Finally. If anyone is interested :D
The subject material was a vhs camcorder tape of the band Mikki and I were in - playing a wedding. This material lent itself well to making the chapters (each song). I captured each logical segment as a different capture file, Set 1, Set2, Teardown. There was also another segment of the bride's Dad, doing the "what do scotsman wear under their kilts" bit, but I had to cut it because of length.
I used iuvcr to capture from my leadtek winfast 2000XP Deluxe (cheapie I know) as this program was the only one I could find that would allow me to capture at full DVD resolution of 720x480 (NTSC) - I tried a bunch of others, and none worked at this resolution.
I used TMPenc to encode the avi to mpg2. Set 2 turned out better for some reason.
The biggest pain in the neck of the whole thing was the slideshow in the "extras" portion of the disk which I made from a bunch of digital stills. I tried a bunch of programs again, including ProShow Gold which subzero suggested here. (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php3?postid=5310#post5310) I must admit that this program was excellent except for one sort of large problem. When I would save the resulting slideshow file as an mpg2 so I could import it into ulead dvd workshop, the soundtrack in the mpg was about half volume compared to what it was when actually working on it in proshow. I checked all the volume sliders in the program and all were at 100%. Needless to say this would have made the slideshow about half the volume of the rest of the DVD which just won't do. Belatedly, I realize that you can select an alternate sound file to go with a video file in dvd workshop, so I did that, picking the same sound file as I used originally so the pics and sound would still be in sync.
The other goofy problem I had was with the slideshow again, I set the option in dvd workshop to "return to previous menu" for all clips in the project - but the slideshow just wants to start over again, I don't know why. You have to use the remote to get back to the menu, small thing, but irritating.
Thanks to Duvie for the tips and links. All in all, a satisfying project. Now on to the baby home videos....:-)
