I'm losing my mind... :irk:
I used to use a site that had an online check for when you have an ftp server running. It was web based and you enter your IP and it attempts to login and displays the results. It was useful because it would allow you to see if you could login from the other side of the firewall (the outside world) without having to actually call a buddy or wait until you get to work etc.
I can't find the page now. It's driving me nuts. I swear it was a page off of one of the main ftp server software's home page like bulletproof ftp or Ipswitch or something like that.
Does anyone have a link? Thanks!!!

Damn Carl I remember playing with it too when I was looking at every FTP software package out there, but I can't remember where it was either...I've checked Ipswitch (the software I ended up buying) and it's not there...SORRY that sort of thing bugs the crap out of me too, especially when you're counting on using it:yikes:

Have you tried Microsft's Baseline Software. It goes through the system and locates faults whether in your firewall or with security settings ETc.... If you need a link or want to take a look let me know.

Thanks for the replies guys. :)
@WxWitch - I'm not really looking for a security check so much as a functionality check. I setup a new ftp server on my linux box. I can access it fine using an internal network address but that doesn't check whether my router/firewall will forward connections from the outside world. The page I'm looking for does that. You just supply your ISP assigned IP address and the remote server attempts to connect and displays the results.
@Paragon - I'm awful with bookmarks. I quit using them ages ago and just started using google and remembering my search phrases. It didn't work this time :( :coocoo:

Got the following for ya they might assist.
http://www.dslreports.com/scan
Key
Key:
OPEN PORT a port, or ports, appear to offer a possibly vulnerable service
All services should be closed unless you require them to be open
CLOSED PORT a port, or ports, are responding that they are closed
A software or hardware firewall can eliminate all responses and 'stealth' your IP completely, if you so desire.
FILTERED PORT the port is silent in response to open-port requests
No response to probes were detected.

Port by Port database
Your Results for this scan
Conclusion: Healthy Setup! We could detect no interesting responses from any of the commonly probed TCP and UDP ports. It would be difficult for an attacker to know where to start without further information.
TCP ALL : FILTERED No response packet was received.
UDP ALL : FILTERED No response packet was received.
The preceeding is what I got from the first link.

This one is actually very good for newbies like me. Hope they help ya.

Rotorhead got the closest so far :p Still not quite what I was looking for since as best as I can tell (my german isn't that good) they appear to be trying to connect and then filtering or at least interpreting the results and then displaying something else - the one I used before pretty much just echoed back what it received in real time from the ftp server. It was like being able to go over to someone elses house to see if you could login in to your ftp server without actually going anywhere... a web based ftp client is another way to look at it.

This one kind of worked but the one I used a while back was perfect, absolutely perfect, and I can't for the life of me find it. The problem with most of the web based ftp clients is that they give you their own error messages as opposed to just relaying the actual messages from the server, so when you are checking to see if your server is working from the outside you don't know by their custom error messages if the server responded and wouldn't allow the login, or the server didn't respond at all which is a big difference.
The link above displayed the actual login denial (anonymous user) from my server so at least I know it responded and refused the login attempt. The one I was looking for was cool, it gave a play by play report like this:
Attempting to connect to IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
--Connection successful
Sending username 'anonymous'
--server message 'anonymous access allowed send email as password'
Sending password anon@home.com
--server message 'welcome anonymous have fun!!'
Attempting to list contents of root directory
and then it would list the files and directories it found.
Anyway guys thanks for the help. I think I got enough out of that above link to verify everything is working correctly. :)
