View Full Version : Cooling Advice for Newb

This is the first full sytem I've built, after many years away from PCs. I would appreciate any advice on cooling. The system will be used in a living area, so noise is an issue, but so long as it is kept to a reasonable level:fine - I'm not interested in a Zalman Reserator for instance! I'm interested in phase change cooling, e.g. vapochill, but how much noise does it make? I would prefer an internal sytem, but dependant on temperatures, it's not essential. Mods are planned for the future, FX53 or sucessor, faster RAM, etc. With bios 1005.21 (Bigtoes BIOS Bin), I've had it running stable at 250FSBX9, with 4:3 divider, and I've 3D benched at 2520. What cooling would you guys suggest for the Leadtek? With the Leadtek cooling solution it will do 429/1130, 55 idle, 80 with povray. CPU temps are 35 idle 57, after 2 hours of Prime95, with a slight overclock to 210FSB.
Cheers! :thumb:

how much of an overclock are you wanting to achieve? because you can't get extremely far without noisy fans.
also, vapo chill is a unit you can put on top or under your pc case. as for noise, i have no idea how much it makes but i'm pretty sure its not quite.

It's not so much how much I want to overclock now, but more for building a toolset for future overclocking. If I'm limited to 250FSB, which seems likely, subject to further testing, then I'm only ever going to et 2750 out of my 3500+. In the future I'm likely to be changing to the FX53 - or replacement, faster ram, a new motherboard etc. I would rather having coooling kit which would allow me to make use of this proposed new kit, than buy new cooling kit. I've seen the components for phase change avialable seperate e.g. http://www.watercooling.de/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=500&osCsid=00105ba97e1fc7f23431b1d2f16d361e
The savrow SR71(aka akasa eclipse 62, aka Globalwin YCC-61F1) is a pretty big case, and maybe it might fit inside - or am I just daydreaming :) Any views or anyone that has done this before? All appreciated!

What kind of case are you looking at to house all the goodies?

Thanks for the :welcome: RotorHead. I have the Savrow sr71 case mentioned in my siggy.

This is a pretty big server case thats previously been available as the Akasa Eclipse 62, and the Globalwin YCC 61F1. I'm more trying to illicit some opinion from you guys at the moment than going with a ready made plan. As far as the Vapochill goes I've seen some worrying threads over at the vapochill forum, concerning pin rot and 939 CPUs

Kinda making me think twice....

Savrow make some nice cases, how did I miss that
Anyway, I found this PDF file over on the Vapochill site, it shows graphs on the noise level at different power settings for the LightSpeed [AC]™

Appreciate the info RotorHead!
I must say I'm suprised by how quiet they actually are! I had visons of it sounding like a fridge freezer was going off in my front room! My CPU fan at the moment sounds like a jet at take off - at least I think its the CPU fan! Now can anyone put my mind to rest about pin rot on a 939?

you'll just got to smear the board in dialectric grease like the people on the forum are talking about. its about the only way to prevent pin rot.
