:D Nice looking board, finally fixes the few faults the P4C800 had to begin with...
BTW, looking at the memory score, why are a lot of 875P boards getting ~5000MB/s buffered yet you're getting <4500MB/s?
Overclocking's pretty awesome though! :D
So sad that it's so expensive.. :(
How does it compare to say an IC7-G? They've both got basically the same features.
Ok, the memory scores at DDR400 are a little misleading, but I ran them with the BIOS to by SPD, so the memory is set to 2.5-4-4-8. I'll run it with the 2.5-3-3-7 timings for you, but that's why there is a big difference. Then look at the DDR500 and see the real power.
I had the IC7-G and had problems with it, but they both are awsome boards in my book. My biggest grip with the IC7-G was it was picky with the memory, but that was before all the new BIOS's. . . . . .

i'm amazed you can get pc3700 gold stable at 255/260mhz at 2.85v as mine can't do that stable at 2.85v on PX865PE PRO2 board (can run sandra mem benchies but not 3dmark2001se )

I see... Would there really be that much difference between 2.5-4-4-8 and 2.5-3-3-7? What I'm seeing is that there's a large difference between 2-2-2-5 and 2.5-3-3-7. But then again, at the high speeds sync, the Gold really shines!:yummy:

Let me know if there are any other benchs you'd like to see. I tried to keep the review consise, but not too long. I left out the 3DMark scores, but they run up to DDR520 stable, then it starts getting hit or miss. . . .
I was thinking about running some RAID 1 benchs to see how they work on the ICH5-R chip, but if I do it, it's tomorrow.
I'll do this for ya, I have to run home, but in the morn, I will run 4 benchs. 2 at DDR400 & 2 at DDR500 w/ the 2.5-3-3-7 & 2.5-4-4-8 and we'll see what the big difference is.

Thanks Hawk!
BTW, nice concise review! :D
Ok, I can do them tomorrow also.
What I think we should do also, is come up with a standard suite of benchs to run on a box. That might make things easier in the future for future reviews.

memtest86 loop test #4, then 5 then 8
goldmem 2 full standard passes
sandra mem, cpu, cpu multimedia
pcmark2002
3dmark2001se, 3dmark2003
aida32 memory
sciencemark
superpi 1m, 4m, 8m and 16m
quickpi 2.0

glexcess 1.2b
codecreatures
specviewperf 7.0
for disk benching
winbench 99
hdtach
atto
drivebenchmark
wish i could get my hands content creation via download hehe
That looks great, but we'd have to make sure Mikki wants to do a review that long. . . I'd be doing that for hours with all the speeds. . . . :-)

eva2000, I think we all run loads of different benchies, we all have the ones we like. When it comes to reviews, however, even if we were willing to put such a huge review up I doubt most would look thru them (hehe...except us).
We've discussed this at length but never came up with a definitive answer, but I agree...I'd like to see all the same also. :) As always, I'm open to suggestions....:) Feel free to PM me if you have any you want to discuss...:D

IMO though, you should have some game tests. I mean that's what a lot of us are in the computer arena for.
That sounds great, but think about it, how do you really gague how the machine runs the games? All the graphics cards run differently. . . If you have an idea, i'm open to it. . .
But look at it this way, I run say UT2K03 scores and they smoke everything, I have a BFG 5900 Ultra, and you have a Radeon 9800pro, how do you compare the 2? Memory & CPR speed also have a factor in the whole picture also. . . . I wish it was more cut a dry. . . .

Hawk ~ you have good point (gaming benchies) but its still good to see how the overclock and memory effected your gaming scores, even if we cant compare them to our own.
im in the opposite boat from you ~ im on a (too slow) ti4600.
 excellent review btw
Thank you. . . . . I'll do some game stuff tomorrow, but they will be with the BFG 5900 Ultra. . . And I can tell you right now, the numbers are pretty damn high. . . .
I've been using the Hardocp U2K Benchmark tool. Makes my job a little easier. . . . Runs all the res's for me and gives a nice report. . . .

The thing I look for reviews and hasn't been touched by any reviews outta there is the 'issues' or some common things which are taken for granted to work and is not the case all the time. A good example is like the bug in the P4P800 original BIOS 1005 that needs to be updated to other version.
I liked Hawk mentioning using BIOS v1009 ...but any other things/issues/ basic stuff but taken for granted a user should be aware of ?.....would be awesome

I'd do something like running very CPU intensive game benches like the 3D Mark 2K3 CPU benches. I can think of many other mainly CPU benches that are games. The Botmatch of UT2003 is mainly CPU/memory limited if you've got a pretty good card.

can someone please confirm this board is 4 phase power still ...rite?

Nice review hawk,
how stable was the system @ 520ddr, also what settings did you run in the bios ie; was spectrum enabled? was turbo enabled? was performance mode enabled (PAT)? and what was the agp v. it seems my 9700pro doesnt like the higher fsb speeds (275+)
Qba73
07-10-2003, 05:07 PM
hot dam running ddr500 @ 2-3-3-7 with my pc3700 dual gold, this is good a@@ mem my take is the new pc4000 from ocz is just tweaked 3700 modules figuring that pc 3700 runs at 2-3-3-7 and the 4000 runs at 2.5-4-4-7 im guessing the chips are one in the same.
how stable is 1:1 @ 275 fsb with this mem? well might as well try it myself, i'll drop the 2 to 2.5 to be safe..
Qba73
07-10-2003, 05:18 PM
i'll be dammed 275 1:1 works!! ddr @DDR550 unfortunatly not very stable, benchs run fine however games choke..well im happy running 278 (3.33ghz) 5:4 ddr444 2-3-3-6 san scores just above 6gigs..
Very nice. I want to see what a 5900 and perhaps some better ram will do in my system as well.

Just a side note on the gaming benchmark thing. U could use benchs like Quake 3 which are more mem than vga related.
BTW why 128k would be best for a raptor raid 0 array?

