View Full Version : RAM Usage vs Page File Usage

Have 2x512 RAM sticks in this machine. With just a few programs loaded, I have say 200mb of RAM being utilized (about 800mb free) and 95mb written to the Page File.

Why would anything have been written to the Page File when so much RAM is still available?

Thanks..............

cause windows conciders whatever is in the swap file to be rather useless ~ leaving the ram open for something else.

So.....what are the pro's and con's of getting rid of the page file entirely, forcing eveything into RAM?

Thanks......

Thanks...... just leave windows to manage the page file.. not much to be gained by turning it off or fixing the size

what OS are you using?

removing the swap file forces everything to run from RAM ~ but it also hogs up your ram and makes apps run slower (cause useless stuff is taking up space)

XP Home.

Was thinking that with only 18% RAM utilization, and 1 gb total, would stuff run faster if all was forced into RAM. Or are we talking micro-wheatie flake gains here?

XP's core is designed to use the pagefile... Getting rid of it will seriously screw up your OS and could lead to data corruption.

I have 2 sticks of 512MB in my rig myself and I also look at 600MB free most of the time and am wondering why I even got that 2nd stick...

I know why... because virtual machines (vmware) run much smoother with 1gb of RAM!! ;)

Clears that up. Thanks to all.

I'm so jealous-you have vmware! :D

I use 1 Gig on each of machines but I can easily drop down to 200-400 Meg free. In Linux, I normally see all the memory used up and close to 200 Meg in the swap file.

I guess it depends on the work you do with your system. Video editing must take up a lot.. CAD/CAM same story...

pointreyes: JK! ;)

The company I work for has VMware and I am evaluating it... :D

Yeah, I know you were joking. I love finding uses for the nana smilie. :D Since I can't afford VMWare I will just stick with my four 'puters with a total of 4.256 Gig of RAM and 680 Gig of storage. With just 64 meg more on my four video cards and I would have as much RAM as most people think is a lot on a computer.

I know that I don't have as nearly as much as eva2000 (or is that eva4000? :p ;) ) but it is ok for my needs.
