I want to add some ramsinks onto the power mosfets on my motherboard, I am going to trial this week a thermaltake duct and have it pointed at the mosfets to direct outside air onto them.

The concern I have is the fact that the coils in the area i want to heatsink are very close to the mosfets and i am a tad worried about having a heatsink touch and cause the coil to short. I was talking to snafu this morning on msn about the idea of using silicon on the coils to insulate them but there would then be the problem with heat being trapped

Also here is a photo of the problem area any ideas or suggestions would be great

Cheers

How about those? I used some on my mosfets, they cut easily with a hacksaw so you can make them just the size of the mosfet, and not worry about contact with the coils.

Throwing some ideas :)

Thanks for the idea, I can get the OCZ ramsinks over here but they are a premium price $59.95NZD. i may have to do some more searching for cheap ramsinks here in new zealand

Ryder i have emailed you via the email link in your sig

Harley those heatsinks are nice I have seen them on motherboards and graphics cards on various forums and they definitely add some spice to the pc

Can you butcher up an old heat sink from an early P4 days or from an old NB heat sink?

They worked good on my first board actually picked up a bunch of differant sizes. I went and put them on any chip that was warm to the touch. Here's a pic of them on the mosfets on my Neo2. Sorry it's a bit blurry. But lookin at the pic reminds me I still have to order more for my other board.

have you lapped your cpu heatspreader or it is the reflection of the camera flash? if you did lap the cpu how many degrees has it dropped after you did it and what grits of sandpaper did you use?

Yeah but...... actually cut the heat spreader off. Used AS5 and reassembled. Also lapped the inside of the spreader. Raised in grit up to 1000. The only problem is when I cut the spreader off I also nicked the board. The cpu worked for awhile then slowly started loosing it's OC. It required more and more voltage to be stable at lower speeds. I actually have a thread on it here (http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=34075) . Needless to say after about 3 weeks or so I bought a new 3500+. I did try it again without the spreader (which is when I found the cut). I used hot glue on the cut and rubber spacers on the corners. I couldn't get it to boot one day I will look at it better and try to boot it. I had originally dropped 3-4C I would say which isn't that much considering I had to get a new cpu. :hide:

Well I finally got the ramsinks to do the mosfets so far all i have done is the mosfets I could put the ramsinks on without having to do any cutting, I will be digging out the hacksaw to trim up two ramsinks to do the last two mosfets that sit between the power coils but the areas done so far are below the ram slots and the mosfet that sits between the AGP slot and the first PCI slot

Also thanks goes to ryder for getting the ramsinks from new egg for me and sending them over
