Hi Everyone,

I just joined the forum yesterday, although I have been reading it for a while. I am currently buying the parts to build a new PC, (the ball and chain finally gave me the green light) but I have no idea what kind of wattage I need for my PSU. My new system will be as follows:

Thermaltake Tsunami Dream Series VA3000SNA Case
OCZ Powerstream PSU ???wattage???
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe mobo
Intel P4 3.2GHz Prescott
LiteOn 1213s 12X DVDRW
LiteOn 8X Double Layer DVDRW
LiteON 52X CDRW (Maybe)
ATI X800XT Platinum Edition video card
Creative Labs SB Audigy 2ZS Platinum sound card
Iomega 750 Zip Drive
Floppy Drive
2GB Corsair XMS Xtreme Memory TwinX1024-3200XLPT
or
2GB OCZ3700EB (haven't decided)
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM HD for OS
Maxtor 180GB HD for files/backup

As you can see, I've already decided on a Powerstream PSU, I'm just not sure how much power I need. I've been looking at the 420w. As for the rest of the system, you can feel free to suggest alternatives. I do primarily high end graphics such as Maya, Catia, Solidworks, and Photoshop. I also ocassionally like a good game. I'm not very big on overclocking, all I need a stable system that kicks. I only get to do this about every 3-4 years, and this is the first PC I've built. My current PC is a 733MHz that has served me well, but it just can't cope with the programs I use now.

Thanks for any assistance you can give.

I would go with the 520W PSU with the equipment you are going to use. Also I would go with the 3700EB best ram out there ;) Next is the processor.... If you are going to overclock it you will need at least water cooling. BTW a Northwood will beat the prescott speed for speed up to 4GHZ.

YOu may get away with just running with the 420w psu but IMO I would go as big as you can afford for expandability. Newer cards may require more juice (6800 is an example), more drives = more juice, dual core processors, etc. Having more than you need can also place less strain on it (although from what I hear the OCZ psu are really good).

My next psu will be from OCZ :thumb: .

P.S. Interested in folding?

Heard that Intel is releasing new prices for its line up come August 22. I forget the exact details but I know the 3.4C will drop a fair bit making it very attractive (especially if you can get a 30-capper). Should oc very well indeed :D . I'm on the look out for one.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick replies. I've been going either way with the memory, but, since you twisted my arm, I'll go with the OCZ. It should allow for some overclocking (if I ever get brave enough), whereas I don't think I have as mush potential with the Corsair. As for the processor, I thought the Prescott would serve me better with the additional cache, but then again, I'm no expert. I'll definately put down the 520w Powerstream for my PSU choice. Maybe if Intel drops the price of their chips enough I'll still come out even with what I pay for the system. Thanks for the heads up on the impending price drop. I can wait that long.
