Are you installing the OS onto this 160gb drive? or is the drive a second/spare drive in the system.

Sounds like you may be installing onto the drive, and unless the CD has SP1 in it when you install, you wont be able to partition the drive into 1 big one.

give some details on whats going on and we can help !

That is strange as I was able to use Max3 to create a single 200GB drive with 3 partitions. 1 40GB for OS, 1 40GB for applications, 1 120GB for temporary work space.

Did you use the defaults for Max3? It might have defaulted to the less capable OS's/

Maybe this will help:

This article describes the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA) support for ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) disk drives that can increase the capacity of your hard disk to more than the current 137 gigabyte (GB) limit.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013

Let us know how u make out and if this fixed the problem.

 I tried the link info you gave me and the atapi version i have is 5.1.2600.2180 which is not the one it says you need in the article. so i followed the directions to get the update and when i download it i got a message saying i had already installed a newer version. which i am guessing came with sp2?. any thoughts :beat:

In the link I provided, they also mention info/suggestions about registry settings have u verify in your registry if those settings are the same. Pay special attention to the LBA registry key.

As usual be very carefull when u edit your registry, if you have to edit it.
Maxblast, sorry I don't use it so others will have to guide you on that.

We are not going to take any risks and before you follow the procedure stated below, you must perform a Registry BackUp and make yourself familiar with a restore in case something goes wrong.

Go here, read and follow instruction and do a registry backup.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322756&Product=winxp

Bookmark that page or print it in case you need to restore the registry.

Once this is done follow these steps:

----------
Go to Start ...RUN..a command box will show...type "regedit" without the "".

A large split screen will open go to way at the top in the left window...and find a directory call

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" click on it and then find the sub directory call "System" click on it and find "CurrentControlSet" click on it and find "Services" click on it and find "Atapi" click on it and find "Parameters" click on it.

Once in parameters folder , look at the window on the right side and u should see an entry that say's "EnableBigLba" with a value of 0 (0=numerol zero not the letter o) or 1.

If it is set at "0" then u do not have support for 137meg +, click on "EnableBigLba" and right click mouse a box will open , select modify and change the 0 value to 1 and click OK. If all this is done, skip the following paragraph go to the paragraph after it explaining how to get out of there, "When done ..bla..bla..bla."

------------------
It is possible that EnableBigLba, is not showned in the parameters section, in that case you will have to enter that entry manually.

To do so, making sure that you are in the parameters folder, place mouse over the right window anywhere on that window except an existing entry and right click.
You will get NEW, select DWORD, a box will open type in the following and make sure to preserve case format , capital letters is important :

"EnableBigLba" with out the "", when done click in the right window again, you will now see that entry in the parameter folder. Click on that entry and right click and modify the 0 value to 1, click OK.

-----------------------

When done , close the entire regedit window by going to top left corner Registry and Exit.

The short way for futur reference, or if you prefer the registry path is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters\

:stop: NOW BE EXTREMELY CAREFULL, REGEDIT DOES NOT ASK TO SAVE...WHEN U EXIT IT AUTOMATICALLY SAVES THE CHANGES!!!
SAME THING WILL HAPPEN IF U JUST CLOSE THE WINDOW. WARNING!!

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE AND TAKE YOUR TIME.

IF YOU MAKE A TYPO DELETE THE ENTRY AND RE-DO IT. :stop:

Once you have made that change. Reboot and you should have > then 137 meg support.
