THanks alot Hey, welcome to the forums! I think you will find it a friendly and knowledgeable place! I have the 6800 GT and just have to say that I LOVE it. I haven't had any experience with the X800 Pro, but I know that ATI makes great cards. My 9800 Pro served me VERY well for a year. It appears to me that most of ATI's new cards have better Direct3D performance while nVidia's new cards have better OpenGL performance, however, this changes with every new driver release. I think you will be VERY happy with either card, but for the money and slightly better performance, I would go with the 16 pipe GeForce 6800 GT over the 12 pipe X800 Pro.
As for manufacturers: only a few are cranking out the 6800 series in mass quantities. The three manufacturers that I have seen the most of are eVGA, BFG Technologies, and PNY. You can find the eVGA cards at eVGA.com (you can actually purchase them through the manufacturer's website) under the products section, although they are currently backordered, or at newegg.com. eVGA offers a one year warranty and a 90-Day "STEP-UP" program if you decided to upgrade after owning the card for three months. The eVGA 6800 GT also comes with a free copy of FarCry if you don't already own it. The BFG cards can be found all over the net and come pre-overclocked (OC series) with a TRUE lifetime warranty. Finally, the PNY cards can be found by using a search engine (froogle.com) and come with no frills and a LIMITED lifetime warranty (AS long as they are still PRODUCING the card they honor the warranty).
No matter which brand you get, make sure you have a beefy power supply :!: Keep us up to date on your decision ;)

Either would work quite well.
You might also want to look into a 6800GT, or 6800 Ultra. You can get a BFG 6800GT OC from BestBuy, for a retail price of $400. It would give either of the ATi cards good competition
If you can wait until some HL2 benchmarks come out, i think that might help make up your mind as well.
I am in the same position, I can't decided between x800pro or 6800GT. I know the 6800GT is winning now, but time will tell with new drivers from ATI.

I have an X800Pro and it runs Doom 3 (with tweak o course) really well. If i were you i would go with the 6800GT it comes with next gen features like PS/SM3 and Ultrashadow II technology.
