Help me decide oh gosh...

I was set on IS7 (non-g) and was talked out of it...

I was thinking of getting the IC7 (non-g) and see that it has no onboard lan (argh)

and now i'm considering the p4p800 (non-deluxe)...

so i know all you guys have one of these boards...

which of these three can do 300 mhz fsb??? or close to 300

Hawk

They can all do that, it's the chip you have to focus on that needs to be able to run that way.

Either board you'll be happy with.

I have a 2.4C that can do 293FSB & a 3.0C that can do 247FSB. . .

Find someone with a 2.4C, 2.8C that can give you a spec code of a cpu that can hit 300. . . They are rare, but they are out there. . .

sorry about that post

i meant to say assuming that the cpu could get up that high...

so both the ic7 and the asus p4p800 can do 300 huh?

hmm...

You may need some extra NB cooling though.

shimmishim
07-09-2003, 03:18 PM
yeah, that won't be a problem...

i have a waterblock and i'll prolly add a nb waterblock to it :)

Chuck232
07-09-2003, 03:20 PM
Well there you go! :D

I'd personally go for the Canterwood (IC7 in this case) since you'll still have PAT when you use the 5:4 or 3:2 RAM ratio whereas the Springdale will lose the pseudo PAT at these ratios.

shimmishim

AHHHH....

i didn't know that!

thanks!

i guess it's the ic7 then with my old linksys 10/100 collecting dust under my bed!

:)

but i hear there's a ic7 max 3 coming out... in a few weeks...

argh, guess i'll just have to wait for these...

also hearsd about the ocz gold pc4000 coming out soon as well...

gosh... AHHH
so much i want but must have to wait..

Chuck232
07-09-2003, 03:33 PM
Max 3 really doesn't add much at all... I'd just go for the IC7.

As for the PC4000.. well that's your call.

max 3 allows for higher vdimm i hear and something else...

anyone else know?

Here is a link to the max3.Not sure about the higher vdimm.

worth waiting for?

No idea if its worth waiting for.

Chuck232
07-09-2003, 05:14 PM
Doesn't really add much...:rolleyes:

Only really corrects the few faults of the IC7-G... like the crappy NB fan.

hmm..... OKAY!

hmm.... what about ram now...

ocz is releasing pc4000 and pc4200 soon...

I would be more worried right now finding a good CPU that overclocks.The rest is easy once you have a good chip.Maybe someone is selling one in a forum already pretested.

shimmishim
07-09-2003, 06:25 PM
naw, i just risk it :)

outpost.com?
newegg.com?
googlegear.com?

who should i try?

i'm gonna get a 2.4C

Maybe try looking at a smaller store actually where you can pick the FPO/batch number... I hear the L309/L310 are pretty good. I think most of the Malays are doing well, and the Philipenes are not. Costa Rica is somewhere in between.

smaller stores as in???

Chuck232
07-11-2003, 04:06 AM
That depends on what smaller stores are near you lol.:p

I don't think it really matters as long as the box is properly wrapped still you shouldn't have a problem with old CPUs.

not many things here... so sad... :(

You are talking OEM chips and not retail boxes right?

Anybody have an idea on 2.6C's. My supplier deals in retail boxes only. I can scan FPO#'s Version# and packdates.
I only see 2 S-specs listed SL6QR and SL6WH. The last is the most recent and it looks like all the SL6WH ones are doing well.

There are no SLQR's listed at all. Hmmmm?

Chuck232
07-13-2003, 05:36 AM
Look and see if they have any Malay week 9 or week 10 chips. They were the earlier chips, but seemed to o/c the best.

Croc
07-13-2003, 07:31 AM
Retail boxed cpu's won't tell you where they were packed. Just the pack date. Unfortunately the guy I use does have the option to open boxes and sort through chips.

Chuck232
07-13-2003, 04:38 PM
Ummm.. yes they do... Read the FPO/Batch and it'll give you a bunch of numbers/letters. The first number/letter is the place it's assmebled or whatever.

Croc
07-13-2003, 09:18 PM
OK, so as an example my 2.66 has an FPO# of Q316A036.

What's the secret code on that? :)

Croc
07-13-2003, 09:30 PM
Alright according to Intel that's SiteQ year is 3 ( 2003 ) week 16 and the lot code is A036.

So what are the letter codes for sites. I assume that's Malay, Phillipines, CostaRica, etc.

Chuck232
07-14-2003, 04:10 AM
OK, I'll find that for you..:D

That's a Malay chip. Ok, this is from Overclockers.com

1st letter or digit=plant code
0=San Jose,Costa Rica
3=..............,Costa Rica
1=Cavite,Philippines
R=Manila,Philippines
7=..........,Philippines
9=Penang,Malaysia
Q=...........,Malaysia
L=............,Malaysia
8=Leixlip,Ireland
Y=Leixlip,Ireland
6=Chandler,Arizona

Have fun! :D

The L309/310s are doing good as are the Q320s.

