okay...
so i have 2 x 36.7 gig raptors on a fasttrak 150 s-ata raid card (i got this back in the day of my shuttle an50r which did not have pci lock)...
the nice thing about this card and having my raptors on them is that i don't have to break the partitions when i move from one board to another (except reformat my o/s which i can do blindfolded now :))
the problem is... when i stick in the pci card, it goes through the normal check of seeing if the hard drives are configured for raid... and then it gets stuck... nothing happens... :(
2 questions...
1. anyone know a solution for this?
2. if i do remove my raid from the pci card and plug them into SATA 1/2 on my mobo, will all my partitions be lost?
thanks! :)

I've seen that in a few of our dell servers, it may be the card. You can move the drives but don't initialize...we transfered the drives in the same order to another powervault so I'm not sure if that will work here. See if you can clear the NVRAM. I think you'll have to set up again but don't initialize as you will loose all you data.

thanks! i'll try it.
if it is the card that is causing the problem, which it looks like it is...
how can i recover the data on my two hard drives?

as far as I know if you don't initilize the raid when you do the config it should be fine. basically what you do is on the new card you put the exact same setup as what you have i.e. strip size and make sure the dirves are in the same slot too again drive one on the card should be drive one on the sata and etc. I'm not familar with the setp on the sata, what I am reference is on a dell perc 3 controller with it's software so it may vary for you. forgot to ask, what type of raid are you running?

i'm running raid 0
when you say "don't initialize" what do you mean?

that's a good question. On the dells in the firmware for the raid setup there is an option to "turn on" the raid, basically bring'n it online at that moment. I've never done a raid setup on a PC(ide or sata) per se so I'm not sure if there is that options as well. I'm pretty sure there would be an option similar to it but there might be something that might say are you sure you want to do this as all data will be lost if you do. I'm gonna thumb the net really quick to see if I can find you an answer.

shimmishim - are you saying that you have an OS already running on this machine, and you are adding these drives and the controller card?

You might be running into a boot order issue....when you add the card and then reboot, the bios might be trying to boot from the card instead of your normal boot drive....double check the bios boot order and make sure the boot from "scsi" or "add in card" is disabled.

well i would like to eventually run these raptors on my new machine and move my 160 gig maxtor to my secondary
argh... looks like i might have to break them apart :(
i'll try to see if i can transfer all my files though from my secondary rig cuz i know my controller card works in it
edit:
on a brighter note... i now have....
160 + 160 + 60 + 60 + 36.7 + 36.7 = 500+ gigs of storage!!! more than half way to a teragig :)

SO I take it you're going a different route??? I just got back from Tikrit so I haven't been on.

well....
what i did was...
i loaded my O/S onto a 160 gig maxtor (8 mb cache) (dual boot)
and the raptors work on my nf7-s but my board or some other component decided to take a crap so i think that board might be dead...
so i have 2 raptors here that are sitting pretty doing nothing... :( (unused hardware makes me sad)
i'm gonna see if i can messa round more with the nf7-s and see if i can get it to boot to the o/s... then copy all my files and such that i need from the raptors to my extra 160 gig-er i got then reset the raid on the SATA 1/2 ports on the epox board...
yeah... :)
ps... i got a crappy winchester... can't even do 2.55 stable on air :(

well good luck, I wish I knew a tad bit more about sata raid so I could be of further use.
