Well crap, I put a small chip in the corner of an AthlonXP 1800 tonight. Unfortunately this machine is a donation to my cousin :( Windows is loading on it right now and I'll do some stress testing on it for a few days. What do you guys think?

Alright, setup just rebooted and the desktop is up. I kind of feel like if I stress it and it's ok then it will probably be ok in the long run... :bonk:

dnld and run prime95 overnight, if it passes, it`ll prolly be alright.

If it booted up, count yourself lucky :shhh:

Just be really careful next time you change the heatsink out :thumb:

This is pretty much what I was thinking, nice to have someone to agree with you though :) I just wish I was keeping this rig... at least I could keep an eye on it.

:o Truth be told, this is the second time I've done this. I had a T-bird 1.4 that ran fine for a couple years then I decided to switch it into a different board and when I took the hsf off and cleaned the thermal paste off I noticed a corner was black and crumbly. I flicked the crumbly bits off with my fingernail. That proc did not work afterwards. That one was with the HSF coming OFF not going on. :beat:

That statment doesn't sound right, in the context of CPU's and computers. :chit: :chit:

Wasn't there a change in the CPU dies somewere around the 1.6 - 1.8 era? I know the newer ones don't really have the chipping problems.

I have killed a 2500+ from chipping the corner so if they did fix the issue it can still happen. Then again I was shimming the retainer springs on a swiffty waterblock to try to get better contact and just maybe the spring tension was to much.

I've chipped one myself, :o the problem I ran into was the L2 cache on the barton drop out of sight. You might want to check it. It ran ,but ran like a slug.
If it's running without problems it should be fine. Just make sure you never take the HSF off again. :chit:

So far so good... I just put the new folding client on it, I'll let that go for a few days :mischeif:

I once Split a core in 2, removing a HSF..... it was completely damaged... (Celeron 1.1 GHZ)

You are very lucky. Anytime I have chipped the corner of an AMD chip, bye bye it goes. . . :fire:

I may have spoken to soon. The first night I had Prime running on it and I didn't check it the next morning but waited until I got home from work. Windows was up but there were no programs running. Prime 95 and MBM5 were both shut down. I checked the prime logs and didn't see any errors. The kids were in the room after school (before I got home) and one of them had been randomly typing on the keyboard so I figured maybe the windows just got closed.

But I think it rebooted after about 10 hours of Prime. I put the folding client on last night and it wasn't running this morning - just an empty windows desktop. Looks like it rebooted after about 3 hours of folding.

Crap, I don't know. I need to get the thing on the UPS because we've had bad weather here the last couple of days and the power at our house becomes unreliable when it's wet out. I think the power may have just flashed. I'll get it on the UPS later tonight and rerun the test just to eliminate a power problem.

It's been folding all day - cpu is up to 43C.

I think the reboots yesterday were due to intermittent AC power at the house.

Hurricane Charley is on the way. This could be my finally entry. I'm nearly exhausted.

Just joking, I'm just a bit giddy with excitement from watching the weather channel. :p

You have damaged the core & an irreversible process now hangs over your CPU.

The process in question is, it will continually break down with the passage of time.

Heatsink on/off will just exaberate the situation so if you have it clocked, It might be an idea to put it at stock speeds. First one I ever killed was through taking an Evaporator head on & off. The Axia CPU finally died after about 6 months of first noticing the edges of the die crumbling. I spect having that 1.0Gig Axia at 1.75Ghz under the Vapo didnt help it's life span, but what top time that was back then :thumb:
