I don't if many are aware of this but dvdshrink actually times the entire process...If you make sure you copy data to HDD first and then run it we can avoid dvd-rom speeds and then it should be pure cpu speed....

but it always comes down to what file to use right?
and how are you gonna distribute that file for all to use?
legally ~ it would have to be a commercial or a trailer or something like that that is freely distributable.
ive found that Prime95 benchmark is a very good approximator for encoding.
its not perfect, but its quick and simple.

...and again you have the problem of what file to use. I think something like this would rock as a real-world benchmark, it's getting everyone to use the same thing...:)

Update guys....
After some preliminary research the transcoder in dvdshrink (as I have not tried any other transcoders yet) does not tax the system enough IMO to be an effective tool...
5-10% compression = 15-20% utilization
25-30% ciompression = 45-50% utilization
45-50% compression = 75-80% utilization
stills = <20%
no compression = 10-15% utilization
Now this is with normal priority, but I had nothing else running. It is also with me running 3ghz range and not in the mid 2ghz or less..I may need to test it.....
I know rempeg taxes the cpu harder but takes a helluva long time for equal or less quality. I have stopped using that program almost 1 year ago....
I have some DV coming that will be free to use.im also working on using the OLD FREE build of TMPGenc maybe.
Regards HT...just swtitch it off
