windows xp install gone bad...

ok, i've been having stability issues with my comp for a month or so. i did a clean install of xp....everything went fine untill it automatically reboots after the first part. when it reboots and continues the install it goes up untill around 26 seconds to go...and freezes. i tried everything and nothing would get it past that point untill i tried underclocking the cpu from its normal 2200mhz(200fsb x 11x multiplier) down to 2000mhz(200fsb x 10x multiplier). after i did this it finished installing xp and seemed fine for a while. then began freezing and crashing at random points...mostly while under load...and alot while playing everquest 2. i ran prime95 and burnin and they showed errors...prime95 showed a hardware error and burnin showed an error on the mmx/sse test that read "incorrect 128bit (SSE-SIMD) floating point addition". i know there is no hardware trouble as everything else runs fine in other systems. my psu is MORE than sufficient with 35a on the 12v rail. might be the ram since its 2 different brands and different timing (however in bios i loosened the timings to 2.5-3-3-7 to try to get it stable). i have ran memtest86+ under the 200 x 11 setting and had no errors with both sticks of ram after a bunch of passes...if i try under or overclocking...i get crazy errors. i know the root of my troubles is the xp install...it should go through the entire process on the same clock speed. anyone have a similiar problem or any advice for me...i would be so happy if i could just get this system i spent so much $ on up and stable...thanks all.

You say your hardware runs fine in other machines, but if tests are showing CPU errors and it crashes under load, sounds like you may have a messed up CPU. When you underclocked, did you bring it back up to default? Your RAM passes the tests I assume, as it did Memtest...so if everything is OK, it's most likely the CPU. Do you have another compatible CPU you can try?

Clarify which of the memory stick you are utilizing, for obviously you cannot be running both in there at different timing.

I would remove one stick, and redo the intsall with only one stick in the system. All should install with no problem and no windows hanging. If it does, try again but with the other stick in the system.

Once you got windows install without any hanging, then you could install the other stick. But honestly running 2 different brand of stick, which are probably rated at different timing could be your main problem.

I agree with BB_One......... try it with only 1 stick of ram. They may both be good, but running 2 completely different sticks is never a good idea. :)
