Does anyone know how to get rid of A disk read error. I used FDisk and it worked, but I installed a new HD (western dig 160 g) and I FDisk it with win 98, but I partitioned with Win Xp Pro and when system rebooted to complete win xp installation, I got disk read error, press ctl alt del again. I FDisk another HD the same way and it worked with no problem, why it won't work this time I'm not sure. Any suggestions?
I partitoned with Win Xp because I wanted NTFS partition. Also, the only way I can get on the system is to connect another HD with Win 2000 on it, from there I formated the WD160 HD and linstalled Win XP pro and it worked, but when I take the Win 2000 HD off and try to reboot from the WD160 HD , it goes back to disk read error, press ctl alt. Help please :?:

So, with the 160GB drive, there is 1 NTFS partition with Windows XP on it.

When you boot it, you get a disc error, and it says ALT.CTRL.DEL to continue.

But connecting to another machine, ex. Windows 2000, this drive is now a slave, you can see it's contents.

Is that right?

Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so. NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, use the fixboot command.

Let me know how it works of if you get an error.

ok, I'll try that, but one problem, everytime I try to use the recovery console and I enter the adm password it doesn't reconize the password. I use the one that I created during setup. What am I doing wrong?

 Make sure you are using Administrator and the right password. If not, search for a linux based proggie that can change the admin password, and try again.

Yes, but let us know if you get another error. The recovery console can almost fix anything. . . . .

The fixboot did not work. I'm going to install the recovery console from within windows and try it from there. Also, could it be files are missing, or a bad copy of win xp? had to reload Win 2000, becasue I got the same error, disk read error, but it told me that file NTLDR was missing, and I reloaded win 2000 and system came up, so I'm wondering If WIN Xp is somehow missing files.

I finallly got rid of the Disk read error. I did a FDISK with Win 98 and booted to the recovery console with Win XP, after Win XP loaded and I had the option for reI finally got rid of covery console, I chose recovery. I coundnot use the recovery console because I didn't have an adm password, but it gave me a c: promt. I did a fixboot at the the c:promt, loaded windows startup disk SP1A, loaded Window XP with SP1, and from there windows loaded and got rid of the disk read error. After loading Windows Xp with SP1 and did a new installation with Windows Xp with SP2.