Croc
07-14-2003, 07:09 AM
You dah man Chuck. I did not see that over at Overclockers.com.
So I gather people seem to prefer Malay and Cost Rica over Philippines or "Leixlip"? Oh crap a limmerick is now playing in my head.:) Little green guys with pointy shoes on an assembly line......

I guess I don't completely understand why the site makes a big difference or even if I will be able to get the choice.

shimmishim
07-14-2003, 07:11 AM
are there any online retailers that let you pick the stepping for intel processor?

hmmm... i wonder if pcsupplysource.com does... i know they let you for the amd processors...

Chuck232
07-14-2003, 08:43 AM
Usually on-line retailers don't let you pick. Sometimes they sell chips with a specific stepping though, usually at a premium.

shimmishim
07-14-2003, 08:48 AM
i knwo but these guys let you pick amd steppings...

you just have to put a note in it in the last few steps of the ordering process and you get what you asked for.. :)

My supplier does go the extra mile. He is off to Supercom right now with my Product code and FPO# preferences so we are giving it our best shot.

I am fortunate though because he agrees to swap a processor for another within 30 days at almost no cost as long as he can use the current one in a box he is building to run at stock. We have done that before. His prices may be a tad higher but I can drive a few minutes to his place for RMA's and pick-ups. What could be better?

So I am going with the P4P800. Never had a bad pick with them so far so time to deal in.

Right now I am trying to scoop a Saphire Atlantis 9700 vid card for $255Can. Have not checked their version number for campatibility yet but that's a very hot price.

Thanks for the info. Chuck232. :wave:

Chuck232
07-14-2003, 10:02 AM
Wow, you sure are lucky... Supercom seems to be where a lot of comp shop get their stuff...:D

Hehe... $255 for a R9700, nice price. ;)

And no problem Croc!

Croc
07-14-2003, 10:15 AM
I think we are lucky in this area. Vancouver area is a well developed tech area and I have noticed that with shipping and exhange, prices can't be beat because there is lots of competition.

Anyway. the board is on it's way here. Time to backup, copy all the drivers and game config. files, etc, etc,.

Rock on!

shimmishim
07-14-2003, 10:20 AM
yup, i've taken the first step as well....

order a converter for my waterblock to convert it from a athlon wb to a p4 wb :)

now it's time to order my board (IC7) and my p4 2.4C :)

shimmishim
07-14-2003, 11:48 AM
done!

2nd day ups

hopefully everything will be here by wed/thurs :)

i'll use my pc3200 for now... and the 3:2 divider to see how high i can get this thing...

then i'll move over to the 5:4 divider when i get better ram (assuming i can get it THAT high of course)

which bios should i use?

Chuck232
07-14-2003, 12:08 PM
Hmm.. i think the 1.5 is still beta. Try the 1.4 and if it works, then don't worry about it.

shimmishim

Croc
07-14-2003, 02:53 PM
Yup, If I remember right Pastor Jay dropped back to 14 on his IC7.

Supercom and my supplier came through. I could not get a specific week but did get to pick an SL6WH in a CostaRica from their stock instead of a the Philippines versions so hopefully that will help. I was surprised they would go for surfing through their bins.

Hell you pays your money and you take your chances. After checking my investment portfilio I will loose no sleep over the comp stuff.

Picked up Vantec Nexus fan controller too. After building my own 4 switch fan busses it works sweet for $28 Can. Even looks good with my Lian-li.:yummy:

Chuck232
07-14-2003, 02:59 PM
Hehe... Good Luck! :D

BTW, so are you saying that most P4 Cs in Canada are the Phillipines? Cause I just ordered one and that would suck.... :/

Croc
07-14-2003, 03:40 PM
Nope. It's just that Supercomm had 2.6C's in the SL6WH series from both the Philippines and CostaRica so I chose the CostA Rica.

It looked like all the good overclocks on Overclockers.com were SL6WH so I am hoping for good results.

By the way that Nexus controller is great. I have 2 80's a 92 and a 120 indusrtrial monster running on my bench here. I expected some buzzing on the 7 low end but it's terrific.

We were just laughing too. A bud who has been building for years could not understan how I was ablt o run the old PSU I have without having it plugged into a mobo. These OEM guys.

Ouch, just took a shot in the arm.

so excited about my new board and processor!!!

lots o fun!!!

it'll be neat to see 3.0 ghz rather than the usual 2.5 ghz :)

and to see some crazy sandra scores as well

Good stepping 2.4C is L309 (2003 week 9) or L310 (2003 week 10).There are a few more.I have the L310.These are Malaysia's.

The 14 bios is suppose to be better if you run OCZ Gold 3700 ram.Otherwise I would use the 15 bios.You can try 14 first and then try 15 and determine what is best for you.

Chuck232

Yes, the Q320, but I have not seen many people with them.

The ones you mainly hear about are the L309/310.

MAN!

googlegear sucks.... i ordered on Monday...

It is now Wednesday and it says they are still processing my order...

if it doesn't go out today, i'm not getting this junk until next monday!!!

they suck hardcore... if it's not ready by today, i'm cancelling my order and going over to newegg even though they are a little more expensive...
