HI
I am getting a " Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" when i start my computer. When i connected it as a secondary hard drive, I am able to see the hard drive letter in Mycomputer but i am not able to go into that drive. It is asking my to format the drive. I don't want to do it. Can you please help me in getting into this harddrive with out formatting. This hard drive was workin fine yesterday and todaymorning it started to behave like this. This is a new machine from dell. I haven't changed any thing on that. My operating system is windows xp professional. can any one help me?

Ummm... you been on the internet or received email, copy from not so sure floppies, connected on a home lan with a possible compromised pc?

Did you have a virus scanner active?

Tyrone

Yes i did have a virus scan active...

Also i changed the Motherboard and the CPU...

What to do without erasing what is on the HD

Ok if we are sure it is not a virus, then I suggest going to your hard drive manufacturer site. look in their download section for a utility that can verify the hard drive, it can scan and sometimes fix problems on hard drive. If there is none you might want to try seagate or Hitachi, they seem to work with other manufacturers drive.

Have you run a CHKDSK on the drive via the console?

Hawk I think there something wrong with my XP copy after changing Motherboards and CPU because i can not even go into safe mode it starts to and then restarts the PC.

Also when I put in the Boot disk(s) it prompts me to the screen were i should either install XP or Press R for recovery but once i Press R it brings me to the C:/ drive and when i type in chkdsk nothing happens...

What should i do?

Bud, what motherboard did you change from and what is it now? There is an issue with the disk driver then. If you can get to the recovery console, a fixmbr might fix the issue. I need to know more details.

See here as his original post concerning this:

If I read these right, the OS's were installed on a different mobo prior to swapping CPU and mobo.
Which would explain a lot. I don't think my reply there was suitable for him.

Hmmm, Gigabyte to Gigabyte should be fine. Let's wait for him to post back, but I think a fixmbr at the recocery console will fix it.

Hawk, just a thought but will/would'nt any possibly installed bios/large disk translation sw negatively interfere with using /fixmbr?
I would think that by issuing that that it would quite likey loose data due to the software "masking' the drives current geometry.
If this is the case, the drive's manufacturer should have an uninstall utility to use prior to trying this.

Otherwise, yea. I would think having the drive as slave and issuing /fixmbr should'nt concern any stored data.

Just my 2 pennies worth,
.. Rick

It depends, I have changed boards with different models and the fixmbr has worked. Problem is will a fixmbr make it any worse. Nope, if it does not work, the only alternative I can think of is DOS with NTFS to get the important files and or Wintenals ERD 2003.

Would reinstalling Windows Xp work just to reload what every files were missing?

Yes, but a FIXMBR is faster and easier to do from the start.

I was going to do it but when i started to it said something along the lines of this is non standard if I was to do it it was going to mess up the partition. along those lines

I want to keep the data on my HD so all precations i am taking

Try a re-install then. That will also prompt before data loss.

Also, if you have another drive, install Windows to it and make the original drive a slave and see if you can pull the data off.

It is wierd because i do have another drive and i did change to a slave drive and the other to the master.

But i could not excess the drive it should the drive letter but when i went to click on it would not let me.

I also right clicked on the properties and it would not show and data used or not used
But i ran the Maxtor Powermax and it said the drive was fine in all areas..

I'd reconnect in that setup and see if you can run a chkdsk from the command line.
Maybe the 2 partition tables are mixed up.

I tried running chkdsk in the command line and nothing happen. Not sure of what it said but basically it would not work..

Confusing at best tho I figured replacing a motherboard with the same brand altho a different model would not change things like it did and also the CPU.

I'd really be curious to know the chkdsk error. If that does not work, then I don't have any other advice.

Download a program called get data back (you will need to use google i can't remember the site name) run that and see if it will access your drive this would be the only other option if you do not wish to use the other methods suggested, also go to the drive manufacturers site and use the online diagnostic tools to find the problem

That will not work for me seeing i do not have another PC at the moment and the $60 -$70 price tag is steep at the moment.

I Just hope installing windows XP will solve my issue there was nothing wrong before this.

I Can not understand why chkdsk would not work.

I hear ya bud. . . When you ran ChkDsk, did you use any switches?

Make sure you run CHKDSK /r

Tyrone

I did not I only typed CHKDSK and it said a file could not be found to run it.

Putting the /r that will most likely prompt the same thing

When the machine is up and running, make sure CHKDSK is in the local path to run. Otherwise, copy it to a floppy and run it from there.

CHKDSK is located in c:\windows\system32

or, here it is in ZIP format

I did not follow you on this one when the machine is up and running? do you mean when the problem i am having is solved?

Or run it to do a CHKDSK?

Hawk

Use the file attached and put it on a bootable floppy disk. You can get anything you want at www.bootdisk.com Then add the chkdsk file I attached.

Boot you machine with the boot cd with you hard drive attached and run chkdsk from the a: drive with this CHKDSK c: /r

Let us know how it works

No, that is not what chkdsk does. It checks the consisty of the drive and partition tables.

Everything is fine now, what I did was reinstall XP and the files and drive that were missing were installed.
