Here's a quick summary of several methods that can be used that make it very easy to backup your valuable DVD collection wether they be 1 layer or 2 layer discs for anyone who hasn't had any experience with this type of software

Duvie has provided links for where to procure all the freeware you'll need to backup your DVDs so here's a quick guide for the steps to doing so for both single layer and 2 layer DVDs***you cannot burn a 2 layer ISO since your DVD+R/+RW is only single layer*** you can however keep it on your HDD and useDaemon tools (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/hd-playback.htm#alternate) to mount it and watch it. If the movie will fit 1.1 on a 4.7gb DVD and is a single layer DVD you can just use DVD Decrypter to backup the movie. press R to bring up the ISO read menu then click on the DVD icon to rip the ISO, then press W to bring up the write menu, click the DVD icon to burn and you're finished. The defaults work fine 99% of the time so unless you run into trouble there's no need to tweak any of the settings.

A real simple way to backup DVDs that are dual layer and too large to fit on your 4.7gb DVD+R=

1) Copy the uncompressed DVD to your HD using DVD Decrypter in "File" mode - select all files, not just the movie
2) Transcode the DVD to fit to 4.7 GB using DVDShrink, DVD2ONE, InstantCopy or Nero Recode.
3) Create an ISO from the result in #2 using ImgTool
4) Burn the ISO from #3 to DVD using DVDDecrypter - ISO - WRITE

For DVDShrink, DVD2ONE, InstantCopy or Nero Recode just read the tutorial for whichever you use for the particulars of how to compress the content to make it fit on 1 disc. I use DVD shrink and unless it's a long movie I can usually get away with re-authoring ***re-authoring does not allow you to keep menus*** you can use ifoedit for that and removing all the extra content like french, spanish, and 2 channel audio, all subtitles, and any extra features included so that I can keep my main movie uncompressed for the best quality DVD shrink can offer for being such an incredibly fast transcoding method.

If you want to keep everything on the DVD just compress things on a priority basis, or in other words, try to use higher compression percentages on the extra features to allow you to keep the main movie as uncompressed as possible as the higher the percentage of compression the lower the quality of the output will be. Don't compress menus though as it can create some bizzare results ;)

I hope this will prove helpful to someone who hasn't experimented with backing up DVDs before and doesn't want to pay for a program to do it but isn't sure what programs they need or what the basic outline of the project entails :) Duvie has linked to Doom9 where you can get all the programs and read the tutorials, this again is just to help give you a basic outline of how to go about it, what you can use depending on the DVD to be copied, and some basic advice on how to keep the IQ as high as possible while still taking advantage of the speed of a transcoder like DVD shrink.

If I made any errors that need to be corrected please let me know so I can edit the content. Also, if you run into a wall trying to use DVD shrink, DVD Decrypter, ifoEdit, or IMGtool just post up and I or someone else will help you out.

Nice post!!!!

Remember the nice feature about dvdshrink is that I can also ajust compression on any part of the DVD and thus get many disk (entire w/ extras) to fit on 1 dvd-rw.

I recently did the movie w/o compression but made the extras and stuff 20-30 compressed and got the entire movie to fit....

I need to play with setting up menu to go with just the movie...

Thanx brudda :) Good point about getting the main movie to fit uncompressed, I didn't go into that as far as perhaps I should. I played with re-authoring a bit but I haven't sat down and tried ifoEdit out though I read the tutorial a few times.

Also, I've been using Nero to burn instead of making an image with IMGTool and using DVD decrypter and so far they all play in my Apex AD500-W. I've read people were having trouble with stand alone DVD playback using Nero but it's great with my cheapo player.

I have always used Nero and I haven't had a problem to date with any standalone player newer then 2 years old from playing any of the disk I have made.....

Another nice feature that has occurred with dvdshrink since I believe version 2.1 is the ability to process it without copy the DVD data to the HDD....I just hit copy disk and direct it to the dvd-rom drive and it reads the ifo files...pick the video_ts one and it will process it like normal and then you can decide if you want to compress the whole thing, parts of the dvd, or reauthor it with just items you want....I can process file in 20minutes or less and now avoid the 10-20min to rip it to the HDD first and then take more minutes to process it...

i always use dvdshrink from the drive, since if i mess up, and can redo it without shoving the cd in again :)

Well I have ran dvdshrink since I think it was beta tested as a program and that options is only a new one. In the past ripping to the drive was a necessity, but ofcourse their wasn't any real transcoders either...