My thoughts exactly JoeBar!

Ok, let's start with more EYE Candy for you guys. This shows why DDR timings mean everything to quality RAM. This is a nice comparision on this board.
I ran DDR500 3 times w/ different memory timings:
DDR500 2-3-3-7
DDR500 2.5-3-3-7
DDR500 2.5-4-4-8
Look at the results. This test was done w/ the OCZ 3700's. . . . . .
Again: MEMORY TIMINGS MEAN EVERYTHING . . . . . .
First 3 PICS are UNBUFFERED SCORES. . . .
And last, but not least. . . . Buffered
Chuck232
07-11-2003, 04:44 AM
 :eek2:
Wow, I never knew that RAM timings alone did that much! :o
JoeBar,
I set the Stripe to 128K because that is the best performing. I benched all three and even though 4K Stripe rocks in the benchmarks, when you run WinBench. . . The real application scores are way lower . . .
128K seems to be the happy medium . . . .

After reading this, and the review, I'm going with the P4C800-E.

I'm going with a 2.6c and OCZ3700 ram.

Hawk can u pls post your winbench scores? Also what file system are u using, ntfs or fat32?
JoeBar, no problem, but the Winbench will have to wait till something tomorrow. I have 2 games to goto tonight.
Also, with XP, I always use NTFS. Sorry, I should have posted that. . .

I want to get some good Serial ATA drives for my RAID set. I currently only have 2 20Gig Ultra ATA 133 7200 rpm drives. I was thinking about getting two of the 36Gig WD Raptor 10,000rpm S-ATA drives? Would that be a good choice to run with this board you think. http://store.westerndigital.com/product.asp?sku=2325479
I can get them for $135 a piece. Or I could get 2x120 Gig WD 7,200RPM S-ATA drives 8MB Buffer also. Same drives but bigger and slower RPM.
What do you think is the best cost/performance choice. Will I see that huge a difference with the 10k rpm drives?

Yes, the Zalman 7000 will fit nicely, and does a fine job at cpu cooling IMHO.

Well, just flashed up the BRAND NEW P4C800E-Dlx. all I can say is SWEET.... Not a single hitch. Mind you its a basic system. Single CD Single IDE HDD. (I left the RAID set-up in the old system.... and access it over the lan)
The first thing I have noticed about the MoBo, is that northbridge sure does get HOT... wow. I've put a fan on it, and it has helped a bit... but deffinately a new HSF for it.
Nice MoBo.... I'm glad I made the jump! Now lets just hope that F'in Prescott will work in it!!
The shipped BIOS is 7.xx I do not have a floppy in the case yet, and as soon as I do... I'll pop in the newest ver.... or is this BIOS ok?
The Raptors are awsome in my book. My only complaint on them is that I think 36GB now a days is a joke. I would have rather gotten 2 160GB drives and mirrored them, but the ones I wanted we not available.
Go for either the Raptors or
MAXTOR 160GB 7200RPM Serial ATA Hard Drive Model 6Y160M0 8MB (line, you don't have to get the 160MB, they also have a 120MB)

I'm not so sure that the NB is 'hotter' then the orignal board, but it is warm. You can also do this to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside:
Take off the NB via the 2 retention clips. It's very easy. Then take that nasty Bubble Gum colored gunk they put on it and give it a nice bath. . . . . Be gentle when you clean it.
Then apply a little Artic Silver Compound and put the heatsink back on and viola.
What you can also do, instead on buying another fan, if you have the SLK-900 heatsink, turn the fan upside down so the air flows down. The way the fins are designed, it will also 'cool' the NB. . .
Just my 2 cents for ya. . . . .

With all due respect Hawk, I have read many of your posts and reviews on other computer forums and I question your ability to be unbias toward Asus and Nvidia. If other corporations had far superior products, I believe you would still use and defend these two companies. Why...I do not know?
I am a long time and happy user of both Asus and Nvidia and have no beef with either one, but when I saw you were reviewing the new Asus Canterwood here, I knew before I read a single word, it would be a “glowing” review. And I was not incorrect.
I seriously question whether or not you are paid by either of these companies to give “positive” reviews of their products on forums such as this or ABXZone.com.
Again this is all comes after much reading of your extensive posting (and pimping of Asus) on other forums and seeing that you have almost a devotional defense of Asus and Nvidia when there is any criticism of their products. And I have not been the only one to notice this pattern.
I do not doubt that this new Asus board is a fine mobo, but I cannot at this point believe that your reviews of any Asus/Nvidia products are unbiased. (Unlike the reviews from Prom or others on this forum)
I think others who read your reviews need to know this as well.

Morton, Sorry, but I am paid by none of the companies you mentioned, nor any that I test. Defend these companies, sorry, that is not me. I do not defend any of them, and I cannot think of a thread where I have defended any company. I buy all the equipment out of my own pocket and make my own decisions.
I have been a long supporter of Corsair, did you see my Corsair 3700 review?
Also if you really read my stuff, you can see that I change equipment more often then the shirt on my back.
Canterwood "glowing" review ? ? ? I would not say the review is glowing, I leave it more up to you to decide. All I did was run some standard benchs to help people make a choice, and gave my input on the advances from the previous board. You basically said it below, "Far Superior". I cannot for anything out there say one is far superior over the other. All of the Canterwoods I have personally tested, ASUS, ABIT & Gigabyte, all would have had glowing reviews if I did one for each. They all performed with 2-5% of each other. It's really the end user who has to make a decision on what options and feature you really need.
I'm sorry you feel that way, but hey, maybe you should pick up some stuff and do a review. I'd like to read it. . . . .

Nice review of your raptors in conjuction with ICH5R and memory tolerences. Poor review of the board.

