View Full Version : Any One Have These Issues with Your Browser(s)
Paragon

About a week or two ago I started noticing that many of the sites I visit including this one were loading awfully slow and in many case I was getting a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error in IE 6.0 and "This Page is Not Available..." in Firefox. I also noticied that in most cases after I would hit the refresh button things would work normally. BTW this is a 3Mb Bell South Fast Access connection.
I've tried the following:
1. Deleted Cookies
2. Deleted Cache Files
3. Repaired Winsock
4. Checked for file corruption
5. Restored an image before the issues started happening
6. Checked for spyware: none other than an occasional cookie
7. Checked for viruses and trojans: none
8. Run Hijack this: nothing unusual
9. Cleared DNS cache
10. Rebooted router & modem
11. Checked with ISP about issues on their side: Bell South says there are none
The sight I've had the most difficulty with and it's almost constant is Silent PC Review. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated:D
As always thanks for your help

I got this error when trying to load the page:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: pn_dbmsgerror() in /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/referer.php on line 117
I had about 5 lines of errrors from BE the other night. Started IE again and the site was down.

Yeah there were a few of us who used Bell South Fast Access that had major issues getting on BE about a week ago...which ISP do you use?
I'm using Verizon DSL 3.0/768 and I have had no issues that you are having. If you would like to try and test a few things, let me know. I will definitly be home ealry today to start the Holidays off. . . .
But I think the underlying cause might be routing of the ISP. It's either QWest or  I cannot remember the name of the other one that is used.

I noticed the same Paragon lately. Nothing I do seems to fix it - at least nothing I find that consistently fixes the problem. Maybe it is simply high volume of traffic on the net in general  .
I do noticed that IE becomes a pig and hogs mem like mad (like most MS apps). After a bit of surfing a fair bit with multiple windows it just stops loading up new pages. When I shut IE down it seems to clear itself (even if I do not clear cookies, uploaded files, etc.).
Last night there was a short period where BE would not load up. I think sodface was on playing with the site for a bit ;) .
Weird,
I've had no issues the past 2-3 weeks. . .

I am using Insight cable. I get those annoying stop pages as well after surfing for awhile. Either its really really slow, like dial up or just stops loading.

The site that gives me the most trouble is Silent PC Review (http://www.silentpcreview.com/)...some of the time it runs fine in Firefox, but it either will not load or freezes in IE at my home, but not at work where everything works as it should...I'd love to blame it on SP2; but the system ran fine on SP2 before all this started. I'm thinking it's probably DNS releated since you can hit refresh after you get the "Page Cannot be Displayed" error and that works almost 100% of the time except with Silent PC Review.

I'm also wondering if every ISP is fully optimized to utilize SP2 and if this lack of optimization could be the reason for some if not all of these errors. BTW this happens all the time, it's not just after you've been browsing for a while and loaded the caches up.

One thing I am noticing with my set up is, every time I try a link to silentpcreview, I get the error posted above. If I manually type it in the address bar or click from favorites everything works fine.
Edit: I have tried your link Paragon, got the same error message. I tried a google link, got the same error, but it is only the link to their home page that gives me an error. All other links (folding@home and forums) do not.

Miles, do me a favor and next time you start getting the page cannot be displayed errors, check your event viewer logs and let us know if there are any entries that would coincide with the start of the problem. I have the same issues as you I think - when it happens to me I can barely surf anywhere. I think the problem stems from DNS problems of some kind but I don't know if it's Windows or ISP related. The last time it seemed like the only sites that worked were ones that I had already visited, like google - I'm thinking these IP's were in my local DNS cache and that's why they worked but I'm not sure.
As far as eventvwr goes, I get a lot of entries from ESENT for wuaueng.dll and wuauclt (724) The database engine stopped. - I'm not sure if these have anything to do with anything since I have similar entries here at work. I believe they are related to windows automatic update.
I recently changed my router settings to NOT use the ISP's DNS servers. I manually assigned some different DNS servers from somewhere close to my house - I forget where now, another ISP I think, or a college. Things seem to be working much better since I did that, but we'll see.

The same error here as well... it's on the page... FYI there is an issue with SP2 and connection time outs, there is a hotfix. Install the TCP from SP1 ... hotfix here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;displaylang=en&familyid=17d997d2-5034-4bbb-b74d-ad8430a1f7c8&displaylang=en)

I'm not either and we get the same error, I think it's the way the page may be designed... The error we get points to an Virtual server error, which may be that they are pointing to the wrong server or it can not resolve the server IP to DNS. I was referring to Paragon problem... in XP SP2 they changed the number of connections per sec ... to slow down the spread of a worm ... :suspect: something like 10 connections per sec and this may be why he needs to refresh the page or his network seems slower... I've seen an issue with the connection time out on a couple systems ... except Paragon isn't receiving an error like the others... just a thought

I've had the same problems as Paragon and we both have Bellsouth in S.C. (Columbia and Charleston) I saw the problems before I installed SP2.

That stinks ... good luck trying to get them to fix it ... have either of you tried tracert to see where it stalls or drops? I'm right up the road in MD. using Version DSL 15 hops to www.Silentpcreview.com 54ms on the last two hops ev1s-67-15-76-241.ev1servers.net [67.15.76.241]

I believe if its due to the IE connection to server, there is a registry tweak to set the connection at what ever you want.

If it were just with IE then I'd say probably it's a Microsoft issue, but I get essentially the same errors with Firefox and the system ran flawlessly for months with SP2 before the issues started; I'm kinda thinking carl is on the right track although I will install the hotfix as I guess it could be affecting both...It really seems like it's timing out and in about 10-15 secs.
Carl and I had the same issue a few weeks agao when we couldn't log onto BE at all for several hours, I called Bell South tech support and miraculously it started working a few minutes after I hung up and the said there wasn't anything they could do; go figure:wave:

The hot fix seems to have corrected most of the issues, it's a bit soon to say it's completely fixed; but it's working much more so like it did before the issues started. Thanks for the link Urlyin

NP ... SP2 made quite a few changes in TCP/IP ... as well as NAT and IPsec
... there are several hotfixes ... VPN users could see issues as well ... nothing like a patch to fix the patch to fix the hotfix that broke the fix that was the service pack :coocoo:

Ok, I tried the hotfix. I get this error when following the link to www.silentpcreview.com in Urlyin's post above.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: pn_dbmsgerror() in /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/referer.php on line 117
Are you guys saying you can click that link and get the page to display?
sodface
12-23-2004, 07:11 PM
Well, I think the reason those links in the posts aren't working are because they are being referred from BE. The script producing the error is referer.php - when I open a new browser window (ie) and go to the url, it works fine.
Also, the hotfix said it was to fix problems with tcp/ip loop-back, which really shouldn't have any relevance to what we are talking about here right?
I'm still fairly confident that "unable to display page" errors I was getting were DNS related. I think the Bellsouth DNS was either 1. not returning an IP address when it was requested, or 2. took too long to respond to IE (and firefox) and the browser decided that no response was going to come. Either way the end result is the same.

Do you get a blank page or page not found? You can uninstall and reinstall IE by going to add and remove programs|Windows components uncheck IE and it'll uninstall. Restart and reinstall by checking IE. Due the IE SP's and if you still have issues make sure you don't have any adaware crap ... sometimes registering the following dlls helps:
Go to "Start" -> "Run" -> and register the following dll's by using regsvr32 command:
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
first register the urlmon.dll and actxprxy.dll and restart Internet Explorer.

It finds the page fine but when I enter my acct number and password, it says the info isn't correct, or my acct is locked. Well neither of those are true because it works fine from here at home, or the windows 98 box at work, or my buddies house....you get the picture. I have to believe its an SP2 issue, but the more I look at what this hotfix is for, the more I doubt it will help.
My issue must be with browser security settings or possbily cookie handling, but I can't seem to lick the issue. I have added the site to "trusted", I have set cookies and security to low.....any thoughts? Thanks

Looks like the silent pc site error is because of the software they use over there as explained in this Post (http://www.empiresecurity.com/displayarticle97.html)
PostNuke saves all referals in a table. Our table was full with about 8500 tidbits of data. We simply launched the MySQL administration and selected "empty" o*n the Nuke_referral table. Don't select "drop" because you need the table. Selecting "empty" simply dumps all 8500 referals.

Sod you're probaly right about the DNS issue and I saw the refer.php but didn't think it was BE.. as for the loopback issue it's the same fix for the connection issue. I just couldn't remember all of the details or hunt down the excact KB number ... just some of what Paragon was saying about the Page Cannot be Displayed was the same issue that I saw on a system at work and in the event log it was talking about TCP timing out... Paragon do you have any time out messages in the event log? I looked up the error message and it point to SP2 hotfix ...

I tend to a agree that the issue is partially DNS based; but I have noticed that both of the browsers tended to time out waitng for the DNS server's reply much more quickly than ever before; also I did exactly what Urlyin suggested as well in that I removed and reinstalled the SP2 version of IE 6.0 using a little utility called IE fix. It could be that all the steps I listed in my first post (especially flushing the DNS cache) coupled with the reinstall and the hot fix gave my system the necessary kick in the buttocks that it needed.
I'm at work right now; but I'll check the event logs and reply when I get home this evening.

Here's an article on the connection issue with XP2 URL (http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497) I have seen this cause brower issues... it may also depend on the apps that are running in the back ground. Either way I glad you can surf the internet freely Paragon :D
