I know that the performance difference is minimal on a nforce2 board between single and dual channel ddr

what about for these intel chipsets? do dcddr make a huge performance difference?

Yes, most definitely. Especially when the bus speed is increased. The Athlon isn't built to maximize memory bus utilization, the P4 will utilize the available bandwidth much better.

Then again, it all comes down to what you use a computer for. Benchmarks are nice and all that, but I would say it's only if you use memory hungry software (like games or video editing stuff) that you may notice a clear advantage.

yeah

i'll be using it for gaming and video encoding

got a new sony trv33 mini dv cam :)

yay!

Then I'd say you'd benefit from dual channel DDR in conjunction with a P4. Video editing and gaming like memory bandwidth a whole lot :).

yay!

gosh... i've never had such a hard time choosing ram before

i'd get the pc3700 gold but i think it's overkill considering i don't even think my processor will go that high knowing my luck

i guess i'm looking for some good pc3500 and if my chip does go that high then i can use the 5:4 divider and i'll be okay :)

so now with that in mind....

any ram suggestions reasonably priced?
2 x 256 or 2 x 512 < or = to $160

I'm not the person to ask about memory for the P4 to be honest. I'm still on my little Celeron 1.2GHz, and I just installed a second 256MB PC133 module yesterday to bring me up to 512MB :D.

If you plan a lot of video editing, then 1GB may be nice to have, but I don't know if it's overkill - I haven't read any good advice on that issue backed up with facts (usually only "yeah, you really need 1GB" but no solid facts saying why).
But 512MB would be a minimum for video editing...that's for sure.

I have heard good things about Mushkin, TwinMOS and Crucial memory. Corsair, GEiL and OCZ get a lot of OCing attention too. As for personal experience, I'm not the guy to ask :).

hehehe

thanks for the help anyway! :)

I find 512mb the minimum for a good performing system. I don't do video editing but i've heard a lot of guys using 1gb.
As for what to buy, i allways buy what is the best my money can afford. But that's just me... :)

hehehe i would too but i don't have that sort of money...

okay... maybe i do... but i just don't feel right spending 200+ on 2 sticks of ram

I didn't say u should do that. Just define what money u want to spend and then spend them to buy the best performance u can... ;)

i know! :)

i wish i could justify to myself spending 200+ for 2 sticks of the pc3700 gold... but i just can't!!! AHHH....

Well, from your sig I can read that you have 512MB of PC3200 memory. Are you planning on building a new rig or replacing the Athlon XP / nForce one?
If you plan on replacing that, sell the mobo/CPU, use the 512MB and buy another 512MB PC3200 and run either stock or OC and use a 5:4 memory ratio.

If you ram can do 450-460 DDR with no more than 2.8 vdimm stable and thats a 2.4C at 3.4GHz thats all you will need at 5:4.

it can do ddr436 @ 2-3-3-6 with 2.9 volts

... it's not the best ram

How high are u going to oc? As high as your cpu can go?

of course! :) :)

as HIGH as i can
