Recently, we managed to lay our hands on insider information on the first Intel desktop processor based on the Nehalem micro-architecture. Codenamed Bloomfield, this processor will replace the quad-core 45nm Core 2 " Yorkfield" processors as Intel's flagship desktop processor.

Intel is already preparing their partners for the launch. To the right is an updated table showing the future positioning of Intel desktop processors with the Bloomfield right at the top. Intel will also be launching lower-end models for the Performance and Mainstream levels, as you will see later.

As this point in time, Intel has yet to officially brand the Bloomfield processor. However, it is likely that Intel will end up calling it the Core 3 processor to ride on the back of its tremendous marketing efforts for the Intel Core brand, even though it's based on a different micro-architecture.
