Came across this piece of software. If you run IM and use various packages (MSN, ICQ, Yahoo...) for different folks then this just might be for you. Here's some background to Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/about.php).
Haven't had a chance to give it a try but it sounds great. Read about it in my favorite tech mags and they praise it.
Post what you think if you are Gaim enough to try it ;)

Well it turns out I had a copy on Disk (comes with rag subscription). So gave it a go last night.
I was able to hook up all my MSN and ICQ contacts under one window.
One great feature of Gaim is the ability to give everyone an alias name. No more "who the hell is Snafu-Nader?" or "buddy[at]hotmail?". The alias names you assigned appear on the screen. If you ever want you can always see the original details by holding teh cursor over their name or right-click and tell it to get info.
Gaim let's you sign in automatically if you let it save your passwords. I don't so there is one small annoyance when I log into MSN. I always receive a "message" of HTML code (more likely MS thanking me for some such thing - just an annoyance).
I hope to test it out with a few conversations with folks over different IM protocols.
Will post back.

I installed it - no system tray icon? When you close the window the program is closed - this isn't typical behavior for a chat client. Other than that it's OK I guess, haven't had a chat with anyone yet though -
Have you guys ever tried Trillian:

Same idea. I used it a couple of reformats ago and it was pretty slick.

I like that it does not clutter up the system tray.
I have to get use to the sounds and what they mean.

i've used it for a while. Simplier than aim and has not ads or spyware.

I put Trillian Basic on my girl's rig. They dig it - it's got all the pretty GUI and nice sounds to go with. Hook up to AIM and Yahoo! Messenger was a snap. One thing about it though, I fought with Trillian for about an hour trying to get it to log in to their MS IM accounts (the ones through hotmail), and it would not cooperate! SO I searched the Trillian forums and found posts where others had reported trouble between Trillian and MS also...I wonder if it's resolved yet, that was about three weeks ago.
Killer Munkey - have yiou experienced this?
I might give GAIM a try if Trillian doesn't get straightened out with MS IM.

I had no issues with MSN nor with ICQ. It was a snap. Now not sure what cool sounds Trillian has but Gaim are okay - not as hilarious as ICQ sounds.

Oh...the sounds in Trillian are really like modernistic mellow friendly kind of Windows XP sounds - but original ones, not MS ones. I like them better than the W XP sounds.
I need to try the MSN hook up again.

Been using GAIM for about 4 months since I found it on the computers at school. It really makes running 5 accounts at once easy :)

Very easy I find. SImilar to Firefox in that each conversation appears as a tab in a single window rather than having multiple windows open.
Simplified my IM discussions - I have had as many as 4 going on at once using different programs and not an issue in any one of these (except maybe a slow response on my end :o )

I installed it - no system tray icon?
Just found it in the options, go to:
Buddy List window> Tools> Preferences> PlugIns> and select System Tray Icon
