can't understand whether we should/or should not throw a party to celebrate the end of the world (or at least the idea of it happening a bit sooner than expected :D )...

PS. factors increasing the chance (+50% at least) of party being held are shown in the upper picture :D

Apparently for every successful test they will speed up the particles. And what if one tiny little blackhole got sucked into another, and so and so, would that not increase the mass of the blackhole?

they're not even smashing atoms together yet guys. Just testing both rings on their own to make sure they are accelerating particles up to speed. They'll probably start smashing stuff together in a few weeks once they make sure everything is up to speed. Then you can worry about temporary, miniscule blackholes destroying the earth if you choose to. :p

For months they've predicted the end of the Earth yesterday. Now that it didn't happen they are looking into it just a little bit further (not far enough of course) :coocoo: and they're saying: "Yes, well... Just wait until they REALLY start things!"

I've heard it might take up to another year to get the LHC ready for the detection of Higgs Bosons.

I've heard it might take up to another year to get the LHC ready for the detection of Higgs Bosons. There is a difference between:

- producing a Higgs (this can be done pretty soon, depending on how energetic the Higgs turns out to be of course) and

- detecting its signature in all the data being produced (this could take more than a year).

supposedly....

they are gonna discover that 'string theory" is real by unlocking the secrets of time travel. (i kid you not)

what they will find out is that time travel itself isnt entirely possible, but you can jump to another string (universe) at a different date in time, but it wont be "your" universe.

supposedly

well, the way it goes (supposedly) is that you cant go back home. you cant identify which timeline you came from. the best you can hope for is to come close.

and the universe you went back in time to... is gonna be slightly different, or maybe drasticly different, then the one you came from.

it uses the theory that all possibilities that can happen do happen. each possibility creates a new (?) time line/sting/universe. you travel to that timeline at whatever point in time you want, but its not your timeline.

again, supposedly.

Freddy

Just to set things straight for those interested:

- this "time travel" theory is a fantasy based on the "many-worlds interpretation" of quantum mechanics, which is also still just a theory and definately not generally accepted. It has nothing to do with string theory however.

- string theory, on the other hand, predicts 6 hidden dimensions, next to the 3+1 (space and time) that we already know. The LHC is going to look for evidence of these extra dimensions: not worlds/universes/timelines or whatever. But unfortunately, even if they exist, it is not very likely that the LHC is strong enough to detect these dimensions either, so...

Source: BBC News (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7632408.stm)

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva will be shut off until spring 2009 while engineers probe a magnet failure.

The incident on 19 September caused a tonne of liquid helium to leak out into the experiment's 27km-long tunnel.

Officials said the time required to fully investigate the problem precluded a re-start before the lab's winter maintenance period.

The collider is built to smash protons together at huge speeds, recreating conditions moments after the Big Bang.
