My dad teaches internet classes and he was pinging over the blaster worm - comcast was actually calling customers with a recording telling them how and where to install and get the required patch and how to clean their systems- anyway I went over to help him out. He had been running cable directly with no firewall whatsoever so I bought him a d-link di-604 4 port router with NAT/Firewall based on some good reviews I read - this was some months ago and it had been working fine for all that time. Until tonight. As an afterthought, when I was finished running the virus scan/patches (he was clean and up to date anyway) I decided to do the port scan at grc.com. It showed a response from port 113 (ident) and also showed the router responding to pings. Unfortunately, rather the properly configuring the router I went straight to a firmware upgrade. It didn't complete properly according to their directions. IE6 just displayed a connection error page several seconds after I hit the upgrade button. I logged back in to the router and the firmware revision was upgraded but the "media disconnected" balloon keeps popping up every minute or so and l lose all connectivity to the router. Obviously this makes web browsing all but impossible. I tried reverting back to a previous firmware revision, no go. I rebooted, reset, drop-kicked everything, but the problem persists. Throttling the NIC back to 10/full or 10/half seems to help a little, but not completely. It is not a cable problem, as I brought the stupid thing back to my place and had the same difficulty. I emailed d-link. Any other ideas?

Since I hate it when people don't come back and post their fixes, d-link emailed me back and this was the fix:

1. Hold in the reset button for 20 seconds
2. While holding in the reset button for 20 seconds unplug the power cord
3. Plug back in the power cord and wait 10 more seconds then release the reset button

When I tried to log back into the router via IE6, it immediately asked for a path to a firmware file. I pointed it to a previous version, the update was a success, and the router resumed normal ops.

So, there it is, a follow-up post. :yummy:
