View Full Version : JRE Java Runtime Environment related BSOD today...

Has anyone experienced problems at all with JRE running on your Windows XP? I have, it always happens when I browsing and try to do something JRE related, the IE screen looks real funky, stutters a bit, then I end up having to close browser and restart IE to browse again. I usually steer clear of things that require the applets to start (Like when I go to SpeedTest website, the speed check program starts in an applet. If I run it (Speedtest website) the applet flshes onscreen for a brief secnd, then disappears, also Java Ctrl Panel will launch, but the screen just sits there grayed out - no text on it.

Well, it's never crashed me - until today, tried to run JRE and BOOM - BSOD

STOP: 0x0888888E (0xC0000005, 0xBFACC2E2, 0xAD1297EC, 0x00000000)
then referenced below this on the BSOD was:
ati3duag.dll Address BFACC2e2 base at BFA49000, Datestamp 417efabe.

Rebooted and everythings fine since. Ran all my cleanup routine, spyware programs and went to Symantec and did a Virus Check while we mowed down the Thanksgiving feast. No Viruses found. Chkdsk was being stubborn though, when I tried to run it it would say "Chkdsk has been cancelled" - Ha! B.S. No one cancelled it, it just did it by itself, so I finally had to run it from CMD Console, then it checked me out and says everything's okay.

This is not a crisis - but more of an annoyance that JRE has never seemed to run correctly - not always was it like this, but probably this behavior started a few months ago (maybe SP2 related?) The reference to the ATI driver is weird too. ATI website said to revert back to CAT 4.10's for a possible fix to JRE related errors, and also that it may occur when AA is activated in ATI Ctrl Panel. ha! no thanks man, I'm stickin with 4.11's and moving to 4.12's a.s.a. they appear...

Anyone else have these type of JRE issues? Solutions?

This is a rule that I discovered with ATi and JRE from many, many years ago and it still seems to hold true.

Never use a version of Java that does not have an underscore.

Version 1.4.0 with an ATi will cause a browser to crash.
Version 1.4.1_b05 - no crashes.

Hopefully if your JRE version is without an underscore then the problem is to simply upgrade to the latest JRE version with an underscore.

:p Amazingly enough, I'm not joking. :)

Whoops, it's not the underscore-I just use that for simplicity. I simply stay away from the early releases of each major Java SDK release (which JRE would normally follow the same version schema). That post on rage3d was from 2/2003 and yet things like this still surface with ATi? I like ATi but stuff like this prevents me from saying that ATi drivers are improving. :(

Thank you pointreyes.

I have uninstalled the last version JRE and have the installer for the latest version sitting on my desktop now...I just haven't loaded it yet. I'll give it a try when I feel in the mood again. After having run completely stable for months on end, that BSOD kind of pi#@ed me off, so I'm trying to recompose myself to the JRE scene right now.
