The asus a8v deluxe says it only supports up to ddr400. .. but in effect could you take a ddr500 stick and throw it in.. and then OC the fsb speed to that effective clock frequency?

Yes, you could. What ASUS is stating with that specification is that the mobo has been tested to support an FSB of 200 Mhz.

You could technically speaking, put DDR 400 sticks and increase your FSB until the memory stick won't lead anymore gain, from either relaxing the timing or increasing the voltage of the memory. In short it is not imposible to reach DDR 500 (250Mhz) with DDR400 rated memory, it depends on the quality of the memory stick mainly, assuming the mobo and cpu can do 250 FSB. If you put in , DDR500 memory stick you will probaly have less tweaking to do to reach 250Mhz on the memory side, but still need to understand that you have to be able to reach an FSB of 250. If you were to leave that FSB at 200, your DDR 500 would operate as DDR400.

As it pertains to reaching higher FSB settings, mileage varies from mobo to mobo and setup to setup, hence why in ocing, it is always said that YOUR mileage may vary. Someone with the exact same config as u, may get more then you...happens.

Hope this helps.
