View Full Version : Is it possible for a OS to deteriorate?

Im running Windows 2003 Server. Well, everytime I reinstall, even after a complete reformat, Windows seems to act weirder and weirder. Like, the first install of 2003 was flawless, I had complete system stability, only reason I had to reinstall was because I wasnt the only one using the PC, so alot of junk (spyware, viruses) were on it, a cleanable job, but just better to reformat. Well, ever since then (even though Im on entirely new hardware) Windows 2003 just seems to keep giving me problems and they seem to be getting worser on every reinstall (each time with a fresh reformat, and new CD). Even after fresh installs its only a matter of weeks before weird stuff starts happening out of nowhere. Like here today (which brought me to writing this), whenever I do a search using IE or try to send an instant message on AOL Instant Messenger, they both close with no errors or anything, just bam, theyre gone. Even after complete Reg cleaning, spyware removing, virus scanning, the complete works, I still have problems. All the hardware in my system is completely stable, so its all software related. Even before becoming a major PC user, when I was a complete n00b, I never had problems like this, granted I was using XP Home, but does it really matter? Im being 2 firewalls (router and BlackIce) and neither detects abnormal internet activity, so I heavily doubt its a hacker. I just want to know if anyone else has ever experienced a problem like this before on any OS, MS or not. I know Windows 2003 isnt meant for home use, but Ive had it running perfectly fine before and it always seems to run fine but only before a certain amount of time before it starts getting funky. Im a very experienced PC user and dont ever install anything that I know isnt safe to install. I just dont get why I keep getting problems  . Any comments or advice would be appreciated!

I haven't messed around with my 2k3 box to notice anything, are you installing any software from a back up or is it straight from original cd?

AS Thugs suggested, could be hardware about to go on the way side.

One other possibility that I have in mind, specially since you have been infected it seems in prior installs and system was used by many.

Boot Sector virus, a format of the hard disk may not eliminate it, some are pretty smart and swing around it.

In such case you need to run your antivirus from a ''write protected floppy'', after which you might even have to reformat the drive again, but this time making sure u use the following switch

fdisk /mbr

I agree with both Thugs & BB. . .

Spyware is the #1 thing today screwing with the OS's. . . . .
