Saw reference to htis on another forum-seems that MS has a memory test. Looking at the instructions it seems to be similar to MemTest86. I wonder if MS came up with this themselves or "borrowed" it.
MS "mem test" (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp#intro)
Anyone use this?

interesting anyone care to compare the tests and understand what they do ?
for windows memory test
Types of memory errors
Window Memory Diagnostic tests are designed to identify the following types of memory errors:
1. An error that occurs when a memory address fails to retain its assigned value
2. An error called a coupling fault, which occurs when a memory address is altered by writes to other addresses on the same memory device
To determine whether a memory address fails to retain its assigned value, Windows Memory Diagnostic writes a test pattern, such as all zeroes or all ones, into the memory address and then reads the actual value stored in the memory address. If the actual value does not match the expected value (which is the original test pattern written into the address), then there is an error in the memory system.
To determine whether there is a coupling fault, Windows Memory Diagnostic writes a test pattern into a memory address. Next, several other memory addresses on the same device are written to. Finally, the value in the first memory address is read to see if it has changed. If the value in the first memory address has changed (as a result of data being written to other addresses on the device), then a coupling fault has occurred and there is an error in the memory system.
http://memtest86.com/#details - lists what each individual test does
seems windows memory test 1 is similar to memtest86 tests #1, 3, 6, and 7
windows memory test 2 is similar to memtest86 #2 and 4 ???

well i did a simple test with known unstable speed, timings
Memtest86 versus Windows Memory Tester
2x 512MB XMS3500C2 @ 250mhz 2.5-3-3-7 at 3.2v vdimm
in
Memtest86 standard test #1-7 - it errors out in 1st pass of test #5 with 8 errors
Windows Memory Tester standard test #1-6 passed all 6 tests first pass then on second pass the whole screen garbled up into characters, letters and numbers
note: i haven't played with Windows Memory Tester's Advance menu which you access by typing 'M' yet
so it seems Windows Memory tester is missing one test which memtest86 has and that's what happens at test #5 in Memtest86

and we all know how you feel about m86 test #5 ;)
garbled screen is not what i want to see when a memtest errors
thx for the update
I have found the m$ tester more sensitive than M86.It picks up a poor cpu overclock much quicker for one.
Once i play with it more i will get more feel for it but at the mo im using both apps to test.

The MS Tester does not run in Windows. Why do you guys call it the Winodws tester?
