I'm going nuts..

Trying to backup a couple of my movies to DVD+RW discs (philips) using my new NEC ND 1300A burner.

Worked perfect, played perfect in my lite-on DVD-ROM player and in my DVD player in the living room.

Now, I can't get my lite-on and stand-alone player to read the DVD+RW discs anymore... Fiddled around with some firmwares but no luck.. Even restored from an image.. No luck. (EDIT: I can still use the ones I burnt last week, just not the 2 new ones).

Oh... those burnt discs read fine in my NEC... what's up with that?

Any ideas? ;)

I have problems with 2 of the 3 DVD+RW discs (philips) from the same 3-pack. 1 disc is fine. The other 2 won't let me read them in my hi-fi DVD player and my lite-on DVD drive.

I think Somehow the media ID/code was overwritten during the burning process... I was fiddling with different kinds of burning applications (e.g. copytodvd, AnyDVD and such) when the problems started.

When I use DVDinfo (I can still write/read the 2 'faulty' discs in my NEC) I get almost all zeros for the media code/ID as it should look like this:

08 02 00 00 92 0F 04 00 00 03 00 00 00 24 1A DF .............$..
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 43 4D 43 20 4D 41 47 00 57 .......CMC MAG.W
30 31 00 39 23 00 8A 7A 62 02 1E 00 86 80 62 02 01.9#..zb.....b.
28 00 8A 7A 5E 02 1E 13 12 10 00 10 00 00 00 00 (..z^...........

Below is the media code from the 2 DVD+RW discs I burnt and are now unreadable by my hi-fi DVD player and my lite-on:

00000000 08 02 00 00 92 0F 04 00 00 00 00 00 00 26 05 3F .............&.?
00000010 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
00000020 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
00000030 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

My question for the DVD gurus: is there any way the media ID/descriptor could be overwritten by a burning application so that they may become unreadable. And if true, how can I restore them?

2 discs wouldn't be worth the trouble. But the fact that I think my burner overwrote the media code of the discs and that is pretty bad I guess... Just wonder if it's possible.

I also noticed that Nero changes the media ID block when you write to a DVD+RW. So in theory I should be able to restore the media code on the discs and still be able to use it.

Thanks to ProfessorFate for moving my thread! ;)

Well... something is playing tricks with me.

I returned the 3 DVD+RW discs and got a new pack.

Burning with Nero no success.... cannot read the 1st disc in my lite-on drive.

Burnt the 2nd disc with cloneDVD... Perfect!

Now I'm trying that 1st disc with cloneDVD and see what gives...

Sub, what version of nerio are you running...There have been reports and one even in a thread in this sub forum about ppl having problem burning with nero.

Also what program and brand of dvd-rw's are you using???

I use DVD-rw and possibly nero has a bug with dvd+rw format which requires a slightly different process since there is no lead-in and lead-out as we are accustomed to in most burns...

Duvie, I'm using the latest one.. 6.0.1.1 I think.

CD+RW does seem to have lead-in and lead-out areas and nero is also writing some sort of 'high compatibility border''. It seems to not have anything to do with Nero since CloneDVD had the same problems with the disc.

I'm using Philips DVD+RW 2.4x discs. Should be allright I guess but now I'm starting to doubt their quality.

I know you must be familiar with DVDInfo and for some reason the media ID is sort of blank for the faulty discs. I hate to think (for Philips that is) that they are shipping faulty discs.

If someone finds out anything about these discs or the problems I'm experiencing, please let me know! ;)

I bought a couple of nashua dvd+rw discs a couple of weeks ago and both actually did perfect.... I hated nashua before but now it is actually the only 'series' I tried which worked 100%.

The next discs I'll buy will be nashua's until one fails...
