Greetings To All,
I have been wanting an LCD Monitor since they first began to mature about a year ago. The only thing keeping me from it was how terribly some of them ghosted in games. I'm not a huge gamer but I like to play a good FPS. With Half Life 2 on the horizon and Doom 3 coming "when it's completed":p I don't want to make a mistake.
There are a couple of good 17" monitors with 16ms response times out there. My concern is are they big enough and will I still notice a big difference between them and my Samsung 900NF 19" CRT. What do you guys think?
The two I'm looking at are the Viewsonic VP171 and the Samsung 172T. Any and all comments will be welcomed. TIA!!!

I got the NEC/Mitsu 1760NX. The NEC, Viewsonic and Hitachi CML174 all use the same AU Optronics LCD panel. I'm very happy with it. No ghosting, it's razor sharp and it is much easier on the eyes compared to a CRT.

Thanks old fart,
I forgot to mention that fact that prolonged use of my crt, even at high refresh rates gives me a headache, so your information about and LCD being easier on your eyes is really a plus. I had read that in reviews, but wanted to hear it from a real world user.

i have a samsung 152T and some users at OCAU have samsung 172T and are pleased.. samsung make the best quality lcd monitors around
but all samsung current lcd are 25ms response time apart from their 40-50" LCD monitors :)
Viewsonic's rating specs for lcd such as contrast and brightness seems higher but from reviews compared against other brands like samsung, the visual comparison and review conclusions are viewsonic is rating their lcd higher than real, or samsung has better visual quality/contrast and bright nesss at a lower spec than Viewsonic's higher ones
of course this is what i read and haven't experienced for myself
stick with samsung for quality.. what ever you do stay away from Acer AL732 due to it's dvi connection flaw

Thanks eva2000,
The only place I can find the Mitsubishi listed for sale is in Australia, I guess it's either not made it to the states yet or maybe that model is not being sold here. I'm sold on Samsung's quality, my 900NF is just as good today as it was the day I bought it almost three years ago.
I have been kinda waiting on the Samsung 192T to finally be released here in the states, I hope it's as good as I've heard. I also read some great reports on the Viewsonic VP171, 181, and 191B models. Aren't choices wonderful?:D
I read a thread over at Ars Technica that's 84 pages long on LCD's and those guys are nuts many of them have tried every LCD out there for 10-12 days and if they don't like it it gets sent back. Hell some of them have been through 8-10 monitors looking for that elusive perfect screen:eek:

I like my ViewSonic VP171b. :)
http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcd_vp171b.htm
I have a 19" NEC at work, I have no problem using the 17" at home. It's more brillant and has more features than the 19" at work which makes it a much more enjoyable monitor to use.
I love my Planar. (http://www.planar.com/monitors/PL191M.asp)

PR I have looked very closely at the VP171B and think it's an absolutely teriffic monitor in its class, I just want something a tad bigger either a 19" or 21" there has been some talk over at Arstechnica about an LG based LCD that is 19" that has a response time of 16ms that will be released in the US shortly.
PF, I love the Planar warranty and from what I here they have an absolutely beautiful picture...Do you play games with yours? If so how is the ghosting? I don't play all the time, but I enjoy a good FPS and with Half Life II, Max Payne 2, and Doom III coming sometime I want a monitor that will be able to handle these.

BTW Dell currently is selling the Planar PX171M which retails for $529 for $411.75 which is a 25% discount and you can add any stackable coupons to this discount that you might have...That's a killer price, I'm just afraid of losing real estate, I currently have a Samsung 900NFwhich is 19"...and yes I realize we're only talking about approximaely 1" difference, but I actually want a 19 or 21.

Well PR I took your advice and bought the Viewsonic, I found a teriffic deal on line at Dell, I got the monitor shipped (3-5 days) for $442.00:eek:
I also ordered a P4C800-E MB and 1 Gig of Mushkin PC3500 Level II Black memory which will be here tomorrow:cool:

Great deal. That's $50 less than I paid for mine. Hopefully sometime next year there will be 19" LCDs that match the quality of the 16ms LCD screens but until then I much prefer having the quality I have. :)
Congrats on getting a very good monitor. :)

Thanks my friend, I really appreciate the advice and I'm with you...I'll wait a year until the technlogy progresses and I/we can get a larger monitor with better response times:wave: :yummy:

As of tomorrow I will be the owner of two duallies-so I guess that means I should be an owner to dual monitors. :D
Nice pickup Paragon , you'll enjoy that mobo and I wouldn't own a CRT anymore. LCDs definately rule. I think I asked Eva this question, on the Viewsonic is 16ms the rise and fall time or just rise? For instance, my Planar is 15ms rise and 10ms fall. I notice no ghosting issues. It's a little confusig when they don't list the rise/fall time seperately.
Size wise isn't a 17" LCD comparable to an 18" CRT anyway? Plus you gain all that desk space. Enjoy!

Thanks PF:cool:
The rise time is 12ms and the fall time is 4ms for a total of 16ms response time...I'm looking so forward to giving my eyes a break I understand there is much less eye strain with an LCD

Heya Guys:wave:
This is my first foray into LCD Monitors. My Wife bought me a Microtek 815c 18" LCD Monitor. I was really sceptical as the specs were not all that hot.
I can't find any reviews on this thing and even Microtek's own Web Site don't list this model.
I ran 3dmark 2001 and did not see any blurriness or ghosting at all. The fastest game I have is Descent3, and same thing, no blurry or ghosting. I was wondering about that as the response period is 30ms. and no DVI.
In the non-native resolution, the text and graphics is glearer than my Month old Hitachi 19" monitor.
For a cheap LCD ($427US at wally world) I'm pretty impressed. I know that the Samsung, Viewsonic and the rest are probably alot better, but this is my first LCD and it blows away any crt I have owned, that said, I might be comparing it to some crappy CRTs, but this Microtek out guns my Hitachi too.
