I want to put something together for the kids ;) and I was wondering if anyone has done it or has any suggestions about materials or building methods. I want to build one that looks good and is comfortable but doesn't cost too much. I have the wheel and pedals - I need the frame and seat. I can get a plastic race seat and padded cover from summitracing.com for about $65. An actual car seat from a junkyard is a possibility too though car seats are normally pretty heavy. I'm going to go to a local metal shop that sells stock and see what kind of prices I can get on square steel tube. Lowe's has it but the cost per foot is too high.
Anyway, the design I like the most for its simplicity:

And another design, I got this pic from a review I read here:

I actually bought one of those at Frys electronics here in Atlanta and Im quite pleased by it. As far as building one yourself, Id say to stick with the kind of layout that you see in the pic you attached. What kind of steering wheel and pedals do you have?

Do you have a pic of the one you bought? Is it still available at Fry's?
I got the Logitech Momo, even after I read all the reviews about paddle shifter problems and all the rest... $40 after rebate wasn't too bad though so I'll give it a shot. Once I get my wife hooked on it I'll get a better one after it breaks :mischeif:

Sadly I have no digital camera so I cant get pics, but I assure you thats its a very good product. I still want that 2 1/2 turn steering wheel though, that just seems awesome.
