A friend of mine asked about his computer, he has a couple year old Intel 966 machine he just reformatted and loaded XP Pro. He says now everytime he clicks start>shut down>shut down, the computer reboots instead of turning off and he has to kill the power supply. Everything was normal before the reformat. Any ideas on what to check??
In Device Manager, is the Computer listed as Standard PC or ACPI? It should be ACPI

Sorry, it took me a bit to get ahold of the guy.
Yes it`s listed as ACPI in the device manager.
Ok, that is oen less thing to look at then. What I think is happening is there is a failure on shutdown that is not being logged. Ask him to try this, if this works, we can narrow it down further.
It can be a cause of Roxio Ez-CD with older drivers, APM, USB, wakon settings.
Try this:
Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”
