My Athlon64 Preview just went up at www.anandtech.com. I'm comparing an Opteron at 2.0GHz with P4, nForce2, KT600 and Dual Xeon. Just thought I'd let my old friends here know about it.

It's nice to see a refreshing review of the AMD platform. Thanks for letting us know, Prom. :)
Wow, looks like the Athlon 64 (FX) will be a good competitor to the P4C after all. Prescott, I image, will up the stakes though.
Thanks Prom!

I don't think it's the Prescott that is going to cause a problem. It's time for PCI Express which I believe is coming later this year with the non-478 pin Prescotts. 32-bit bus limitations need to be addressed and removed. At least with the 64-bit proc you have room to grow if you have a 64-bit bus. Once the Prescott is running on the new pin design with PCI Express then you should see some very interesting results.
Great. . . Off to read. . . . . :D
Well, with a 1MB cache (which affects P4s more than Athlons anyway) and a number of other core improvement, I think we could be seeing a ~20% average improvement w/Prescott even on Sckt 478. But yes, 04Q2 should be very interesting.

Looks like a new and exciting time for CPU's is about to emerge. My next build was going to be Intel, but I may look at AMD Athlon64 as well. Thanks Prometheus!

Do you really think that it will show a 20% enhancement? The large cache of the P4EE isn't as usefull as Intel would like it to be ;) . But that's 3rd level - not 2nd level cache.
Well, let's get surprised. I'd like to see AMD on top for at least some weeks - better: months. It would be good for AMD to get some CPUs sold...
Bye,

Prescott's 1MB cache is L2 AFAIK. But, so far it looks like prescott may be less formidible than I first thought, well see soon enough.

AFAIK it's 2nd level. I just wanted to point out that the very large 3rd-level cache pf the P4EE did not boost the performance as well as Intels marketing says. And as a VERY BAD approximation I thouht: 3MB 3rd-Level may be somehow compareable with 512k of extra 2nd-Level cache... :chit: ... don't thinkt about it any longer :D
Let's wait for Benchmarks.
I suppose Intel to screw the MHz higher so they have a performance boost anyway. And they will present it by marketing the Cache.
Greetings,
Ghostrider