Also, guys, for the P4C800-E Deluxe, it SUPPORTS PRESCOTT.
New power design supports Intel next generation Prescott CPU

But, I remember the P4P800 also saying it supported Prescott CPUs... seems like it's no longer there.
Yes it does, read the CPU spec:

You should not change all the settings that you posted unless you know what each one does.
What I would say, first find the maximum OC on your CPU. To do that, go into the BIOS and Turn the AI Overclock to Disabled so you can manually change the FSB speed.
Then up the FSB from 200 to 210 and make sure that the DDR speed is on AUTO or 320. Then reboot. IF that works, do the same thing and add another 10mhz to the FSB. My 3.0C would cap out at 247FSB. . . . Then once you find your cap, you can do a stability test. Once you know the CPU is stable at those speeds you can then start to tweak the RAM . . . . . .

I'm hoping to build a new computer and would like to use this board but I have a couple of questions hopefully you all can help with.
What's the best memory for this board? Is 1 GB enough for serious gaming...and work!
Will I tell a big difference between P4 processors...2.8-3.0 or 3.2...
Also, favorites for video cards?
and DVD-R....
 Thanks for your thoughts!
Chris Starnes
Best memory for the board is:
For tight timings: OCZ, Mushkin or Corsair 2500's.
relaxed timings, but high DDR speeds, OCZ 3700's. . .
Also, 1GB of RAM is great. You can run 4 OCZ3700's and increase the memory utilization by @ 5%. . . .
For the Processor, the 2.4C & 2.6 are very cheap and OC very well. My 2.4C clocks into the 290's. The 2.8C's are also nice. .
The 3.0C & 3.2C are also awsome, they just do not OC as well.
My 3.0C was max 247FSB, and my 3.2C is 238FSB. . Still, not too shabby. Spend your money on what you need.
Right now for video cards, if you want high end, either the NVidia FX 5900 Ultra or ATI Radeon Pro 9800. . . .
For DVD-R, I am using the Toshiba SD-R5002. . I love it. . .
Let us know if you need anything else. . . .

Great review Hawk. I have done research and every tech site says that you should use pc3200 ddr ram (preferrably 1 GB of it). And I was thinking about 2x512mb Corsair pc3200 XMS with low latency platinum spreaders 2-2-2-6(or 5?). Reading your review, I noticed absolutely no mention of this ram and I was wondering why you favor pc3700? If I OCed the pc3200 with those fast timings, will I lose some of the latency and have to change it to cl 2.5 or something? Sorry if I sound confused. Thnx!
I don't have any PC3200 any more to test, but I can tell you, you need a majic pair of PC3200's to run effectivly. The main advantage of the Canterwood is to run the memory & CPU in sync. Say you get a CPU that can OC to 250FSB, if you run the memory in sync, it has to be at DDR500. . . PC3200s chances of getting there are slim, and with aggressive timings, slimmer.
That is why you need 3500's, 3700's or better.
My 3500 Corsairs, maxed out at DDR552 w/ 2-3-3-6
My OCZ 3700 max DDR500 is 2-3-36, but DDR520 is 2.5-3-3-7
Sometimes you need to sacrific some of the tighter timings for a high FSB/DDR speed.
Hope that helps ya. . . .

Best place to get XP and OFFICE Pro? I am in a teaching program and should qualify for educational prices...
I was going to use my 17" CTX monitor...which currently is supporting 1000 something by 700 something (sorry' I'm not at home!). Will this monitor be ok for a while or should I spring for something you recommend?

Hawk (concerning your advices on asusboard forum) >> I must admit I'm really impressed ... for the moment I tried 210, 215 and 220MHz (with safe memory timings) and the system seems to be totally stable at 220MHz (P4C 3.0 @ 3.3GHz) with the VCore on "auto" after 1 hour of Prime (still running).
I don't understand what really happen with these Asus mb and the VCore as increasing it seem to have simply no positive effect on the o/c ... Indeed, increasing the vcore do not affect its minimum value at load (and so just increase the range between max & min), that's really weird ...
Anyway I'm very happy with what you asked me to do, I'll continue to increase the FSB if 220 appear to be stable and keep you informed.
Thank you again and keep in touch

I am not sure if I will O/C this time but I might just, want to check all my options.
Yeah Yeah I followed you guys here from Anandtech it is me.

MIGHT is the big word of the day in then end it may end up O/Cd but certainly wont be huge if I do.
If I dont then isnt spending the extra money on 3500 a waist?
Also how far can 3200 go if I do try it, the thing is for 1024 going with the top dogs for memory is not cheap.
If I can get some 3200 that can O/C and not die on me then I can see it being worth it.
But if the only way I can get a decent O/C then I will just spend the money I need to.
My main goal is to have the system take full advantage of the 800 mhz CPU and run at the best performance.
I am a gamer and thats what I want it to do run Planetside like a madman, my 2.0 right now is kinda throwing in the towel after being O/Cd for so long.
You can also go with 3200's, but 3500's will give you some room IF you ever OC. . .
If you go with the 3200's, either the Corsair XMS LL 3200's or OCZ 3200's should do great. There are many other out there, but personally, I have not tested them. Make sure they are on the boards supported memory list to avoid any problems. . . .

Are the LL's that much better?
You can purchase 2 3200's independantly, and they will probably work fine, but if you get the LL's they are both guranteed to run at the speeds specified. .
Just a FYI, the Corsair XMS3500's that I have, we both purchased at different times and can run up to 450DDR together. . .

The mobo info for the board does show the Corsair 3500 being compatible.
The list might not be up to date on it yet at the Asus site, cause I only saw one listing for the OCZ ram.
Kingston and Corsair are both on there, for the Kingston it looks like around 300 for the HyperX.
I did read a review which actually used the Crucial DDR3200 on the AsusP4C800 Deluxe and it ran find with all the memory they used, granted this isnt the same mobo as that but pretty darn close.
The difference between the memory they tested was no more then 3% even with the different memory timings.
Go for the one that is not going to burn a hole in your pocket. . . I've heard good things about the Hyper X's also. . .

