i removed my BFG5900's heatspreader.
it was very easy.
i see a 6*C drop in max GPU temp while looping X-Isle tech demo in a 1152x864 window for 30 mins.
BFG5900 @ 510x950
with IHS = 80*C
w/o IHS = 74*C

hehe~ just FYI:
Serious Sam was the first game/benchmark to crash during my testing, not Doom III ;)

LOL! you know i dont screw around with ego threads db ;)
extra 10mhz ~ 100% stable in all benchmarks & games, including Serious Sam, Serious Sam SE, Quake III Extreme, 3DM2k1, 3DM2k3, X-Isle Tech Demo, and Doom III for many many many hours on end.
:)
Looks great thugsrook . . . . I just dont have the heart to try that on a $500 board. . :bonk:

With the IHS removed the heatsink will set right on the exposed core.

razor blade or xacto knife under the IHS.
should slice thru it rather easily.
then just pry it off slowly and clean it up.
5900's are still very good cards, but newer games may be limited to 800res for smooth gameplay.
