hi everyone

I'm the new member her, i've just registered to ask this burning question to you guys.

I've got a very cheap qtec power supply, the only problem i find is that it's a bbit on the noisy side, but apart from that it's quite reliable and I don't see what it can lack in terms of performance from the high end psu's

I'm thinking of changing the 80mm fans from inside the psu with the stealth fans, but I'm not sure if this is actually worth it, can someone with expert knowledge of psu's please help me out here.

I'm assuming the only difference between psu's is the branding, the design (cables etc), and ofcourse the fans, if thats the case then I think I'll keep my psu and just replace the fans.

You know, if the PSU is reliable, youve never had problems with it, then the modification is worth it. I'd say to go for it.

:welcome: totalwise to the BE!

Depends if you have any power hungry upgrades planned :) the nicest possible thing I can say about the Qtec PSU is that it is know for being a 'cheap' psu. If you are hapy with your current set up, and there is no reason to change anything anytime soon, then by all means mod it. Make sure you know what you're doing opening the case though, as the capacitors will hold a charge for days. Good luck1 :thumb:

Let us know how t goes if you choose to do it!

:welcome: to BE totalwise. Hope you enjoy time here. We are here to help and take you to the BleedinEdge.

As glorfy has said modding can be a tricky affair. One thing I've been meaning to post is how to discharge a PSU. One recommendation had been to unplug the PSU and then press the power on button of your system. This apparently discharges the PSU but I have not verified this with other sources. I woudl be real cautious playing inside a PSU.

Below is some information we post for new members that some have said was helpful such as The BleedinEdge Story (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/be_pagegen.php?id=about_be). When we are not tweaking our rigs or helping folks out we put our unused cycles to work the the BE Folding@Home Team Info (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1418)

If you are interested in telling us a bit about your User Name...what's it mean?? (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1319) or some info on Your System (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=5856). There is also Post Your Pets (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1766), The Computer Room Thread (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=490) and even a BE Family Photo Album (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2601&highlight=photo+album). Or maybe you would prefer to read through the Forums on BE (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/index.php?).

In the end we hope you relax, put your feet up and stay awhile.

Thanks  . I am starting to use this more regularly. Aside from giving folks a warm welcome I am hoping it gets more folks to register and others to participate a bit more.

Still wouldn't muck with a psu unless I knew exactly what will zap me and what won't  .

Errrm.....................

my handle?? well, there's not much behind it really, totalwise.com was the first domain i bought, it was the only .com domain I could buy that sounded catchy, easy to remember and was available, you try getting a decent .com domain and you'll find out how difficult it is. So I had the website up and running for a year and then the site expired and I couldn't afford the hosting. I was at school then and bought the domain and hosting using beenz.com points.

I think someone else has bought the domain now, there's no website for it either, so I'm not sure why the guy bought it.

So eventually I started using totalwise in forums and every forum I use I've had the same username so its easy to remember.

Thats pretty much the whole point of the username.

Ok I've got a custom built computer

amd xp 2800+
abit an7 mobo
512mb 400mhz 3200
xfx gforce fx 5700le
sata drives and other bits and bobs.

Anyways back to the subject matter at hand.

I am assuming you are right in how to discharge the psu, in my mobo, I got an led light thats always on and a an led display showing the computer status for troubleshooting. Also the infra-red mouse is always on too. So if I unplug the power cord and after a while these lights don't come on am I right in assuming the power has been discharged??

Would it make a difference if I were to wear some rubber gloves whilst doing this?

I've found this forum through this guide from google.