The SLK 900 is a good one not too worried about fit just keeping it cool.
I looked at the pictures for the board and its gonna be no sweat in the fit department.
Thanks for the benchies and incites, Hawk.
I got another batch of OCZ3700Gold direct from them to test on my P4P800 ( 3rd batch ). I have gone the extra mile to test but can't get past 224fsb, stable, now way. I don't think it's the ram.
The ide performace is terrible too. Seems there are a number of people having these problems with that board. Bios changes do not help.
My 2.6C does up to 264fsb and rock stable at 250 5:4 and cool with my ZalmanALCU.
So I am looking to RMA the board and I am considering the Abit IC7 or the P4C800. Getting the P4C800 may be easier in the exchange.
I hate to ask this but, forgetting the price diff., which board do you think has the best chance of success and fewer probs with the OCZGold. I want that 250fsb at 1:1. :yummy:
Croc, sorry to hear about the 3700 problems. As far as the P4P800, I have not tried it personally, but I have heard mixed results. Actually, I have heard mixed results on all of the boards.
I have personally tested the P4C800 D, P4C800-E D & Abit IC7-G. Of them, I like the P4C800-E D the best. All of the boards can run 250 1:1 easily. The Abit does have an issue running 1:1 at 255FSB or higher at the moment. A BIOS update might fix it. There is also a work around for it, you can run 250FSB and use SetFSB to push the OC'ing higher then 255. But the ASUS's do not have that problem. On the P4C800-ED, I've gotten as high as 180FSB 1:1 stable w/ this new memory. . . . Still playing. . . . But 250FSB 1:1 is a joke and very easy w. the 3700's. . . .
As far as IDE, if you are getting a board like this, you either have to switch to SATA to get great performance, or grin and bear w/ the IDE performance as of right now. . .

Thanks for that.
It is possible the board I got is just an underperformer so I could just try the swap. From the posts I have read, people seem to be getting 250+ 1:1 on the 3700Gold on the P4C800 boards.
I did a mini-survey with people I knew had the same WesternDigital120jb SpecialEdition drives on an MSI648SiS board and an Asus KT400 AMD board and they all bench in Sandra at 22,000????. So either we all have bad drives or Sandra gives off low numbers on the WD drives.
Does the new P4C800E have the northbridge heatsink parallel or still ****ed at an angle? I don't want any probs clearing the Zalman 7000ALCU I have now.
Is it possible that a weak power supply would limit an overclock at 1:1 to the lows I have had. I have an Enermax 465 FC and have not had any problems and the power readings are fine in Asus Probe and in bios.

The NB is parallel, and the PSU should be good.
The 7000AlCu fits NP.
Yup thanks for that.
I realized I have a spare Enermax 465 unopened anyway. Did pretty well in Anandtech's recent review.

UPDATE the board is in up and running as of right now.
What a breeze to put in and flash with the update software.
Took about an hour total with having to install a few things like soundcard drivers etc.
Not overclocked just yet as I have my new HD to put in tomorrow and then re-do the OS :(
The flash to the 1010 bios could not of been easier, Asus you rule.

Danke Croc kinda funny cause I could of swore on my friends older Asus there was actually a setting saying 1:1 5:4 3:2.
Yes but that was likely an Award bios and, truly, that has bee what I was used to too. My last board I also had 4:5 and 4:6 settings so I could run the ram "faster" than the fsb. Iam not sure if I like the AMI bios better or why Asus decided to change.
Maybe that's part of the probs some jhave on the P4P and P4C800's?

I'm sure my error is quite simple, Im rock solid stable at 5:4 @ 225 fsb,or 1:1 @ 210fsb. If I put it up to 226 windows will run but will crash in 2 min with SETI running. I have "Turbo" and such on auto setting.AGP/PCI is set to 66/33.

Yeah I believe it is the award bios and not the AMI I have.
Hey I am at that board also, hahahah small world huh.
Hawk
Very nice review! +10 4 U and good follow up.
I is quite new to all this dispite the kit I have, so I am no guru. I would like an opinion on this one if poss?
I can not clock my FSB over 283MHz, I have tried many configs and have failed! Please let me know wot bios settings you used for your benches, I think I am missing the plot somewhere along the line!
This is how it is... 3.338MHz. Mem div is 5.4 @ 2.8V = 451.8MHz 2.5-3-3-8-4. Can go any higher at all on those, even the 8 to a 7, windows crash on startup! Have I missed the magic bios setting maybe. Wot u think? Seams like I have a similar problem as eva2000.
Neil,
Ok, first, why are you running 2.5-3-3-8-4?????
May OCZ3700's run up to DDR500 w/ 2-3-3-6-8 The last number should be 8, not 4. 8 in that case is faster.
Ok, 283FSB is not too shabby on a 2.4C. First, do you have the Vcore set to AUTO?
What settings do you have on in the BIOS?
Hawk
2.5-3-3-8-4 is the only setting that will give stability, I will try wot u have suggested. The V core is at 1.6! again the only way to achieve stability, wot do recommend here?
Which bios settings would you like and I will post them for you. And thanks!

Neil, do me a favor and put the VCore to AUTO. Then see what happens. I have not had to manually touch the Vcore on any "C" chip that I have as of yet.

Funny u say that, I have just tried the mem timmings u said @282FSB and every voltage in the range from 1.5 to 1.7 including auto and it will not load windows. Boots fine gets to the blue welcome screen and hangs! I dont know wot gives with this thing!!!

What is the memory voltage set to?
PCI/AGP is locked at 33.33/66.66 I assume. . . .
Maybe that is the cap on yur chip. . . Have you tested the memory using Memtest86 to make sure it is stable at those speeds?
You can also drop the memory divider again to 3:2 and see if you can OC higher. . . .

