View Full Version : Which dually boards can handle PC3500?

It appears that I might have sold my ASuS A7N8x System. So, I'm now trying to figure out if with the remaining hardware if I can build another dually. I will also be posting this in the Intel forum because I'm talking dually not Intel or AMD brand specific. I have two sticks of Corsair PC3500 512Meg each. However, I also can move those sticks back to my Canterwood and use the PC3200 ECC RAM that I currently have on that board (512 Meg each of the two sticks).
So what boards could hand either of these sticks? Note that I am partial to IWill duallies for Xeons and MSI for AMD duallies. Wish there was an Opteron that would use these sticks but alas those boards are using 144-pin memory.
Unfortunately, I must report that neither my MSI K7Dmasters, nor my Gigabyte 7DPXDW+ work with Corsair XMS 3200, so my guess is they won't with the 3500 variety either. Intel duallies could be a very different situation - I would check with the chaps over at 2cpu.com forums to find out whose using what ram with the Iwill.
How much are you looking to spend to replace your A7N8X system? What's your preference (AMD, Intel)?
Good luck PR!

I'm selling my Asus system for around $400 and I sold my Epox system for $300 and I have $100 in rebates coming and another $100 from misc work. That totals $900. If the Opteron board would not be using 144-pin memory I would know what to do. :( If I knew if the PC3200 ECC I have in the Canterwood would work on a dually system I would probably be set to go with either an AMD or Intel. I'm leaning towards AMD only because I have heard that the Xeon systems are fast but the AMD systems are still faster-however, I don't know if this comparsion was done against the E7505 chipset.
Try the pc3200 ecc in your Iwill AMD dually. My hunch is that it's a chipset issue, so if they work in that machine, they'll work in another AMD dually.

Thanks RH. I just happen to have a dual MP2400 system. :) So I was impressed to see that compared to a 2.8 Xeon that I only lost 10-15% in performance. However, I did need to get a new PSU so I have to disagree with gamepc on that one. I got an Enermax 550w EPS12v Server-class PSU. Hehe, the price of that PSU is close to the price of some Canterwoods I hear people complaining about for price.
