View Full Version : To 2.4B or to 2.4C?? That is the question

Hi guys
As the thread says i don't know which processor to grab tommorow. 2.4C will take full advantage of my memory practically straight away while the 2.4B won't.
I've seen many great things from the 2.4C's clocking wise but the 2.4B is still right behind it.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Here is my vote for the "C"!
While your RAM is good RAM and can do better than DDR400 you would have to push the "B" harder on the FSB to get up there and I don't think your timings would be as tight as you can get them with a "C". With the "C" your RAM still has a little headroom and you will get better performance from it.
EDIT: Also, If your i875 board is like mine (Mine is a P4C800) then it will give you hell trying to get DDR400 with a "B" chip. I have an "A" in mine and can't get 333! :(

why arent you using the 4:5 mem ratio?

The RAM seems to be stuffed....otherwise the board doesn't like it.
Computer doesn't boot with RAM @ 400 2-3-3-6 and 2.8v. Memtest errors out at 405 2-4-4-8 and even 2.5-4-4-8.
I'm hoping to exchange the RAM for 2x 256 sticks of Kingston HyperX PC3500 and a 2.4 processor.

4:5 Ratio Testing...Memtest86 Results
160 FSB DDR 400 2-3-3-6: Boot up fails (fails to detect the ide devices)
160 FSB DDR 400 2-4-4-8: Test 4 got an interpution halt
162 FSB DDR 405 2.5-3-3-6: Test 4 got 8 errors and Test 5 got 5604 errors
I don't know if i can say the RAM is faulty but it doesn't look like it can handle its rated speed of DDR 433 @ 2-3-3-6 with 2.6v
Hope u understand my problem know thugs
Anybody else got an opinion on which processor to get??

If the ram doesn't do spec I would have sent it back.

2.4C has Hyperthreading, 2.4B doesn't. Hyperthreading can give a pretty nice performance boost.
You will ahve to do something about that ram.

I look at it this way....Going to get a new cpu I would definitely step up to the newer c technology with HT then sit with a B for awhile longer while the prescott is about to come out and put you 2 series back....
I am ready for a C but may wait for 2.8c to get right to 200 or sub...I need to get at least 3.6ghz coupled with the HT gains and DCDDR mobo gains to make it worth coming from where I am now...

Ok thanx guys for ur input.
I got my 2.4C yesterday and 1x256MB of Kingston HyperX PC3500 and the other stick is in the mail. I might overclock today but won't stay overclocked till i get the new RAM (single chanel is too slow theoretically)
Some info on the processor: Pack Date: 26/6/03 so its 2 months old.
Its also a malaysian cpu
Batch code: 0322A160