Yeh the agp/pci is at 33/66. I hear wot u saying but am almost convinced these particular memory sticks I have r 5h1t. I say that because the fsb will go to 285 with the divider at 3:2. I havent tried to go higher than that cause as you said ''283 is a good oc'' for this chip. A M8 is getting some new Corsiar stuff which I will highjack for a bit and see wot that tells me. I have not tried Memtest86, I have downloaded it and will give it a go.
Which other bios setting did u wanna see?

We'll that is not bad for the OC at all. Some lucky people have gotten to 300FSB, but not me. . . The main settings are:
VCore AUTO
DDR V 2.85V
AGP/PCI 33.33/66.66
Mem setting are manually configured and not by spd.
The reason I asked about memtest is maybe the memory timings are no good at that speed. What RAM chips are these also, because DDR3500's should cap out around DDR450, which is 280FSB. . . .

Doh, I knew that, I confused you with a Corsair question.
Run memtest86 and see if there are any errors with the following setup:
280FSB, Vcore AUTO
DDRspeed 320
AGP/PCI 33.33/66.66
DDRvoltage 2.85V
DDR timings, 2-3-3-6-8
Pat ENABLED and TURBO is on
Let me know if they are clean at that speed.

Question for you Hawk do I really need to make the jump to XP with the HT chip?
I am running 2kPro and was wondering if I am losing performance with this OS and the HT chip. HT is shown as enabled in the bios I just want to make sure.
Also what is the difference with the OEM XP deals for like 130 and the others for 190?

HT only adds a slight performace edge. Some apss do show a hit w/ HT also. 2K to XP is a good idea, just because XP is alot more stable then 2000. The OEM XP is for purchase w. new hardware.

I mostly play games and right now they dont use HT so no big deal there.
Is there any difference between the OEM ones feature wise?
What do you mean by the last sentence w.? You saying thats the price if you buy hardware cause I dont see where it says that.

Done the memtest as you said, 280FSB failed in first 4seconds, the fastest fsb that will pass is 271.3 = 3256GHz @DDR434 Is my theory about these sticks correct?

PAT is built in to the turbo mode feature when you set it to Turbo you can enable PAT in there.
I just got a call from my supplier.
I can RMA my underperforming P4P800 board to the distributor which is Supercom. That takes about 2 weeks while they Test. If the board runs OK stock they do not accept the RMA.?????
My supplier says he will use the existing board stock and get me another NC to avoid that. But, If I get the P4C800 E Deluxe it's $100Can or $60US more and if that underperforms he can't take it back on the same basis because he just can't use those boards.
So if the C board has 1:1 memory problems too, I am screwed.
So Hawk. Pay the extra and go for it or just swap for another P4P800 and give it another go?

The best I have got out of it... 282FSB, 3.2 div, 33.66 = 450MHz @ 2.5-3-3-8. Sandra bench scored 5906
I would like you to try 2-3-3-7-8 refresh at 15 and idle timer infinite.233fsb 1:1 2.65Vdimm.If its flakey try 2.75Vdimm.
If this proves stable them push for 242fsb same timings 2.85Vdimm.
I already know your memory works async..i just want to see if it clocks ok 1:1.

With the above settings at 2.65 and 2.75 it will not load windows, boots fine but hangs at the blue welcome screen. If I lower to 2.5-3-3-7-8 it will load.

Yeh it fails test 4
Slighly off subject but worth a read, very interesting article! http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030812/ddr500-01.html
15 on the refresh is pretty agressive and has gained me 100MB/s in memtest.I wanted to see if if the ram would run for Neil at standard timings and speed but as agressive as we could get it.
It looks like he has a few problems though.I must admit test 4 usually means a CPU problem but in this case i do feel the ram may be at fault.
Neil
Test the modules indevidually for me.Please use all slots and see what works best with each module.
Come back with your results and i will see if help is needed.

Damn that lot took a while : ) Where do I start? Ok i took both chips out and marked them randomly #1 and #2. Put 1 back in and set the bios up as follows... I figured start high and work down from there.
FSB 250, div 1:1, pci/agp 33:66, cpu 1.6v, ddr 2.8v. The memory... 2-3-3-6-8 with refresh 15 and idle timer infinate.
@250Mhz Chip 1 failed on test 5. Chip 2 failed test 3, same for all slots ie. A1, A2, B1, B2. I lowered only the FSB until I got a pass with both chips.
@248 Chip 1 passed in all slots
@242 Chip 2 passed in all slots
During this testing #2 failed a few times on test 3 but #1 never failed below 5. Wot does this tell you?
I have not run any tests at 3:2, should I?

How do the modules act when they are together with what you now know is the limit?
Will they do 2-3-3-7 at 233fsb 2.7V? 1:1?

Yeh they will do 242fsb 2.7V 1:1 = 484MHz I know they are rated at 466MHz but it's a bit lame, I have seen reviews at over 500 from the same stuff. So I am restricted to 3.0GHz with this memory. Not good, I know this chip will 3.5 which is bleak cause that would be a damn fine oc!
Why are these modules so different when they are supposed to be a matched pair, do OCZ actually check them?
The 2nd P4C800-E-Deluxe is now installed. #1 was DOA.
So far the OCZ3700Gold is doing not bad but not great.
I can hit 233fsb 1:1 2,3,3,7 at 2.75 but with Turbo on it's not stable with Auto vcore and my 2.6C. No way can I do 250fsb and 244fsb is not really stable either. I can do 262 at 5:4 2,3,3,7 Turbo and MaM enabled.
I have not tried black slots yet and I am still on 1008 bios that shipped with the board.
I also noticed no Intel driver for the lan on the Asus install cd.
What driver do you recommend? The one on the Asus website or????

Croc on the CD under drivers the last selection should read >Intel PRO/1000 LAN Driver<, if not perhaps you got shipped the wrong Install CD with the mobo.
MY CD label says P4C800/P4P800 Series. HTH
Yup that's what mine says but there is no Intel Pro/1000 lan driver on it. The CD revision# is 52.07.
It does not bother me that it is not there if I can download it drom Asus or Intel.
I just don't want any bloated software if I can just install a clean driver.
Hmmm, mine is 52.06.

OK I found an Intel Folder by browsing the CD.
Not sure whether I should use the the autorun file there or go to the IntelPro1000 folder. No autorun there but I guess I could try enabling the onboard lan, take whatever XP gives me and then update by navigating to the XP32 folder?
The manual does show that there should be an Intel Pro/1000 driver when you autorun the Asus Support CD. Thanks Asus.
Strange.
I have the 52.06 version CD from the DOA board and when the CD autoruns I see no Intel Pro1000 under the drivers tab section either.

Warning: P4C800-E Beta 11.05
Yesterday night I flashed my P4C800-E with the new Beta 11.05. With the pervious 11.02 I could run the P4C800-E stable at 13x260 Mhz with FSB and RAM both at 260 Mhz. The new BIOS immediately corrupted several XP files, and I had to re-install it. This BIOS is a dud.
No problems for 2 days with it as of yet.
Guys
Please keep us posted on this bios issue, thanks. Hawk changing the subject somewhat, what did you think about the results of all that memory testing I did. I never did get any feed back from Tony.

Antec Trueblue 480W. You think it's a power issue?
I have had problems trying to get the OCZGold past 233FSB stable too. I have the P4C800E and a 2.6C and my PSU is an Enermax 465. I have actively cooled both the northbridge and fan cooled the memory. Temps are very good.
Overclocking up to 260FSB 5:4 is oK but I struggled to boot at 250fsb 1:1. My voltages on all rails looks OK but I am wondering about it yes.
I guess it's possible my 2.6C is a weak overclocker but 258 Stable at 5:4 is not too shabby.

Yeh Croc I agree with you when you say heat is issue, my mem chips get hot, aswell there r fan cooled now but no difference to their performance!, I have water on CPU, Northbridge, GPU and fan on Southbridge and memory. I even for a time run two PSU's! The Antec 480W on the board only and another Antec 400W doing the rest and still no change to the numbers.
I will make four water blocks for this OCZ memory, depending on what they say about it's bad OC.
I would work with OCZ on the memory issues. They have the best service I have ever run across.
I think that some of the memory issues out there are board related as I have some friends who have had similar issues with Corsair on Abit IC7 boards.

I hear you when u say it may be board related, but check out the mem test results i posted earlier on in this thread, Tony told me to check various things with various settings which I did. One chip consistantly produced worse results that the other in all the different slots and configurations, that tells me memory issue more than board problem. Anyway lets see what OCZ does for me!

Pop me an email, the addy is in my sig..lets see what we can sort out for you.
Neil.
I upped the fan cooling to the memory. They get very hot. In fact after running a couple of test runs of 3DMark, they were much hotter than the Northbridge sink to the touch and hotter than the ram chips on the ATIRadeon9800Pro.

from the P4C800-E pics the NB heatsink is attached using 4 hooks right ? just checking to make sure i can do the same fan addition i did with my 4PCA3+ http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=834 :)
My P4C800-E should arrive tomorrow along with a 2.8C that can supposedly do 3.7ghz at 1.6v :)
Yeh it does, wot you wanna do about securing the fan to heatsink is.... Take 4 long (30 - 40mm) 3mm dia bolts, cut the heads off and bend carefully into a hook shape on the end you cut. Put the hooks throught the eyes on the board and you can iether use normal nuts or small thumb screws at the top. Fail safe easy mod 4 u.

Na unfortunately not and my camera is at a m8's place. Tell you wot I will go get tonight and post some for you. : )
I tried a bigger fan just like that but could not get it to fit well with the Zalman 7000ALCU. I settled on the BlueOrb fan instead. I think the bigger fan hub blocked out too much of the air flow to the sink. The Blue Orb fan is sized perfectly to the sink and puts out lots of cfm.
Sorry to hear about the board Neil.

The performance of the ICH5-R is better then the Promise. And ues, the Promise works for SATA as well as the Intel.
If you are using SATA devices, the best performance option for you will be running the SATA drives on the ICH5-R

Hawk, if you where building a new computer today useing the Asus P4C800-e Deluxe board, what P4 and Ram would you get if $$$ was not an issue? I really want the P4 3.2Ghz but I read you said they don't overclock well. Everyone likes the OCZ stuff but, what would you get if you were building one today.
I'm not a gamer but I use my computer for music production and I use alot of effects that eat up alot of cpu power.
Since my PC is used in the sudio it has to be Rock stable.

I would say either the 2.6C or 2.8C. They both OC very well. . Also, on the ram, either the OCZ3700 Golds or OCZ 4000's right now. . . .
My 3.2C OC's on air to 238FSB. That is not too shabby. . .

Or, you could save $40 and go with a 2.4C for around $180. They seem to OC very well...
Go for a Malay 2.4C, they r the best overclockers. If u can find a L3 batch, thats the one!

There is way to many choices and i really could use some help narrowing down on what type of ram i should get.
I am getting a P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard and a 3.0 w/ 800fsb . I want to have at least pc3700 that will overclock well. Im looking for a dual chan ram kit with 2x 512mb DDR
I willing to spend around $300 maybe a little bit more.
im planning on overclocking the pc3700 to pc4000 and running my front side bus at 1000 mhz
what you think will get me about 250 FSB with a 1:1 ratio?
If you have a site in mind that is selling the ram feel free to tell me.
Thanks for your time!!!

I think your desired specs are achievable with no problem, but I'd be very surprised if you can do it for $300 or less.

