friday evening did I finally switch to RAID0 on my Canterwood, it is definitely faster (I had the slower, older Seagate SATA drive-I made it faster by coupling it up to a WD SE drive with a seriallel adapter). I normally prefer using RAID0 or RAID5 configurations.

Thanls PointReyes

I have been conversing with someone who has the same board. He maintains that RAID 0 is more finicky and he finds his stable overclocks have declined and did not see any improvements in gaming from his single drive setup. He has his Operating system on the RAID setup and important data on a single drive.

I was considering putting XPPro on a RAID setup primarily for gaming and XPHome on a single drive for office and more critical data. Does that make any sense at all?

When you say "faster" what do you mean and what applications?

By faster I mean the read/write process of the drive will be faster. You will go from 40~50Meg/sec to 65~110Meg/sec. So whatever software that relies on the disk drives will run faster-like databases. The only place where a RAID0 comes in good for gaming is for games that use the hard drive. SATA ICH5R controller is very touchy about oc'ing. However, I do get a kick of out this-a person gets a Canterwood (a $175~225 board) then does not use one of the main features of the chipset-good grief, they should stop their whining and get a different board (sorry, had a very bad night and only 2 hours of sleep :( ). Here's what is so good about the ICH5R, it does not bottleneck the PCI bus. So you can either go for the high overclocking with PCI bus bottlenecking with the drive or you can go with a slower or default speed and not have the PCI bus bottleneck. The choice is yours. :)

Is there that much of a difference between XP Pro and Home for gaming? I'm not a gamer so I don't know. Personally, I would use Pro for the more critical stuff.

Yikes pointreyes. I don't think anybody was whining. My friend kindly reported his findings and I am getting prepared to use the RAID features of the board hoping for some expert advice before I decide which way to go.

Thanks for the information. Hope you have a better night tonight.

Sorry. I'm reacting to what I heard from the past few months from so many people that are complaining about the Canterwood/Springdale without checking into the facts. :(

I hope I have no more sinus headaches like last night (or rather this morning). Headache was so back that it awoke me from a deep sleep and required me to overdose on medicine to finally get rid of the miserable thing.

No problemo. i am getting ready to get my wisdom teeth removed by surgery so I relate.

Besides, where can a moderator go to let off some steam once in a while.

Rage3d? :D

I had my wisdom teeth removed by surgery over ten years ago. The most important thing about recovery for me was the drinking of shakes for bodybuilders. It was better to drink those bodybuilder shakes for nourishment than to try to eat solid foods for the first few days after surgery.

I have been thinking about starting a website called RANT.

A no holds barred website for anybody to just spew, rant, rage, flame and generally unload anything that is stuck in their computer craws.

The sections of the forums would have names like:
Blazing Saddles - for general flammage
Bite ME - for one-on-ones
I hate Intel & AMD
I hate! - the meet and greet section
Why I think Bill Gates is the Anti-Christ - Windows
You Idiot! - general hardware
Ugliest Case Gallery
The Alzeihmer's Memory Forum
Who the frikken hell would use Linux - for Linux

I have a consultation first then a recommendation which is bound to be get all 4 teeth out. No pain, no gain. The website should be up and ready by then. I am looking for moderators and bouncers.

:-)

All moderators from other websites will be expected to use different names as this is the place for you to fully participate.

You will be encouraged to use some of the responses you normally hold back from as a moderator, such as:

If you are looking for a driver check with Miss Daisy.
Tried a chainsaw? That should fix it for yah.
Yah, stick yer finger in and you will know for sure the fan is on.
Try Crisco, it gets about 2C better than AS3.
Sure you can try your car battery, 12 volts is 12 volts.
Of course your Nforce 2 board will take the new Prescott yah moron!

That would be me with a dual MP2400 system using RAID5, 1 Gig of PC2100 Buffered Registered RAM, 9500 Pro, and an Enermax server-class 550w EPS12v PSU. :na: :na: :D

Of course you did. The RANT website will certainly not insist on original thought and will more likely attempt to suppress it along with open debate and those that dare to offer any fresh ideas.

Get some sleep. Dream of the new Linux replacing Windows. :yummy:

Hehe, that was as nice sig but my employer has reorged the organization I was part of-I have been reduced to being just a programmer. Being a System Analyst reduced to working for a monarchy is very hard on me. It's no wonder I have been having so much stress lately.

Here's what I'm going through: http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=535699#post535699 and there's a little more on another post below that one.

Yah that sucks.

I have been in a similar place and got past it.
You will too and with success.

My solution was to retire.
Hang in there.
