I was wondering if I should put my cd reader in PIO would it help performance any I got my harddrive currently in UDMA5 thanks for any help.

I would say you are in the best setting as it is (UDMA5) PIO would be a few steps backward in performance. I'm no expert in much of anything however ;) A friend of mine's laptop would stutter quite a bit during DVD playback and we looked at the transfer mode which was set to PIO - changing to DMA fixed it.

For the "best" possible efficiency & compatibility, when Windoze first detects new hardware it assigns a transfer mode to it. Old drives will use DMA or Multi-word DMA, newer drives use Ultra DMA. Completely farked drives will use PIO. Within each method are numbered subgroupings, starting at 1 for the most basic compatibility standard and higher numbers for better/more recent standards as new hardware capability comes along (ie: UDMA Mode 5 is more recent than UDMA Mode 1).