I was really wondering what do you think i should get Corsair 3700 plantnium or ocz 3700 Premier? i cant decide and they about the same price too.
Can any one really tell me if they have used either of these?
I want to oder my stuff for my computer but im been delaying because of the choice of ram it seems like one of the hardest choices i had make so far.
Thanks !!!
OCZ 3700 gold, the way forward : ) If you get a good pair it will oc to over 500MHz @ 5:4. At 1:1 u will around 470 - 485 @ CAS 2, thats good.

Now just need to work out the BIOS and o/c settings
Anyone with any pointers on what settings I should use?
thanks for any help :)

I'd go for the OCZ 3700 Gold, too, if you can live with 4x256 instead of 2x512. The lack of 512 pairs of has kept me from getting some Gold. Well, that and the fact that I spent a lot of cash in May for this Corsair.
Although Corsair stuff is rated highly, I can't say that I'm super impressed with my 3500. It runs higher than rated speed at 2-6-2-2, IF I pump so much juice through it that I can't keep the system cool (and I have good case airflow and a fan on the RAM). Had the OCZ been out, widely available and thoroughly reviewed when I bought my stuff, I'd have grabbed some.
Back to your question, I'm not sure about the Premiere. What're the rated timings? I know that the Corsair seems a bit loose and takes a lot of electrons to perform really well.

I am about to get this board for my NLE system.
I want the fastest, but most stable Intel cpu there is.
Also I am looking for 2 gig RAM - what's best for video editing purposes?
Any suggestions please?
Thanks Chris
Well, I'm tired of the 1.7 bios for my IC7 not standing up to even 265fsb 1:1 ratio. The ram runs great 1:1 at 275fsb but only in single channel configs for both sticks. Tried using dual channel, and it's just nothing but errors in memtest. Tried the 1.8 betas, and they didn't do anything either.
So, I've ordered an Asus P4C800-E, and will see what my OCZ 4000s can really do, and should get some results by the weekend.

i got a P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard running a 3.0 800fsb updated bios to latest version
I went with corsair TWINX1024-3700PT and for some reason everytime i boot up i get 3 beeps which is a memory read/write test error. It only sees my memory at 400 mhz on the post test and then it says 1024 ok.
I went in and manualy put the clock settings to what the defualt of the memory is instead of auto and it still had the beeps i went and changed the voltage to defualt is instead of auto and still beeps.
is there something wrong with the memory or is it that my motherboard can't handle or doesn't like the ram. i bought it from newegg.
thanks for all the help!!!
Are you sure the beeps are memory test error beep codes? Are you aware that the AMI bios gives you a post beep and then beeps for the number of usb devices detected. Try pulling any usb connections and then boot as a simple test.
wweman316
09-27-2003, 11:53 AM
oh i had no clue how do you make the memory on the post say what your ram is really at instead of just saying 400 mhz when i have 466mhz ram in.
wweman316
09-27-2003, 11:58 AM
i going to test with no devices.
be back in 20 mins
wweman316. . . Those beeps at POST are probably USB devices that are connected. 3 beeps = 3 devices.. . Check it out. . .

You may want to do just the opposite, i.e. put the os on your ide drive. The main advantage to having RAID 0 is faster read/write performance. So if you're transferring large files, you should be able to do it faster with sata drives configured as a RAID array.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should put those things on your RAID'ed drives that can best take advantage of the extra speed. Your video editing, for instance, should benefit from RAID. Also, I would recommend having at least 1GB of RAM because video editing can be a real memory hog.

Well, I have been trying to decide on a Canterwood MB, and finally decided on this one - until I read a recent review over at Crucible concerning voltage regulation. They reported VR as terrible on this board, varying by a .25 drop in Vcore when the cpu was under load. Hence they felt it would not be a good board for OCing. Any chance they just got a dud board? Also will this board support 2X agp(Nvidia) - havent saved enough yet for better video?
Thanks,
Chelsea
Hi,
i'm new in all this, and i've read about the Promise and ICH5 controllers (i want the HD in raid 0)... but and i've a doubt...
My system:
1x LG-LS120 (ide connection, not like old 3.5'' disk units)
2x Raptors 36GB SATA (in raid 0)
1x WD 120GB PATA
1x Pioneer DVD-Rom
1x Plex 48/24/48 CD-R/RW
How should i connect this?
I mean, i read about the ICH5 wich is better than the Promise (raid performance), but i read too that one channel in the ICH5 is disabled when you connect a SATA device to it... wich devices must go to the ICH5 and which to the Promise?
BTW, i use WinXP, the micro is a p4 2.4C and the mem. is GeIL DualDDR PC4000 Ultra Platinum...
Thanks in advance... and great article! ;)

I is a known flaw with all Asus boards so I'm not to sure why it has not been a problem. I guess Asus knows something we don't know.
2x AGP should not/cannot be used on any of the Canterwoods-it must be 4x or higher.

1st Thanks for the review Hawk! Your review was one of the main reasons I bought the P4C.
Now for a total newb question. :(
I listed most of my hardware in my sig, and I feel like I'm studying for the BAR exam trying to learn all I can about building my 1st PC! I read tech articles and have found some great info, but a lot of it is just confusing to me. I have yet to find an article with my exact set-up. (My drives)
I have all the BIOS and everything involving the MOBO either drilled in my head or on scribbled notes, but would someone please shed some light on configuring my HDD's?? In hindsight I wish I had just went with Raptors but I need the file space. I have decided to use the Raptor for OS and programs, the 120GB for storage etc.
I definitely want to take advantage of the RAID capability so I'll definitely add more HDD's pretty soon.
What I don't get is - the 360 & 1200 can't be configured RAID or master / slave because of the speed difference, and I can't buy another pair of the two to run RAID 0+1 which is what I really want in the end.
High speed for graphics and storage for video editing. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t discover the RAID issue until the drives were on the way….
I bought everything after countless reviews both good & bad - of course I want the best performance within reason. (reason = $$$) But everything was picked also for its quietness. I already have a "hair dryer" case setup and I've had enough of it. :beat:
Anyway - I read that RAID utility driver needs to be installed before the OS or if you decide to go with a RAID config later, you have to reformat. (??) Do I install the driver even if I’m not currently able to use it?
I hate to ask, I'm sure the answers are very simple to most on the board. I'm just getting started and I hate to fry something due to stupidity or have a system that won't perform due to a bad configuration. I'm definitely looking forward to putting it together though!
Thanks for any help. This is a great source of info.
Here's a little of the stuff that I found @ the door this morning. :D The rest should be here tomorrow..... I plan to take a lot of pictures and do kind of a build from a newb's point of view.

I am in the same boat as you. Hopefully we can help each other along
the way. I just got the OS installed tonight. I had the same question
as you:
"Anyway - I read that RAID utility driver needs to be installed before the OS or if you decide to go with a RAID config later, you have to reformat. (??) Do I install the driver even if I’m not currently able to use it?
I hate to ask, I'm sure the answers are very simple to most on the board. I'm just getting started and I hate to fry something due to stupidity or have a system that won't perform due to a bad configuration. I'm definitely looking forward to putting it together though!"
I didn't know a definitive answer so I did not worry about it. I am not
using RAID yet either....
The RAID driver needs to be installed to a floppy on a clean install. If you want to add additional RAID drives now, you can just install the drives and install the drivers.
Yes, if you do a clean install, you must re-format the drives for RAID. You cannot move non-raid drives into the raid w/o loosing the data.
If you are not using RAID right now, there is no reason to install the drives. Just disable the deviced in the BIOS.

Ok, spent the day installing stuff that you install after OS.
1. Intel Chipset INF program
2. Video Card drivers
3. Zone Alarm
4. NAV
5. Windows Updates
etc.
1 Question I have is I still have 2 things in the device manager that
have exclamation marks :
Other devices -> Raid Controller
Other devices -> USB controller
Anyone have any ideas? USB is enabled in bios. When I tried to
install USB driver from asus cd, it just told me to get Win XP SP1 cause
the driver is included. But, it still is exclamation after SP1 installed....

I bought two sticks of RAM separetly from different companies. They both are OCZ PC3700 256mb EL.
They will work singly but not with both on the board. If I install both sticks I get a VGA error or a CPU error that won't go away until I take out one stick and reseat which error I have.
Did i screw up?
What should I do? Im out of ideas.

ErikaeanLogic, I have heard from others that you don't require the drivers if you are only installing one drive, no RAID. However, I have never had any luck with that. You might want to attempt first without the drivers and see what happens. Just remember to not activate XP Pro for a few days. ;)

From what I understand, the driver you need for a single SATA drive is included in Windows XP with Service Pack 1a. I made a slipstreamed version of my Windows XP Pro with SP1a Slipstreamed in, that was all that was required for my Maxtor 160Gb SATA drive to be recognized.

One quick question, and this is really reaching for an answer, and not meant to insult your technical ability. Since I have never owned a Raptor, and on my Maxtor SATA drive, there is a jumper block, which is the same size as the SATA Data connector, does the same hold true for the Raptor? The reason I am asking is one friend of mine also bought a Maxtor 160Gb SATA drive, shortly after I finally got my Maxtor to be recognized, (there was a small solder short on two of the pins on the SATA Data connector PCB). He also had a problem with drive recognition, it turned out to be a very simple problem, he accidently hooked up the SATA Data cable to the Jumper block connector instead of connecting it to the SATA Data input connector. Maxtor should have used a different size jumper connector, which would not allow the SATA Data connector to fit into it. And man it was tough getting the cable out of the jumper connector without damaging his cable.

Yes, there is an 8-pin jumper area beside the SATA power and data cable connections but I have only used that for various jumper configuration attempts. Thanks for the tip, though;).

Since the subject is Asus P4C800E where does that fall in line with the P4c800PE that I just saw at the computer show?

 I need to know which mother board to choose........875P chipset....
ASUS P4C800E-Deluxe, or ABIT IC7-MAX 3, with a P4/2.4C/800mhz cpu???
What is the max overclock for this chip, and is the retail fan the best cooling for overclocking, or should I get a P4/3gig+ cpu instead...???
Also is the retail fans from Intel good enough........??? PLEASE HELP !!!!
Is Corsair Twinx DDR 3200 cas 2, or 2.5, or their new DDR 4000/4400 a
better choice........ Pro series, also read that OCZ memory is very good ............I'm taking a chance with XP Pro sp1 as my new OS,
I have Win 98se now on my ASUS P4T533 with Rimm 4200-512mb my 3D-
mark 2001se score is 12,567 not bad with only 512mb of ECC Samsung memory, and not overclocked..............WD/120 gig/8mb cache, Visiontek Ti4600/128mb, 56x cd, SBLive value, D-Link NIC/10/100...

Just had a nightmare. Dreamed I was about to start a long and expensive job for a client, with a short deadline. That I would upgrade my RexRT Pro system on the day before I start capturing 2 days of intensive filming.
Dreamt that I just got to the IT workshop to pick the system up and I was told that the new mobo ( Asus P4C800-E Deluxe "Canterwood" (Socket 478) Motherboard (MB-029-AS) 800 fsb) had blown as I got to the door (Friday afternoon at 5.30p.m.)!
Trouble is it wasn't a dream - it just happened.
The small chip alongside the AGP port just melted - brand new. It happened after my builder had put the Radeon 8500 in and instaled new drivers. Screen went black, smell of burning.
Anyone got views on Asus P4C800-E Deluxe "Canterwood" (Socket 478) Motherboard (MB-029-AS) 800 fsb ??
This is not a good omen, especially after all the hype I read about this mobo.
BTW the spec is:- Intel P4 - 3.2 CPU (although the melt down occurred whe a P4 3.0 CPU was installed) Kingston 3700 RAM, Win 2 K Pro, ATI Radeon 8500, Enermax PSU.
cheers Chris
