I was chatting with Mikki earlier and i mentioned CVD to him..thought i would share what i told Mik with you guys.

CVD (china video disk) is a format VERY similar to SVCD with ONE HUGE exception..it is COMPLIANT DVD.
For you guys in the US the res is 352X480 and for us in the UK its 352X576.Its commonly known as half D2 as DVD (D1) is 700ish x 480/576 dependant at what region you are etc.
You can format the sound to 44.1KHz and burn as none compliant SVCD and 99.9% of players will play it as a SVCD, also you can leave the sound as AC3 or 48KHz and it will still play under an SVCD header. Best though is you can leave the sound AC3 and burn as fully compliant DVD to DVDr and it will play without issue.

When burn't as SVCD you will notice at only2 pass VBR its quality is MUCH better than standard SVCD..the players seem to be able to handle the half DVD res much better. Also using TMPGenc I check the option to make the picture full screen with NO letter box, again this is handled much better by having the D2 res.

I have used it a lot with TV capture also using the hauppauge winPVR capture card. While captures at SVCD are fine they do lack good quality, what i found better was to cap at D1 8mb/s and then re encode to D2(352X576)at 2520VBR with 48KHz sound..results are stunning when using digital cable as the source.Ofcourse ripping DVD's is even better and if you have a DVD writer it is possible to have 2 full length DVD movies on 1 DVDr in above SVCD quality.

Have a play and see what you think..any question i will try to answer but it has been a while since i played with it.

And as bigtoe explained it to me, the quality is better because it keeps the native DVD resolution ratio....;)

CVD plays in like 99.99999% of standalone dvd players as svcd. You write the mpeg as a none compliant svcd so the player see's the header.

If you use IFOedit on the mpeg you can create a dvd image and burn as a dvd also, so it kills 2 birds with one stone.

from vcdhelp.com

What is CVD then?
CVD is basicly the same as SVCD but with a lower video resolution. Using a lower resolution you get more data for each pixel which means less mpeg artifacts such as blockiness compared to a SVCD with the same bitrate, but you will lose some sharpness. Most SVCD capable standalone DVD Players supports CVD.

Holy smoke, there is a lot more to video encoding that a simple click on a button... Can't believe the number of parameters you have to take into account to 'do it right'...

I think I'll read those articles 10 or 20 times and see if it sticks... :D :p
