Hey guys, I have dug myself into a little bit of a rut back here. I have set up a home network, the problem is with my wifes laptop she can ping my computer and the ICS server with no problems but my computer and the ICS computer can not ping the laptop also when you go to view what computers show on the network only my computer and the ICS computer show up. I have tried running the network setup wizard a number of times on her PC but no luck

these are the settings i have used on both my PC and my wifes laptop

DHCP= Enabled
ip address= set to auto assign
DNS suffix= mshome.net
DNS server = 192.168.0.1
Default gateway = 192.168.0.1

LAN chipsets
my rig = realtek rtl 8139
laptop(asus A2) = SiS

although the laptop connects to the net and sends and recieves emails over the lan with no problems I want to be able to access it for file sharing etc over the lan from my rig. any other ideas on how to rectify this issue would be greatfully appreciated

I was confused there for a sec, but I guess your ICS server is doing DHCP and NAT duties for you, effectively acting as a router.

How about running ipconfig /all from a command prompt and posting up the results?

I don't really see anything out of the ordinary there.. :( sorry about all those screen grabs...

What is the rest of the setup? Are all the computers running the same OS? The ICS has a nic and a dial-up modem? The ICS nic connects to a switch or something and your comp and the laptop connect to the switch?

The not being able to ping is strange. You are pinging with IP addresses and not computer names and the requests are timing out?

The ICS is using the onboard 10/100 NIC all pc's are running XP PRO (ICS and my rig are running xp pro corp) the modem is a dynamode A360 usb the ICS is connected to a 5 port switch and the laptop and my rig are hooked into there, it is strange how i can ping the ics from my rig and ping my rig from the ICS but not the laptop. I have been using the ip addresses to ping the computers.

Cheers

Evilangel....you say 5 port switch.....don't see to many of those...is one of the ports labeled "uplink" and possibly has a sort of "line" drawn over to the port next to it......if that is the case and you have a computer plugged into the uplink port and the one next to it.....disconnect the cable in the "uplink" port and put it in one of the others, see if that helps. :)

umm...are you running anything on the laptop that blocks/disables ICMP? Might be the culperet.

I had already checked to make sure i had not plugged into the uplink all pc's are using ports 1,2 and 3. there is nothing on the laptop that is running that could block ICMP apart from the usual windows firewall and pccillin

I don't know what to say about you being unable to ping the laptop from the other two computers. It's not making a lot of sense to me especially since you are able to hit the net.

Ignoring the ping problem for a sec (which I wouldn't if I was there) do you have folders shared on the laptop?

Take a look at the settings below. I'm not using the sp2 firewall, but these are the default setting as far as I know. This is the first I've looked at these windows and it seems weird again that one tab as icmp echo checked and the other does not. I know the 1394 connection is highlighted - that was by accident for the screen shot, but the NIC settings were exactly the same as what's shown.

Have you enabled netBIOS for TCP/IP? I know XP home has issues with the Defalut setting with reading info from a router. Make sure on the screenie below, at the bottom, you ENABLE NetBios. .
