This is a guide to setup Unreal Tournament for high res textures using an OpenGL renderer.

UT came with an extra CD that was meant for use with S3 graphic cards running MeTal. This CD contains high res textures that make the game look much better than the standard res graphics using S3TC. There have been several OpenGL renderers that can be used to take advantage of the increased graphics quality on non S3 cards. I've used it with nVidia and ATi cards with very good success. The latest one is available HERE (http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/) (thanks for the link Kingfish).

To set it up, follow the steps below.

1) Be sure your UT install is patched to version 436
2) Install the high res textures off UT CD #2. If you dont have it, there is no point going any further
3) Unzip and install the OpenGLDrv.dll file in the \UnrealTournament\System directory (rename old one)
4) Modify your UnrealTournament.ini file to look like this: These are my tweaked settings, they may not be optimal for your setup.

Use this if you have an nVidia GForce/2/3/4 card. This forces DXTC1 calls to DXTC3. nVidia had a bad DXTC1 implementation that made certain texturs look ugly. This is the same as the "Ugly Quake3 sky" issue if you are familiar with it.

Oldfart, Nice graphics. Really like the improved textures. Even adds more eye candy to the opengl driver. Like some of the past games I've had, that use customized textures, someone always finds a workaround to use those on other graphics gards. Nice work and thanks for posting this information. Gonna share it with my Son who will like it too.

Something I have found out awhile back too in case your not aware of it. If you have a higher end sound card you can change the output rate and effects channels to give you a higher quality sound and more channels of sounds your missing with only 16, by changing these two parameters:

[Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem]
UseDirectSound=True
UseFilter=True
UseSurround=False
UseStereo=True
UseCDMusic=False
UseDigitalMusic=True
UseSpatial=False
UseReverb=True
Use3dHardware=True
LowSoundQuality=False
ReverseStereo=False
Latency=40
OutputRate=44100Hz <----- HERE
EffectsChannels=32 <----- HERE
DopplerSpeed=9000.000000
MusicVolume=160
SoundVolume=192
AmbientFactor=0.700000

Good tweaks on the sound! I forgot about those ones.

Nice info. Any particular Cats stand out with this enhancement?

I haven't run any benches to compare versions, but they all seem to work fine. I'm using 3.6.

What the heck...some benches comparing D3D and OpenGL

UTBench benchmarks.

1280 x 1024 | 4X AA, 16X AF | OpenGL as above, D3D max detail configuration, sound on

D3D:
Min 41.18; max 105.25; ave 76.56

OpenGL:
Min: 51.38; max 116.86; ave 84.02

Not only do you get better graphic detail, but faster performance as well. That is a rare combo!

i dont play UT anymore ~ but i know an awesome post when i see one ;)

excellent job :beer:

You can definitly see a diference there.:)

the Open_GL is definately much nicer, and faster.

ive always preferrred OGL over D3D, given a choice.

I agree. OpenGL always seems so much "smoother" somehow compared to D3D. The Quake/1/2/3, Serious Sam, UT OGL are all good examples.

Wish someone could do that all for SOF2!!

after installing disc2 high res textures, i changed all my lines to what you showed in this thread (and duh i got rid of the arrows and extra comments you made, and made sure the resolution was what i had it) and when I opened ut, I couldnt move my mouse. I have an optical mouse. Any ideas?

Did you also install the OpenGL renderer?

What video card are you running?

Like he said, the opengl renderer needs to be installed. Besides that, I can only think that you may need to update your drivers for the mouse.

a friend of mine did all this stuff along time ago, and made regular UT installers for his MODs. Alot of people have copied it. He calls it "Eye Candy" and it can be found towards the middle of the page on this link...
