:welcome: to "Upgradaholics Anonymous".
Recently, I posted some statements in another thread where the various comments and replies inspired the opening of a new thread, dedicated to all matters relating to this condition that affects the lives of countless souls - Upgradaholism. More commonly known by its less threatening name - "upgrading" not only affects the lives of those who have been seized upon by it's unrelenting grasp, but to various degrees takes its toll upon their friends and loved ones as well.
Feel free to come here anytime, day or night. Post your thoughts, comments, confessions, etc. We're all in it together. Most importantly, don't be ashamed - all are welcome, and come as you are.

You see - I'm building my daughters (both 8th graders) a PC for xmas, so I'm snatching upgrades for my machine and cycling out the stuff for their rig.
See how I start off - so "well intentioned"? And note how the word "upgrades" just slips in there so innocently. My, my, my - just watch how it progresses...
Finally, no more them fighting with me and my wife for the computer after that - they can do all their school work on their own (plus play SIMS2, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and websurf, .mp3 library build, burn, etc.).
My wife's a middle school teacher (w/MBA education & child developement) she teaches 8th grade History/Language Arts, and I am in school full-time so it'll be nice to get our PC back to ourselves.
...behold, the slippery slope.
But alas, I, by merciful grace, saw my true nature...
Plus - BUILDING THEM A MACHINE GIVES ME THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO UPGRADE   !!! Come on, face it - that's all I'm in it for and we all know it... "Hi, my name is Joe, and I'm an UPGRADE-a-holic..." - "HI JOE!" the crowd answers back
...and thus - the healing could begin!
Now, seeing my true self, I was ready to begin tearing down the walls - it was time to let people in...
This, sadly, is more true than not...it's really a sickness for me  :beat: .
Ever since I started tweaking 2 1/2 yrs. ago - I have always been on this front wave of things with always getting the latest thing. I mean, sh#% man, I've spent way more on my PC addiction in the last 2 1/2 years than I did in 7 years of being a pot head (and I only smoked the good stuff :yup: ), but those days are over - thankfully. I finally put down the huka about 4 years ago -and then a year and a half went by where I had no vices. Well, once the PC bug bit me it's been relentless! My New Years resolution is to quit being this way...I mean imagine what the PC $$ I spend would add up to in a 5 year college fund for my girls. Priorities, you know? I am 36 years old and still trying to grow up.
...These days, great video gaming lives on home computers, so I am addicted to that. It's like the perfect time for video games to have the rennaissance that they have been because all those 1970's through 1980's kids who were on the jones for it back then are adults now who can spend their hard earned $$'s on tweaking their home arcades (PC's) - like me. I'm the poster child for this.
See how tricky this beast can be?
It's time for me to step down now, having delivered the dedicatory speech, and let others place their feet upon the path to compassion, comradery, and most of all, healing.
Thank You!
MY NAME IS joeMan, AND I'M AN UPGRADAHOLIC.

Hi I'm Snafu and it's been 3 days since my last overclock :hide: .
It all started with dropping a chunk of change for my system, then it moved on to I need this, then I need that, and oh wouldn't that work well,... the usual story. I think within 4 months of my system I spent another third on other parts and it doesn't seem to stop.
Am I addicted yet? Should I go for help?

Hi I'm Paragon and I have no virtue when it comes to upgrading :bonk: My latest tryst is looking for the perfect case; yes perfect :mischeif: I've spent every spare moment reading reviews and talking to every pro case builder in the US searching for that elusive prize that I'm not sure exists...Everyone that has reached my short list has some little aggravating flaw that I don't want to pay for :help:
I don't overclock to speak of, I just upgrade to the fastest possible components that my bank account will afford at the time ... it's what I refer to as a passionate addiction and I spend an average of 2 hours a day just planning for the future and what my next rig will be...OMG I'm so very hooked on this it's beyond addiction

High, I’m RotorHead and I’m a binge upgrader.
I’ve been doing well for several months now. I fear, with all the new flavors of hardware out now, that I won’t be able to hold off much longer. I just have to keep telling myself….Doom 3 runs fine on a PIII….. Doom 3 runs fine on a PIII….. Doom 3 runs fine on a PIII.

 Hi Snafu, Paragon, Rotorhead, evilangel, Killer Munkey, glorfy, and flexkill.
Snafu, thank you for kicking things off...you have found all the help you need right here - bravo on taking that first step! See how you have blazed a trail for others?
Paragon, you are a man after my own heart - little to no OC'ing, but an abiding addiction for the fastest components available.
Killer Munkey - the drool, the look...yes it's all too familiar.
Thank you all for your courage. No one will judge you here.
Coffee and refreshments will be served in the foyer when we adjourn.

A lot of folks turn to me for help with such problems. The first thought that comes to my mind is for everyone to give me the computer parts that mean the most to them...that should make you feel better & less guilty...it's a win/win situation. I'm only doing this to help! :mischeif:

I think Hawk is in serious trouble with his addiction. So many machines and is still not sated  . I think I might be happy with a quarter of your rigs ;) but alas I am relagated to upgrading my rig. Will be ordering an xp120 with a panaflo fan, an xp90 and panflo fans and some rounded sata cables. I couldn't make up my mind on teh cooler so I am getting both and besdies they are all on sale. I think I am saving $20 - sounds like a deal to me :D .
On a sad note I will also be dismantling this rig for some much delayed modding for better airflow (ducts, shrouds, opening grills, etc.). Not sure how long it will be down -I hope I don't start to get the shakes halfway through. Is there a BE hotline I can call for a quick fix

If it gets too bad, you can always hit your local web cafe or public library...it's like generic beer, but when you need a quick fix, it'll do! Or, if it really gets bad, you can dial 1-800-up-grade, therapists are standing by.

Umm I have 7 computers and I use 2 of them and I'm thinking about upgrading to another A64 system (have 2 already). I work for OCZ and I just PAID! for some pc3500EB......oh god there is something wrong here. :)
Now I'm also getting a Canon 20D though I really have no need for it and it seems every day the buy gets more and more expensive. Go from the 18-55MM lense to the 17-85MM IS USM lense.....1GB mem card to the 2GB card...add battery grip.......filters.....speedlight.......now I'm thinking about the Canon 70-200MM IS USM telephoto as well........when will it stop........... :D

i second the motion by paragon. steve, we'd like to see your avatars friends :D
Well i think i'm some what of a success story, i still drool over faster parts most often its a better g card or ram. But i've convienced myself i'm content with what i got after i get my WC setup running on my cpu and graphics. Once thats setup i'm pretty sure i'd be able to OC far enough to put of any itch of upgrading for 6 months.
So to all you upgrade aholics it is possible to win out over your addiction! Fight on :thumb: :thumb:

Breaking down seems to be the latest catch phrase in this thread.
I broke down and ordered an xp120, xp90 with a panaflo 92mm fan, rounded sata cables (red UV to match the others) and a new board - either as a back-up or for another rig - haven't yet decided (if the later then I need everything else for a new system).

Speaking of breaking down...
Remember, there was that Seinfeld episode where Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer had a contest of who could remain "master of their domain" the longest? One by one, they all broke down...

I have found a remedy to the disease called upgrading. ;)
It's spending $12,200 on a truck while you're a college student, and having to pay it back. Then sell all of your computer parts and buy something faster than what you used to have, and make it something harder to upgrade, such as a Shuttle.
Although, I'm still working on buying a LCD. I had the money for it, but I was laid off from work for a while (It usually gets slow where I work during the holiday season), and had to put the money towards a truck payment.

The Mrs. does not know about the ram (yet). She is usually pretty good about this stuff though. Her biggest complaint are the extra computers I am starting to collect. I have to dissect and store the parts somewhere out of site.

Hi my name's Christophe, and i'm an Upgradaholic.
I got my first job about 3 years ago, and the first thing I did was build myself a brand new system. Since then i've spent every last dollar that i've not forced myself to save on my hardware addiction.
I've upgraded from an AXP 2200+ TbredA to a 2100 TbredB, to a 2500 Barton, to a 2.6C, then to a 3.0E, and now a winchester 3200 and a new 3.0E. And that's just my CPUs. Then there's my shuttle... and i'm sure I could go on for hours more, but I won't.
It's a lonely hobby sometimes.. spending hours fine tuning and tweaking... only to find another bottleneck to fix... more new components to spend money on... At least i've forced myself to save money (Automatic transactions).
*sigh* :( Saddest thing is that it's all too true. I need help, and i'm only just turning 18.

Lol it seems like a week doesn't go by without an upgrade. First I went and ordered an AMD 4000+ today overnight of course. I wanted to go FX but I am going to wait for the 57. My 3500+ seems to stop @ 2.8 so I wanna see what the 1M L2 will do for me. While looking through the sale stuff I found this (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=30-109-113&depa=0) it looked like fun so I had to add one also. :D

I, umm, made a purchase last week. See sig for details about my new Dell Inspiron 6000.
Well, technically mom ordered it. I used her CC. Most of the cost will be covered by the parental units as it's my gift for graduation and because I'm required to have a laptop for school next year.
We were originally going to buy it sometime this summer, watching for deals. However, last week Dell had a coupon for $750 off laptops $1499 or more, limited to the first 10,000 people. This was the first round. They've had a similar/same deal a couple times in the last 2 weeks now.
So, the 6000 I speced out was $1801. I went a little above what I needed for school. I definately wanted widescreen and the 700m was too small at only 12.1" and the 9300 would probably be too big plus it cost too much. So, the 6000 was the happy middle of the road, perfect choice for me.
Total cost: $1051 after coupon. $1114.06 after taxes. Without the coupon, the laptop (as speced) would have been about $2000 all said and done. The plan was for me to buy a laptop in the $1500-$1600 range. But, because of this deal, I got to get something a little better.
Now, the unfortunate part. I'm stuck in the middle of a geek tragedy (pun on Greek tragedy intended). Since it was ordered with mom's CC, it was shipped home. It got to my house on Tuesday. Mom won't ship it to me, because it would cost too much to ship and by the time I got it, I'd be home within a couple weeks. So, now I have to wait until May 15th, when I get home, to get it.

I went with the upgraded battery. 9 cell instead of 6 cell. Battery life, it's something that I'd say is important for me, so I went with the better battery. (Yes, I went with a more of a power hungry laptop when battery life is important. I'm a geek, a computer enthusiast, who does more than check his e-mail and write papers.) If I find out that the 9 cell battery doesn't provide me with enough battery time, then I'll buy an additional battery. I'll be in class from about 7am to noon, but will not need the laptop on the entire time, and in some classes, I'll be able to plug it in.
As for weight, it probably won't bother me. It'll spend the day going to classes with me, in a bag with books, and most of the rest of the time on my desk, next to my desktop system.
Since the classrooms are on a wireless network, my friend and I were joking around the other day about playing UT or CS or something against each other while in class, even if we're in different classes at the time.

I throw away the floppy and put the second battery in the floppy slot, you'll get about 4 to 5 hours this way. If it was me, I'd do it again -- get a car cig lighter charger also..

If gaming rig, why the choice of xeon? Not trying to bash Intel here :hide: , just trying to compute this configuration....
Ya, no problem. This rig will be used for a myriad of different things, for now just the ordinary day to day tasks, a few games, and multimedia stuff. In the future if all goes as planned, then I will add computer aided design, and will probably be hooked up to a bench top milling machine. The ECC RAM is required by the motherboard and lends a tad bit of stability. My current PIII system is using ECC RAM and is probably the most stable computer in the house. I've not had a BSOD or had to reload the OS (XP Pro) for over two years.
Why Intel? Well I did look into a dual core dual opteron setup but that would have added $1600 just for the processors to the total price. The price to performance ratio was just not worth it.
And last but not least, I've always owned strange setups. Ya, I know I could have gone several different routes, but what I've picked out should do the job nicely.

Oh, CAD and milling machine....umm.....I can already see meself with one off those, and with the patience and talent I got. I'd design a GPU waterblock, process and mill it, and off course end up with an 18 pounds copper block as a counter balancing weight for my Tractor !
ECC = stability, well got to admit that my dually compaq server as you refresh my memory is darn stable, actually forgot I had that running somewhere in the house, maybe I should go check and say hello to it, must fell lonely where ever it is.

I would for a start suggest, putting your wonderfull rig and it's ability to perform on some constructive tasks.
As such, why not buy some lottery tickets, but only after the rig as done the computational analysis and provided the most likely winning number. Buy the lottery ticket, cash in on the money and:
Go buy 2 more raptors, a triple pump water cooling setup for the gpu, a cascade for the cpu, upgrade the motherboard to SLIX16, and since the mobe got to come out replace the 3700 with an FX 57, a 7 for a 7?
Lastly do listen to Dr. BB_One, Hummer versus Ninja 900cc, Hummer will always win! So stear clear of Hummers and the likes if you plan on enjoying the piece parts mentionned above. :deviltail

LMAO I like your style - The PC WILL be Raided (I've planned it - surely it would do my therapy more harm than good if I didnt go through with my plans?...) and it WILL have the extra side 120mm fan (heat has almost become an issue).
I was offered the FX57 last month, I managed to dodge that bullett... but only through fear of the girlfriend witholding privilages... Unfortunately it looks like I will no longer have a girlfriend... Hello FX57?
Then 2gb Ram me...
Then X-Fi Fatal1ty me...
My god - someone tie me down.
And so what you're saying is, when the time comes me and the 900cc be able to dodge hummers? (No, what i'm saying is - when the time comes, you won't have to) MatriX me.

Now raf this isn't your first encounter with a vehicle of the large kind is it my good man. Many a story your have told in days gone by or your poor old battered and bruised Ninja from the huddled masses of the good town called London when they are out and about in their own transportation ignoring the rule of the road and not using mirror or indicator before turning into your line of travel. Many a time have you bore..... i mean intrigued me with your tales
Oh and it is a beast of a system you have there, I should know, i've sorted it for you enough times. lol, you do the modding, i provided the support, we actually works quite well like that.

Ya, I hear ya on the poswer supply. I am intrigued by it though, and out of the 4 reviews I read, none complained of a problem with the 5V supply. The only complaint I heard was with the fan noise as it spins at 3400RPM. They said not annoying, but audible.
PNY offers an extended 2 years on top of the inital 1 year if you register the cards by sn# through their website, so that's nice.
Ordered a 520w Powerstream this evening to replace my 485w enermax that i thought was failing, it probably isn't, but hey i get a new PSU :)

Should I feel guilty for using used parts in my son's Christmas present computer? :hide:

It is a problem if:
You lie to cover your tracks.
You can only afford Top Ramen for dinner, but your running an X2 and SLI configuration and can't wait to finish eating so you can get back to your favorite game.
You say your running to the store for a couple things (milk, bread, etc.) and end up speeding across town to Fry's for 2 Gigs of PC4000.
There are more signs to look for...but these are good for starters.

It all started when I bought my DFI nf2 board about 1.5 years ago.. But it seems to be getting worse now since I started with a64 stuff.. I dont know if I can control myself anymore.. Once I get the urge or even think about buying something new its just a matter of time before I cave in and buy it..
Ram.... I have two computers now why the heck do I need 6-7gig's of assorted ram ? I cant use them all at once..
I have 3x 939 cpus that I will oc with each set of ram I have.. Once thats done I feel lost and bored with nothing to do.. This is when I start looking for more hardware.... :smash:
Ive had my x2 3800 for less than a month and I already have my eyes on a dual core opteron..

I found a way to feed my addiction :mischeif:
My wife has been taking photos with the digital camera and has been wanting to edit and print them out herself. So for xmas I gave her a nice printer. Trouble is she doesn't have a decent computer to use.
So I came to her aid and offered to build another system (something I've been meaning to do anyways but let's not tell her). She agrees and out I go and pick-up/order:
Intel M70
Asus CT479
WD Caviar 400GB 16mb cache
WD Caviar 80GB 8mg cache*
NEC 3550A DVD-/+RW (x2)*
LG x16 DVD-ROM (x2)*
FDD (x2)*
Thermaltake Armor case
Razer mouse
OCZ Powerstream 520w (x2)*
*) needed extra for a project I am working on
So in the end a gift of a $200 printer has fed my addiction for a few more months.

:yikes: Well, I am staring in total amazement at my new monitor. 30" Apple Cinema Display...whoooweeeee. Man, I reeeally slipped off the wagon that time. But, aaaahhhhh it hurts so good.
World of Warcraft at 2560x1600 with my one good remaining 7800GTX pushing it - everything cranked and giving 30-40FPS at all times. The view distance in-game is crazy crazy far...seriously.
Photoshop is a dream on this thing with so much room to have everything open and easily accesible with no stacking, and the contrast and clarity is astounding. I haven't loaded Premiere yet, but the timeline is going to be nice and wide for sure.
Ya, Apple dropped price to $1999 and I got an open box from Fry's for an extra 5% so mine was $1899. It carries the full warranty of course, and I laid down an extra $79 for an additional 3 years full replacement warranty from Fry's with same or equivalent product if this one bails on me. Heck yes. Somebody had purchased this one and brought it back a day later, apparently their vid card couldn't push the dual-link requirement for the full 2560x1600 glory.

Well, since I am the one who started this thread I may as well take a little solace in the fact that I can lead in the illness.
I have to confess that since I got the 30" Apple WS I have been thinking seriously about grabbing two 7900GTX's. Fry's has a fresh batch in at $449/ea. so after I read Gaspars post that he got one, it was enough to push my compulsive button and I went out and bought two of them. I have seriuosly backslid into tmy upghradaholism agasin. See, I am even slurring. I have the shakes even as I type this...I am readying to install the new cards...as well as a new Thermaltake 750W toughpower PS.
Oh well...it's like this bumper sticker I used to have on the front head of my kick drum when I was in a rock band and partook of more sordid bad habits now bygone. It showed this 50's style, Ward Cleaver type clean-cut guy hitting up a little toke of wacky weed from a pipe and the caption said, "Hey...at least it's not crack".

Some of my latest expolits:
LSI 150-4D MegaRAID Controller
4 Seagate 160GB SATA/300
2 Seagate 300GB SATA/300
2 eVGA 7950GT KO
Samsung CLP-600N Color Laser Printer
I now officially have 2 PC's all to my greedy self. A server that is in the perpetual "I'm building a server..." phase, and an AM2 main rig. I have killer rig & good games, but all I do is work or tweak my server now. I rarely play games anymore. I build stuff, turn it on, and then just sit there and look at it run while I drink coffee.
Some mornings I wake up face down on my workstation desk behind the wall of monitors with empty hardware boxes and Fry's Electronics bags laying around me, and my PDA vibrating & beeping with text messages that my clients terminal server needs help, he can't print to Acrobat Distiller anymore, Goldmine won't print memo.rtf out to the OmniRush FaxRush server, and they have an AVG "you have been infected" message that won't go away...just another day in the life of joeMan. (okay that's a little exagurated...but based on a true story!)
But despite the ups and downs, I LOVE IT

Okay, so I am an AMD nut and have been for years. I usually start off with building a computer that is going to last most people 5 years before replacing, yes not upgrading. However, this time around I want some opinions and to prevent from doing complete system redo's. I want to build an upgradeable system.
Here is what I have so far:
ASUS Crosshair
Here's the continued plan:
OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 Platinum SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel (4 Gigs worth)
OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply
eVGA 01G-P2-N592-AX GeForce 7950GX2 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 (2 of these)
WD Raptor 10,000 RPM 150Gb Sata (4 of these)
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 2.8Ghz
Zalman CNPS 9500 AM2 for cooling chip
Now I am looking for opinions and if you think there might be something else in placement of what I have for better performance or more stability. I am not a real big overclocker, unless guided as to what to do. I do play many games, and do lots of video editing. I also do lots of video compression and sound production. So I want to be able to utilize the system as one task is going on with another. I want to play WOW while compressing four hours of DVD and see or feel no hiccups. I am all ears as to what you have to say or suggest. One thing I am stuck on, is which case I should get for this to fit neatly and cool nicely. Also, I haven't dabbled into any watercooling as of yet, will I need to?
Thanks for your responses!

Well, this "should" be my last entry here for a while... I just bought a house to hold my computer upgrades. :suspect: My last upgrade(s) were, an opty 175, an fx55 sandy with the free 250 gb Barracuda, an opty 146 that I got to 3G... a couple of 36 gig Raptors... an 80 gig Caviar, the OCZ GamerXtreme fell through, so I got a BFG 650 (HAD to have it RIGHT then...), and a DFI Venus. :D It was sold as an ES since there was no box and no serial number. :shhh:
I also have gotten into building a laser projector lately and almost have all the parts. Waiting on a DAC from down under and I'll be able to make my own show.
So, if all goes well I will NOT be posting in HERE for a while... :hide:

Audigy4 to replace a 5.1 Digital in one of my rigs. Why? Because it was on sale. Did I need it? No. Is it going to improve my quality of life? Hardly. Is there other things that money would have been better spent on? You know it! Will I be wasteful in this PC addiction related illness again? ASAP!!!!!!

Way to go JL!! Keppin the dream alive I see...excellent.
Well, this is my upgradaholic who resisted temptation post, because tonight at Fry's I saw (and yes my eyes popped out of my head :yikes: ) eVGA 8800GTS ($499) -AND- eVGA 8800GTX ($649) on the shelf...good lord allmighty. But then I perused the motherboard section and no 6xx series mobos in sight...nary. Oh ya, worth mentioning - ATI 1950XTX's on sale $449 in-store price. Another noteworthy find at Fry's here in Sacramento - yes OCZ 600W PS...first OCZ power supplies I've seen on Fry's shelves, in Sactown anyway...yay. And also, I saw a PCP&C 1KW PS too...whoooweeee. And to think I walked outa there ahead, I returned a bunch of stuff tonight - and I didn't buy anything.
Outside was a lineup of tents and lawn chairs, sleeping bags...people waiting for the PS3 tomorrow morning first thing. They had some PS3 pack for just under $1000 going on. The girl inside said only 32 units in stock so everybody 33 on back is SOL for launch day anyway. Hope they enjoyed the parking lot ambience...LOL

With the price drops on the 939 hardware...I picked up a 3800 X2 (I know - I should have/could have - done better) a 500 GB drive for data storage, another 1GB of memory, and a 500GB external drive for the PS2... I'm such a geek!
All this for the kids and the wife. I know that I did it so they would be too upset with me for getting the quad-core....and that they would leave my computer alone..:o
A friend of mine asked me what I do with all the computer parts that I replace...and before I could answer, another one of my co-workers stated "Nothing!! He doesn't get rid of anything...he just builds more computers! He's got more then he knows what to do with." :o :o
It's true, I have to admit. I'll take down one system and build two more out of it, and a year later take those two, re-build the original, and then re-build those two systems, while I assemble a brand new one. :bonk:
Whats wrong with me? Is there a cure? A 12 step program with others just like me to offer support? Is this the place??
