soooooo, is this where you've been hiding;)?

nice results on the WinXP, especially in the Divx area you're so fond of:). did you remember to register your paid-for copy?:D

hehe~

yea the DivX benchmark shows just how well XP performs when using large files under full load.

i never reg anything, but for the record yes i do actually own 98 & XP licenses :na:

further XP tweaking (services) is yielding even better performance, but ill leave that for another thread ;)

 welcome to BE.com jhites

XP is a very large animal compared to 98. (2gb vs 250mb)
its been taking me some time to get used to where all the d@mn control panels are, but im getting there.

how about an NTFS comparison:;)?

ThugsRook
05-21-2003, 06:40 PM
ugggg

my 1st install i used NTFS and i was not happy dealing with it AT ALL :smash:
reinstalled with FAT32 and its working nice and fast for me.

if i had a spare HD layin around id do a proper comparison ~ but i dont :(

its good to see you here Erik

hint: convert.exe;)

ThugsRook
05-21-2003, 06:53 PM
id rather just clone the drive onto another with NTFS ~ that way it would be as identicle as possible. (and w/o disturbing my current drive)

:)

ErikaeanLogic
05-21-2003, 07:21 PM
okay: Ghost the drive and then run convert.exe;)

looking forward to seeing the difference:)

ok ok, dont rush me ;)

1st chance i get ill run that comparison.
im very interested in the results myself but breaking the 2gb file size limit and performance are my only 2 interests :deviltail

i need more time on XP tho ~ after what is basically 8 years on 95/98 im not yet as comfortable on XP.

:)

Dot use Convert because if you do you'll end up with 512byte sectors. yuck.

the default ntfs is 4kb, If i would have to convert I would use partition magic instead.

Fat32 has a 4 gig limit so it's useless to me,most dvd images are over 4 gigs. ;)

Fat32 is useless for me too. 1 hr of DV capture is 13 Gig. NTFS has other advantages such as security, recovery, and faster file searching. More efficient as well with 4K clusters VS 32K on Fat32 on a larger partition. The only thing I would use Fat32 for is compatibility with a dual boot Windows/Linux setup using a shared data partition that both could see.

oldfart ~ you dont have to capture in a uncompressed format ;)

but yea, you guys have a point.
(id be able work around that.... somehow) ;)

That's ok. I'll forgive you for your short comings. :p :D ;)

And people, please don't claim NTFS is secure in the sense of protecting your data from others-it's not true. NTFS is more secure in protecting your data from problems like the power going out on ya and not losing as much data because NTFS is journalling what is going on all the time. And no more of the miserable POS scandisk. :) And NTFS can actually handle fragmented files much better.

just so you know, WinXP handles FAT32 much differently then Win98 does. the NTFS redundancany is what i couldnt stand about it.

isnt MS coming out with a new FS soon anyway?

That IS compressed. I do DV capture. DV is its own compression format. Uncompressed would be MUCH MUCH bigger than that. There are some hacks for some programs (not the one I use) to break it into 4 Gig chunks.

I do A LOT of work with my DV capture/editing/DVD authoring. I just did something for our church that was a 2.5 Hr video. The DV capture file alone was 33 Gig! 4 Gig is not even enough for the DVD file never mind the capture.

Thugs, nice results....;) I expect the same list of tweaks for XP as you had for 98, but you have time....I'll give ya a week, is that enough? Hehe...:p

It's good to see so many mates from AT.... :-)

LOL! :rotflmao:

actually the 2nd thread never materialized due to vid driver differences between the OSes (at the time).

Win98se still runs great for me, i have no complaints.
Doom3 may change that tho :bonk: :coocoo:  :help:
