Anybody know anything abuot this new fandangled contraption ?? :p It says it is 8x faster than wireless G. I thought 54mb/s was overkill as it is, why would anyone need something faster? What kind of benifit would this router have (over a regular wireless G) in a household with only a few computers??

I understand it has greater range, but im talking strictly from a speed standpoint, is this thing worth it? It's $199.99 @ Best Buy. :suspect:

Well coverage is better, this is their interim soultion until the Wireless N hits the market. From a bandwidth point of view, there should be no benefit. The router is still limited by the ISP.

A negative to this is you need the new card that only works with this technology. :beat:

Just as I figured, no real benefit to the average home user. I guess you could see a speed increase if you were transfering files or gaming on a wireless LAN, but for surfing the net the ISP would be a major bottleneck, even to 802.11b. Its like a car that can go 200mph stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, good potential but no way to use it. :(

Reason I ask is because I have a friend who always wants the latest and greatest thing, he is all hyped up thinking this is the ticket to a faster network/internet in his home. :yikes: Don't worry i'll break it to him gently.

The signal strength is a big plus I think...Im using some Wireless-G router from Linksys provided by my ISP and the wireless sucks ass (thankfully Im directly connected :D ) . My moms PC is at a constant LOW level and is right across the hall in the dining room, or as they like to call it the "Library"...book shelfs dont constitute that a library thank you.

If you want more bandwidth from your router to a liner direction you might want make new antennas for your router. Here (http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/) are some directions for WiFi antennas. But it is much more profesh looking to buy them from somewhere. They make about a 25 – 30 % increase in signal strength and latency is greatly reduced. I am able to stream most DVD content downstairs and still have my WiFi Vonage phone still work. And yes i do have the SRX.
