I got a call from my borhter in laws buddy, he had planned on getting a new PC and said he had ordered the parts...I asked where and he mentions TigerDirect ! :yikes:

Well, guy didnt ask me any tips...said he knew what he was doing (hes 16, Im 31)..
Get a call from my brother in law today..."can you check my buddies PC..it wont boot" :rotflmao:
I go over there....clear CMOS, make sure the mobo aint shorting...check cables, etc, etc...no boot.
Starts up, fans go on...hdd spins up...nothing though

After all my checking..he mentions maybe the pin broke off the CPU  what'd you say?
he then proceeds to tell me he bent a pin (thought he said pinS..)
I remove the CPU..first off...no thermal paste....
2 missing pins....

I tell him the great news..ask what he paid for it...$190ish...tell him to check Newegg...XP3000+ is $180, yeh, great buy bud!

anyways...looking at the bottom of the CPU...brass triangle in upper right corner...he broke the 2 pins by that area:>

OOOX * <--- triangle here
OOOOO
OOOOOX

any way to fix this? (I dont think so)

I hate to laugh 'cause you gotta try to fix it but this is funny. Ahhh the knowledge of a 16-year-old  . I was that smart at one time :D .

I recall someone at ABX having a similar problem but I did not see any fixes (try a search). If the pins broken off then they could be stuck inside the CPU mount. If so then the next time you try to install new cpu it won't seat or the same pins will break.

If they are only bent then maybe you could try to bend them back (very slowly or they could break off)? I would not trust them myself cause they could easily break off (once bent twice shy)

P.S. I would charge them a $180 service call

I should have searched ABX efor eposting. Searched for "broken" and "pin" and came up with a few hits. One post soldered them back on and was up and running.

Mighty tricky job.

Ill check around...from his description, he tried to bend them back with a screw driver...I dont think they are in the socket...
At least I got myself a nice keychain!

try xtremesystems.org. a few guys over there had some good suggestions. Afew mentioned soldering and one even mentioned something about heating a pin, sticking it in and using AS epoxy. Dunno its worth a try I guess.

I have seen this very thing done on an A64 by someone that was hired at a company that was a "professional" and an "experienced overclocker". LOL! So he said anyway. He lasted 2 days and the CPU was found hiding in the lab along with the motherboards he blew up. LOL
